United States invasion of Grenada in 1983. Was this conflict inevitable? What were the international repercussions after the conflict?

I have a major in int. relations and I'm passionate about history however I never ever heard or read about this conflict! I'm from Europe so maybe that's why it is not taught but nevertheless, i would like to know if you have good sources - books or articles - about this conflict.

Any interesting facts?

What is your opinion on the US Invasion of Grenada?

It was condemned by the U.N with a vote of 108 to 9 calling it a "flagrant violation of international law." However, the invasion was widely supported by the citizens of the country and many neighboring nations supported it. It is even celebrated as a national holiday in Grenada, and the nation has remained a stable democracy since.

I strongly support what we did. We freed a country that was under an oppressive government, and we didn't end up destabilizing them.

CMV: The invasion of Socialist Grenada by the USA in 1983 was... just awful

So, I've gotten most of my information from William Blum's book Killing Hope, there's an 8-page chapter covering most of this and it makes the following claims:

  • The pre-socialist government of Grenada had a secret police (Wikipedia supports this also) which actually destabilised the country by radicalising much of the population. The government also engaged in electoral fraud.
  • Grenada reduced illiteracy and unemployment under the socialist government.
  • The US government engaged in attempted economic warfare, spreading rumours in the tourism industry to reduce profits and attempting (and failing) to block IMF loans.
  • The US government exaggerated the threat posed to US medical students.
  • The US government exaggerated the amount of weapons in Grenada, implying they could be used to further Soviet-Cuban-Nicaraguan interests.
  • The US government lied about Grenada expanding its air force and building airport for military purposes.
  • The invasion violates rules established by the OAS (Organization of American States) and United Nations.
  • US soldiers committed war crimes against Cubans in Grenada.
  • Following the invasion and restoration of liberalism, the subsequent leader engaged in electoral fraud and torture of political opponents by the US-trained police occurred.

Blum is a reliable writer who cites good sources, so I trust him. But I'd like to know which claims our anti-socialist friends and comrades dispute.

Bonus question for socialists, why did PJM members kill Maurice Bishop?
