The Michael Bay Transformers movies were one of the better and more unique blockbuster film series in recent memory.

For years, movie critics and audiences have mocked Michael Bay’s 5 Transformers movies. We’ve criticized the juvenile humor, ham-fisted product placement, explosions, objectification of women, offensive stereotypes, nonsensical action, and uninteresting characters and plot. But looking back on them, they are really unique, unlike most tentpole movies made today.

Michael Bay has a distinct directing style, where he uses a ton of slow-motion, quick editing, orange/blue contrasts, and his trademark explosions, as he desires to go bigger and more destructive with each film. He never once caved in to critics who hated the lack of story structure or relatable characters, or fans who hated how the films treated the robots. And despite presumably being about good robots fighting evil robots, the plot was completely unpredictable and insane, as they suddenly went to China for no reason, or implied that they were alive during King Arthur's reign, or stopped dead to explain the Romeo & Juliet laws. Bay kept indulging in CGI and excess and made the plot whatever he wanted, while also showing a general hatred of humans, and there's something fascinating about a guy making 5 movies that are a giant "Fuck You!" to everyone watching.

Nowadays, blockbuster film series try to appeal to as many people in the general audience as possible, while also making sure to please movie critics by following a predictable story structure. The biggest offenders are all the series owned by Disney, particularly the MCU and the new Star Wars movies. Those movies have all become clichΓ©d family-friendly Hero's Journeys where a Chosen One has to fight a generic villain who wants to kill them and/or take over the world. They are also openly obsessed with making their casts diverse while attempting to make the characters relatable and giving them all something to do, and leaving audiences satisfied at the end and excited for the next film. Michael Bay, on the other hand, never even attempted this with Transformers, and didn't care about who he offended.

I'd rather watch BayFormers over an MCU film or a Disney Star Wars movie, because unlike the directors of those films, Bay is an auteur with a clear, unique voice that appears through the films, and they never followed studio-mandated formulas or worried about getting people excited for future movies. I think the only other modern film series that's both this enormous and with a singular vision is Zack Snyder's DC films, which also took

What’s your favorite ongoing film series?

Blankies, what’s your favorite still-running series of movies? (Can’t be a whole universe, but a series within one is fine.) Something you’d perhaps consider buying as a whole once it’s complete.

I’m going to be the first one to say John Wick. Assuming the next couple are at least as good as the first three, I’d love a big, chunky neon box set on my shelf. Can’t wait to see how they top themselves for the action in the fourth entry.

[QUESTION] How would you adapt Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye/Lost Light as a feature film trilogy? Or as a TV series?

So I'm going through the entire series and at MTMTE #8 I'm already feeling overwhelmed by HOW MUCH PLOT there is. So I'd like to ask you all the question I am trying to solve (out of curiosity):

How would you adapt Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye/Lost Light as a feature film trilogy?

Let's assume a few things: 1) would NOT be in the same universe as the Bay series, 2) These films would have had series of films prior to these three that resemble the IDW Phase 1 Great War storylines, 3) There isn't a parallel RID/OP film series to crossover for events like "Dark Cybertron" or the Unicron series.

Like would 1 film = 1 season? What elements would probably be brought over from the comics to the films? What would be left out? Who would be the main antagonist of each film? What storylines do you keep? Omit? What characters would you keep? Omit? How would you streamline it?

Alternatively, how would you do it as a TV show?

I suspect it would be easier to incorporate more characters, character development, and storylines from the comics in a TV show versus movie, but humor me with responses to both please.

Mixed About the Transformers live films by Michael Bay. Transformers: Robots In Disguise latest TV series: Thoughts on Both?

Although the animation, the graphics and the action are great in the films, there are many extremely rude and annoying human characters that piss the crap out of me. In addition, what's with a lot of the sensuality in the live films when the franchise isn't about that. And what about bringing back Transformers that were killed off? They brought Optimus Prime and Megatron back several times.

And the latest Transformers TV series. The action is great, but I wish there were more Autobots and Decepticons. Plus, I didn't like it's set 50 years later after Transformers Prime.

What are your thoughts?

How I would have done Transformers film series, part 1: Transformers(2007)

Ten thousand years ago, Cybertron, a planet in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The race of sentient machines that inhabit this planet have became engulfed in war. At the center of that war is the All Spark, an ancient artifact of unimaginable power, that according to legend gave life to the Cybertronian race. The All Spark is guarded by the Autobots, led by Sentinel Prime. His second in command, Optimus Prime, stands guard at the temple in Simfur where the All Spark is housed, along with Bumblebee and five other unnamed Autobots. Explosions can be heard all around them, and Optimus tells them to be ready. As his mouthplate shuts and Bumblebee's battle visor come down, the barrier they had erected is blasted through, and they are face to face with Megatron. Megatron tells Optimus that they can do this the easy or hard way, either way is fine with him. Megatron tells his lieutenant, who is later revealed to be Barricade, to get word to Shockwave that the All Spark is almost theirs.

