This post contains a bit of a math but if you get the grasp of it, you 'll be able to create your own herbal formulas in no time!

Again, this is my true story:

When I started experimenting with herbs I felt especially attracted to nettles. This amazing plant (Urtica Urens) is dominant to where I live, reaching up to 1 m. in mid winter. Nettle is one of the most nutritious herbs of planet earth; it can be of a benefit in cases of anemia, painful muscles and joints, eczema, arthritis. An ethanolic extract has also been applied topically with success, for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

So I thought that it would be great if I had some of this herb, always on hand. Tincture is always my product of choice in cases like this. Due to its ethanolic content, a tincture can keep up to shelf for up to 5 years.

So one day I picked carefully two bags full of nettle tops; I let them dry thoroughly and weight them; they were about 120 gr. Before I start any herbal product I always consult my materia medica which suggested for this particular extract, a 1: 5 w/v ratio between my dried herb and alcohol.

What a 1:5 ratio actually means is, that for the 120 gr herb that I had on hand I needed 600ml alcohol by volume. So, I measured my alcohol and started the maceration process.

Imagine my surprise, when I noticed that nettle where absorbing every drop of alcohol! In maceration, it is crucial that the herb is covered by your solvent. The air that’s trapped between your solvent and the top of jar will contaminate your product, causing it to develop mold on top. Alcohol as a medium, not only serves as an extractive agent but as a barrier between your plant and the air.

I kept pouring alcohol. I added 18 parts in total (a 1:18 ratio!) just to find later that the 1:5 ratio of my materia medica corresponds to percolation extracts, where is also calculated the volumetric value of every plant. I also made the terrible mistake of not having powdered my herb carefully, as I owed to from the beginning.

Dry nettle is one of the most absorbent herbs, along with mullein and artichoke leaves.

This is what I learned so far from homeopathy, that a fistula can be healed. But you need to know the following facts:

• the fistula represents a precancerous state
• the fistula is a valve and should not be removed (at least not without accompanying it with a homeopathic therapy, because it will reappear and when the body has no energy it will produce cancer)
• almost always an inner organ is involved and under great stress (liver, lungs, spleen)
• cure the involved organ with a "organotropic" remedy and you cure the fistula
• sometimes the fistula is the result of a trauma (Arnica), falling on the coccyx (Hypericum)
• in rare cases it is the result of drug abuse (Nux-vomica)
• when the involved organ is cured, but the fistula just will not close, then search for symptoms that may point towards Silicea

Involved Organs and their remedies (see Burnett for more information, he was the real genius regarding fistula, or John Henry Clarke, a real fan of Burnett) ... the list is not complete, but you will get the idea.

The dose should be repeated more often than during a normal chronic case, because the precancerous state "consumes the energy of the remedy very fast", but not as often as in a real cancer case.

And low potencies can be used for the organotropic remedies (Chelidonium, Urtica urens), if possible a spagyric preparation instead of a low potency. Here you can see the similarity with cancer treatment. The involved organ requires special attention.

I've used this product for like a year now and just recently looked at the ingredients to try and dupe it. I feel like there's no reason this should cost $25 for 8oz. I love using this as a pre-poo because I love the minty-tingly feeling. It's a very conditioning product imo but the surfactants help rinse it out easy. In my dupe I wanted to make this a little more conditioning with BTMS-50 instead of their weird cetearyl alcohol and SLS emulsifier. Instead of SLS, I opted for SCI and CMPB to make this product lather and rinse out easier. I also added some centramonium chloride which the original product used to contain (it no longer does) to add to the conditioning feeling. The bulk of my version is cetyl alcohol because the OG product is very slippy and when I rinse it out it can easily detangle the length of my hair.

The original ingredients: Fresh Mint Infusion (Mentha Piperita) (Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract) , Water (Aqua) , Cetearyl Alcohol and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate , Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate , Citric Acid , Propylene Glycol , Honey , Peppermint Oil (Mentha piperita) , Sweet Orange Oil (Citrus sinensis) , Spearmint Oil (Mentha spicata) , Grapefruit Oil (Citrus paradisi) , Nettle Absolute (Urtica urens) , Neroli Oil (Citrus Aurantium amara) , Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Olea europaea) , *Limonene , *Linalool , *Citral , Fragrance , Methylparaben , Propylparaben .

My version:

Heated phase A, B, and C in a water bath until everything was heated thoroughly then added the water phase to the oil phase, blended for about 30 seconds and added in my surfactant phase. It'll be quite runny until it cools. Add your Cooldown phase and it's pretty much ready to use.

I apply this to my scalp 15 minutes before washing. When I get into the shower to rinse it, my scalp feels very moisturized. It still lathers a tiny bit upon rinsing it out, but I feel like my version is a bit more slippy than the original which I love. I would appreciate any thoughts and feedback!
