A list of puns related to "Alethiometer"
I've been tempted to get an Alethiometer tattoo for some time now and thought it would be good to have it show the hands pointing to symbols akin to one of the readings from the novels.
Short of scanning through the books myself or noting them down on a re-read (which I'm not against, just curious if anyone has any to hand) does anyone by any chance have any examples of the readings and the questions being asked?
This might be painfully obvious to everyone else! I read too fast and miss things, and have a not great memory.
>!In the Golden Compass (book), Iorek demonstrates to Lyra that the bears can't be tricked by having her attack him with a branch. She can't land a hit, he seems to know what she's going to do before she moves. Iorek says it's the same way she can read the alethiometer. Bears can see in a way that humans have forgotten, like how adults can't read the alethiometer without a book of meanings. Lyra wonders if she'll lose her ability when she grows up.!<
>!And she does! Now, the several times I've read the series, all I've taken from that scene is that bears can't be tricked. Then at the end, when she can't read the alethiometer anymore, after I finished sobbing (everytime), I just thought that it was a special power she had lost since she was done being Eve.!<
>!Totally didn't make the connection with what Iorek said! Maybe kids in general can read alethiometers naturally, if they're able to go into that meditative state. Who would let a kid mess around with something so incredibly rare and important? So no one knew.!<
Again, apologies if this is super obvious. (For my next major revelation, I will point out that Lyra is both a liar and a truthteller.) I also haven't read the other books yet, not sure if it comes up elsewhere.
Why does the new method have a physical cost in TSC? It must mean something, everything else in that book does. I thought it might be something along the lines of the reader asking the device something specific instead of understanding what the device has to say but I don't think that's quite it. Any thoughts appreciated!
Just got two brand new tattoos and wanted to show them off to people who might appreciate them!! Thanks a lot to Mylene Obscurae, the tattoo artist.

if he tried to use it, like if Lyra's was restrained in some way would he be able to use it the same way Lyra can?
Does anybody know of a place I could get a desk clock that was made in the style of an Alethiometer? I've found wall clocks on cafe press and redbubble but I was hoping for something more golden compasses. It's a gift some someone that loves the series, I'm willing to spend up to $150.

As per the title, are there any official replicas of the 2019 show versions of the alethiometer and Subtle Knife, either already released or planned to be released in the future?
Hi y'all -
Like you, I'm a longtime fan of the His Dark Materials books and am super pumped about the premiere of the television series from BBC/HBO. So pumped, in fact, that some friends and I spent far too much time over the summer and fall building something that is either stupid or wonderful (or possibly both) as an homage to >!Lyra's multiverse!<.
The Emoji Compass is an alethiometer for the smartphone generation, combining the interpretive flexibility of emoji with the uncanny intelligence of a mobile device, powered principally by >!Dust!< (and React). >!You move the hands around the dial to ask a question, relying on layered meanings suggested by the app or held in your head. Then, the compass will respond with its own series of selections to generate an answer. Its symbology is adapted directly from the layers of meaning behind each of the alethiometer's own symbols.!<
The app is available for free in the [App Store] (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/the-emoji-compass/id1440200804) and on the web; Android coming soon (we hope). We're not trying to to make money, just to make people think (π€), and we want to give HDM fans like ourselves something with which to connect to the series (and each other).
We hope you like it!
P.S. This is an open source project, so if you're interested in helping develop it, package it for Android, etc., just head over to Github: https://github.com/BadIdeaFactory/the-emoji-compass/projects/1#column-1902974
I know I can up lists of all 36 symbols, but as I was reading myself, I tried to track all the symbols mentioned in the reading (I have only read the HDM trilogy, non of the companion books). In reading, I only counted 24 of the symbols noted.
I recognize I may have missed some, but am I accurate in thinking not all were mentioned in the original books? Were the remainder revealed in subsequent writings or do I just have poor attention to detail?
I've recently been into Tarot Cards and other kinds of fortune-telling, having nothing better to do during Corona, and I noticed how the Tarot cards are similar to the alethiometer. If you are given an alethiometer and you don't know the meanings you can discover them by using associations. With Tarot cards you can look at the images and think about what comes to mind, and when you're reading a spread you have to look at connections between the cards and how they influence each other. I feel like this is the closest thing to the alethiometer we can have in our world.
Hi everybody.
I was wandering if is there any repository of examples of Alethiometer readings/translations.
I run a fantasy setting tabletop game with some friends and I would love to train a Deep Learning model to at least produce something similar to the oracular capacities of the Alethiometer.
I would obviously publicly divulge the model if it was anything close to entertaining.
Thanks in advance
