A list of puns related to "Unión General de Trabajadores"
Ten years ago, a guy called Nahuel Levaggi decided to try and organize those workers that feed most of the people in Argentina. He came from a family with leftist leanings, and had his political initiation in the Frente Popular Dario Santillan, an urban Organización Piquetera, but changed the course of his political action when he saw the desperate situation of those truly fundamental workers, those that provide produce to most of the Argentinian population.
The situation was, and remains, dire. While those that produce the food receive very little money for the product of their work, the final consumer pays a lot. The producers don't have any land, and a big percentage of what they earn ends up paying their rent, which lifts the prices of food for everyone else to help a handful of landowners get rich.
The UTT has set out to solve this issues, and it is doing it from the base up. Right now, it nucleates 15.000 families or rural workers, and fights to get credits from the government to help them buy the land they work, as well as is creating a series of direct connections between the workers and the consumers that betters the situation of both. The consumer pays a lot less for the food, and the producer earns a lot more. The organization is also starting to create a series of colonies of workers near some cities, to attempt to feed the cities with local production of healthier and cheaper food.
And the most important thing: it is giving very, very cheap and diverse food to the Comedores Populares, our food banks that are usually run by different leftists organizations. This has the potential to change what a lot of poor people eat, making their lives healthier and better. But it also creates a different form of production, one based around feeding our communities instead of making a profit, one that may help convince a lot of people that there are better ways to live and work.
Lenin said: “the revolution is not done, it is organized”. This is not the revolution. This is a revolutionary organization, one that helps people solve their real, material problems. This is a model of revolutionary work, even if the UTT does not consider itself a socialist organization.
(I am leaving out a lot of stuff, such as their fight for a more ecologically friendly production or against the agrarian multinationals and the capitalist agrarian market, I might make a post about that later)
