The oil company Esso was so named to benefit from the association to the acronym SO (i.e. Standard Oil). Standard Oil was split into many smaller companies due to the Sherman Antitrust Act. By calling itself Esso, Standard Oil of New Jersey maintained a familiarity in the minds of customers.
One of the other post split companies was Standard Oil of Indiana, which later became Amoco and used the old Standard Oil logo almost unaltered.
