CMV: The tiered internet service mockups (+$5/month for facebook and other social media websites) are completely absurd and not a viable product/valid fear even for companies that have a virtual monopoly

Here is an example of a internet tier mockup that I think is absurd. I'm specifically talking about the blocking/allowing certain websites aspect of it.

There are lots of reasons why this is both not viable and isn't a realistic worry:

  • I use VPN (need it for work), but once you allow someone to access VPN, they can go around all of your filters by using a relatively cheap (<$5/month) VPN service. So clearly VPN and other non-browser ports (since VPN can be set to any port) required for gaming would all only be available in the highest tier, which almost everyone will purchase.
  • It is impossible to categorize every website, so at some point they'll need to make a "and all uncategorized websites too" category, again, which would be in the top tier. People need obscure websites all the time and not being able to click a promising link on google would be an AWFUL user experience.
  • So we're left with the only potential tiering scheme is providing everything but removing key popular sites. Again, I believe that this would be such an awful user experience (especially considering most people buy internet for their household so even if a given family member/roommate can do without social sites, doesn't mean everyone will be on the same page) that nobody would buy this "slimmed down" internet product.
  • Minor Caveat: I do see a small instance that this could be used, such as a wikipedia only connection like what was offered on some kindles, but this isn't really a product tier, and I don't think it is an offering that should invoke fear either, so I view it as significantly different than the mockups.

Ultimately, 90%+ of internet users are going to stick to what they are used to and will pay more if they have to, so this change will largely just be maybe paying more.

Which brings me to my final point: A lot of people explicitly say that this is just an excuse to charge more. But ISPs don't need an excuse to charge more, they could simply start charging more, but they don't, because even monopolies have to fight pressures of supply and demand. If the ISPs could get away with charging more they would already be doing it. I don't think a change in product design that wouldn't affect 90%+ of their users would have a significant impact on how much they can get away with charging. I also think that the effort in building out those additional options, marketing them, etc. would not pay for

Why is Comcast allowed to offer tiered internet service?

Sorry if this is something that y'all have covered or I'm missing something simple. Comcast just "upgraded" my family from 50 mbps to 75 mbps, presumably to discourage us from switching to our new local fiber optic option. I looked it up and apparently they have different tiers of internet service all the way from 3 mbps up to 505. My question is whether or not tiering internet service like this is legal after the FCC's open internet decision in June.

Is there anywhere to get a tiered tea service?

I used to live in a town that had a super cute tea shop/restaurant where you could order an Afternoon Tea Service that was served with a personal pot of tea and 3 tiered tray holding finger sandwiches, finger desserts, and a sweet scone served with lemon curd and Devonshire cream. I really miss being able to go there and have little tea parties, does anyone know of a place around NOVA that serves something similar?

Thanks!

What's the social democratic opinion/stance on having a purely consumption-based taxation system? (tiered based on the necessity of the product or service, of course)

It's an idea that's been running in my head for a while now: a welfare state funded purely by a tiered consumption-based taxation system, where most products and services are subject to sales tax or VAT percentage based on whether the product or service is a necessity, luxury, or somewhere in between. Absolute necessities such as food ingredients, medicine, etc. will of course be exempt.

Will it be feasible in the long term? Should non-income sources of wealth such as inheritance and investments still be taxed alongside consumption? What could be potential issues when it comes to enforcing this system? Feel free to sound off in the comments.

Internet provider customer service rep wanted to be on the phone call with me while my sister was having a medical crisis and be involved in the conversation

REMINDER: I am not the OOP, this is a repost sub.

Warning: Unsatisfying update

Original Post

Internet provider customer service rep wanted to be on the phone call with me while my sister was having a medical crisis and be involved in the conversation.

We use a common internet provider, big American company name. We have internet with them and my mom called them to upgrade to include cable TV into the plan. She came to a plan agreement with them and the rep proceeded to pitch the new mobile phone plan that the company is rolling out. After the generic sales pitch my mom told her that she wasn't interested in switching cell phone providers, the rep wasn't relenting. Finally after 40m she talked my mom into a "well maybe we'll think about switching, but let me get my daughter to discuss the plan because she's on the plan too and is the one who pays the bill".

[NOTE: This was all on speaker phone so both my mom and me could hear her and she could hear us both. Also my mom is over 70 and knows almost nothing of cell phones, especially smart phones.]

This is where I came into the conversation. The rep pitched the sales deal to me and rambled off a bunch of junk tier phones at ridiculous prices. I was upfront with her about how those deals were awful and we weren't interested in the slightest. She kept pitching more and more info at me, I kept telling her that I'm not interested and to just process the cable TV part of the deal. She outright refused to process the order for cable upgrades without us agreeing to a phone plan. I told her that if phones were forced as part of the cable package that we were also no longer interested in adding cable and to cancel the whole plan.

She then hit me with this number. "The deal was going perfectly until you showed up. I don't want to do business with you, put your mom back on the phone." I called her on her underhanded and patronizing sales tactic and told her that it wasn't going to work on me, I knew the deal was terrible and not worth it. She began clapping back with rude comments like "I don't understand why you're so against a good deal, you don't know good deals" and "please leave so I can talk to your mom alone, she was sensible".

I told her I wanted her name so I could report her. She ignored my request and kept on doing her s