As Megatron boasts that he will take on the seven Autobots alone, he is reinforced by a horde of Decepticons who lay siege to the position. The Autobots fall one by one, with only Optimus and Bumblebee left standing, and as Optimus prepares to take on the last of their attackers, Bumblebee engages Megatron solo despite Optimus's pleas not to. Bumblebee holds his own while trash talking, albeit briefly, before Megatron catches him and violently rips out his vocal processor and dropping his battered body to the ground, telling him to make a wise crack now. As Megatron moves on the damaged Optimus, Prime pushes a button and the All Spark is launched into the blackness of space. Megatron screams in anger and prepares to to fight Optimus when Autobot reinforcements arrive. As Megatron stands over Bumblebee, he and Optimus argue back and forth with Megatron telling Optimus the All Spark would be his as the title card comes up.

It's a common complaint with the Transformers series, but, for me, Edge of Tomorrow has been the only modern film where I had a hard time following the action in-scene.

In all, I wasn't very impressed with the alien design for the film, and I think this was a big part. With so many tentacles whipping around and the requisite amount of debris in the air as a result, I had a hard time following what was actually happening across the frame.

I understand that the creators were trying to create chaos to some extent, but perhaps they were too successful? In the end, I wasn't really tracking action as it happened, as much as trying to keep track of people dying.

Did anyone else have this problem?

Marvel was right to make Eternals a film instead of a D+ series…

…specifically because of the epic nature of the film. I went to see it in theatres twice, and both times I was blown away by the cinematography and sound because it translates so well on a big screen with surround sound and everything else that makes the experience truly cinematic.

After seeing the film on D+ yesterday, it just didn’t hit the same. The movie was still great and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I found myself feeling a little let down during some scenes because they just didn’t feel that… epic? Idk, that’s the best way I can describe it. It just felt muted. The most disappointing part was Arishem… I went from feeling as small as Ajak when he pooped up in the theatres to feeling… meh, while watching it on TV.

A series would obviously have allowed more time to flesh out the characters, which appears to be peoples’ main gripes with the film (that and pacing), but I think they did a pretty good job fleshing out these 10 characters in 2.5 hours. Maybe not all of them, but that’s gonna happen when you’re essentially doing 10 origin stories.

TL;DR Eternals in the theatre πŸ‘, Eternals on D+ πŸ‘Ž

Is there any film series you feel has a "perfect cannon" that is untarnished by lesser entries?

So obviously this is extremely subjective, but are there any series or franchises you can think of where every entry is solid without any entries that you personally dismiss?

For example, many people will dismiss any Terminator entry after T2. Other people reject the Star Wars prequels or sequels. But is there any series you believe got every entry right and is legitimate?

Edit: Yes, I misspelled "canon." To clarify, I'm talking about film series that have the same official continuity, not a "thematic series." Also I'm only asking about films, if you think a film series is great but the TV spin-off or video game is bad, that's okay.

Films, TV series and fiction set in Adelaide. The more obscure the better.

Here's my list.

Glad Rags. Mid 90s kids series filmed near the Central Markets. Had the kid from E Street in it.

Sebastian and the Sparrow. 1988 movie directed by Scott Hicks. Starred a kid who was also a roller skater, but he wasn't from Skateline so he wasn't as cool as us.

The Space Demons, Sky Maze, Shinkei trilogy by Gillian Rubenstein.

Lemon Tree Passage - It's set in Byron Bay but I know it was filmed locally because I was an extra. The beach scenes are Horseshoe Bay but if they want to call it something else, fine.

Absolute gems that need no mention.. Here's Humphrey and Fat Cat, Curiosity Show, Bad Boy Bubby.

News Free Zone. 1985, ABC. This show was wierd, it was kind of like Not the 9 O'clock News and Kenny Everett Video Show. I watched an episode being filmed in the gym and pool at the Super Centre. It started legendarary comedian Grahame Bond (Aunty Jack).

Some 90s kids show about runaways filmed at the Islington Workshops which I can't remember the name of.

My father, who loves spy movies, is adamant that The Bourne Legacy (the only film that does not feature Matt Damon as Jason Bourne) is actually the best of the series. Anyone else have random movie opinions from their parents?

To be clear, my dad has no aversion to Matt Damon as an actor, and likes many of his movies, including other movies in the Bourne series. However, he believes The Bourne Legacy expertly continues the story by combining elements of the original three films while showing a "side story" that is in some ways superior to Bourne's storyline.

I don't agree with him, but it's a weird enough opinion that it made me curious to know if anyone else has random opinions from family members that seem off-base, but make you question what you think about a movie or series?
