If you learn best by doing: Try this tutorial about building a web based Rock, Paper, Scissors game using common frontend frameworks and libraries.

Background:

I have a self imposed indentured servitude with the bootcamp that got me started in my career. I’ve been mentoring there for the past several years, and while I’m primarily a backend engineer aiming to work more with architecture, this is an application I teach my frontend students. I firmly believe the only way to learn to write code is by writing code, therefore, I hope you’ll code along and ask any questions in the comments.

An ability to follow directions and a desire to get creative with the source code outside of this tutorial will yield the highest results.

[AskJS] I want to create a YouTube channel showing the nitty-gritty of programming and maintaining a web-app for 10+ years (scale: 40k monthly uniques, $20k/monthly). What topics are of interest to r/javascript?

As part of my new year's resolutions I want to get a little less camera shy and I thought I have a somewhat interesting story to share about being the solopreneur owner of a web app. This opens up the possibility to show all the code/analytics etc. without repercussions from any other stake-holders.

In terms of priorities, I wanted to ask you all what topics would you like to see covered? Here are some initial ideas I had. Feel free to add anything you don't see here.

(FYI: The site is a two-sided marketplace selling Word documents )

Coding Topic Ideas

  1. generating a maximally enjoyable development environment (e.g. seeding data, simulating cron, mirroring production as much as possible etc.)
  2. removing brittleness from integration tests that run on circleci
  3. dealing with the shitshow that is sales tax accounting across multiple currencies
  4. detecting and recovering from production bugs asap
  5. dealing with the real-world mess that is imperfect user input (e.g. when they type emails with a leading space or inconsistent capitalization; when they create a tag that is almost the same as a previous one β€”Β like E Guitar vs. Electric Guitarβ€”and now your data is split across two areas)
  6. discussing the 8+ year consequences of certain architectural/software design issues
  7. streamlining massive amounts of config
  8. multi-redundant systems of backup to prevent disaster
  9. designing error messages and a logging strategy that speeds up recovery from errors
  10. a tour of the most evil, insidious bugs I dealt with over the years (I keep a diary for them)
  11. payment systems in-depth (refunds, errors etc.)
  12. caching systems for performance
  13. Javascript frameworks β€”Β why I decided to tear mine out and stick with simple, modular JS.
  14. Choosing dependencies that don't come back and bite you in the ass (think about how the JSscape has changed in the last ten years...)

Marketing/Business Topics Ideas

  1. how I use data to decide to add/remove a feature
  2. AB testing a web app
  3. technical SEO (microdata, site structure for internal links, google's tools, sitemaps, etc.) β€”Β I get 85% of my traffic (and therefore revenue) from SEO, so I know a thing or two
  4. how I use JS and integration tests on all tracking code (critical to get right in my business)
  5. auto-email systems to previous customers for extra sales
  6. Adwords workflow to drive revenue
  7. Analytics workflow to figure out what content working
  8. Writing copy that gets sales (what worked for me

Dylan and Hannah G on the rocks

So I'm a friend of Hannah G's and I would like to share some information with you. Hannah g and Dylan have been on the rocks for quite a while now and it began when he first shaded Hannah B which she told me made her quite upset. Hannah has also told me that she felt pressured in paradise to Dylan and that he has been struggling since he has been reading many Reddit posts about how Hannah deserves better.

I would just like to add a few things. Firstly Dylan has been really controlling with her and has told her that she can't be friends with Hannah B at all who wasn't happy with how he has treated her post-show. She also really hated his behavior at the rolling loud concert and considered breaking up with him then. I've also heard that Dylan has really struggled with feeling secure in their relationship because he constantly reads comments about how Hannah could do better or will leave him. Tyler is also really angry with Dylan and didn't attend the engagement party because of Jed. Tyler is also upset that Dylan has been shading Hannah B.

Nearly 30 years ago, a guy jumped off a stack of speakers at a Nirvana concert. A photographer captured him in mid-flight and now the pic is one of the most iconic images of the Grunge/Alternative Rock era. No one knows who the stage diver is???

Almost 30 years ago (Jan 6, 1990), a guy jumped off a 15 foot high stack of speakers at an early Nirvana concert at the UW campus in Seattle, Washington. Photographer Charles Peterson begged him to stop climbing, but the guy wouldn't listen and Peterson instead took the famous photo when he jumped into the crowd. The stage diver was wearing British Knights hightops and was caught safely by the crowd below. The diver would be around 50 - 55 years old now. This photo has been reprinted countless times online, on shirts, books and all sorts of different mediums.

The mystery is that no one has ever claimed to be that guy. For any Nirvana, Seattle, or grunge music fan, the pic that Peterson captured is one of the more iconic images. There were around 500 people in the audience that night. The jumper was a point of conversation that night and immediately afterwards. I was in the crowd below the jumper and still am in contact with ten others (all UW students) who were at the show, none of us knew then (or now) who the person was. It was a general admission show ($4 for students, $6 for non-students).

Tad (another Sub Pop band) opened and had a crew filming the concert for a video. Two other bands were on the opening bill (The Gits and Crutchbird). There is a rumor that the TAD film crew filmed the jumper and/or at least part of the Nirvana show, but no one knows if there is any surviving video. The 30th Anniversary of that pic is coming up and it would be cool if anyone knew of anyone who knew anything about the identity of the jumper or had any other photos/video to help ID the guy.

I'm currently rewatching 3rd Rock From the Sun and I gotta say this show is actually pretty hilarious, and the actors (and writers of course) all do a great job with the fish-out-of-water premise

I'm almost through season one right now (was a casual viewer when it first aired) and the show has been hitting on a lot of marks.

Lithgow is just great with his overzealous absurdity, and I gotta say French Stewart kills it with his physical comedy/slight mannerisms (like a discount Kramer), idiocy and overall look. Kristen Johnston is great at playing up her newfound sexuality and exploring her femininity and relationships. Gordon-Levitt is great too, and it's just wild to see him so young again (and in one episode declaring he's now black as he sits there playing the blues).

I think it's actually a pretty poignant take on humanity and society at times. And it is a LOT dirtier and filled with innuendos then I remembered. As aliens studying humans, they're all so preoccupied with sex and it actually touches on some interesting and heavier topics like consent and gender roles. It also has a couple episodes that tackles race in an interesting way.

And also, it's tongue-in-cheek lewd at times (paraphrased):

> POLICE OFFICER: "Dick, are you ready to finger your perp?"

> DICK [SITTING NEXT TO DR. MARY ALBRIGHT]: "Well I've been trying to but she won't let me!"

Anyway, just wanted to share my opinion here and see if anyone remembered this show or had rewatched eps lately and had anything they wanted to add. We'll see how the rest of the seasons hold up as I go on :)
