Sebi is about to implement their new rules, most of the rules are fine but there is a rule that made trading community furious. Sebi is going to remove margin money or leverage feature for intraday trading.
So what is margin money?
Consider it as extra money for a trade provided by the broker. For example - If you have ₹10,000 and broker provides 5X margin then you can buy ₹50,000 worth of shares. For a new comer it works as a disaster and for professional traders it works as an important edge.
Earlier it used to be 10X then Sebi cut it down to 5X now they are completely removing it.
Why are traders opposing it?
This rule basically take power from retail traders and give it to operators. Trader who used to buy 50 shares, can only buy 10 shares after this rule. Volume will be substantially reduced hence liquidity will be less, buy and sale bids will be also reduced.
After decades Indian Stock Market volume grew by 92% in Jan 2021 as compared to Jan 2020. Volume is a very positive thing for a market. All the legend investors such as Rakesh J, Vijay Kedia made their early money because of leverage or margin money.
Broker’s business are going to take a hit because of this. All the brokers will be same only service will be different.
Motive of Sebi is to save retail traders from losses but these rules will push trades to trade in Future & Options which is volatile as hell. So their purpose is already defeated because share move around 2-3% in a day whereas Future & Options moves 100% or more.
