A list of puns related to "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"
Hi, just found this subreddit. I'm very much an amateur composer, but I recently finished a big project, writing a soundtrack for the classic silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. If anyone would care to watch some or all of it with my score, you can find it here: http://hep.bu.edu/~slinden/Caligari_final_libtheora.ogv I'd be thrilled to hear any comments or criticisms anyone might have of it!
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - Poster
What is this? See link below!
"Step rrrrright up! Presenting for the first time: Cesare the somnambulist! The miraculous Cesare. Twenty-three years old, he has slept for twenty-three years continuously, day and night! Right before your eyes, Cesare will awaken from his death-like trance."
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a German silent horror film, and is considered the quintessential work of German Expressionist cinema. The plot is fairly simple, too. It revolves around a hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to commit murders. The atmosphere of the film is dark, twisted, and futuristic. All of the buildings are sharp and pointed, and lean and twist in highly unusual angles.
This is one of my favorite silent horror movies. I watch it every year in October, as it is included in my "horror-tober" movie list. If you haven't seen this one yet, it is imperative that you do. I find myself a bit difficult to scare, and this one scares the ever loving crap out of me every time I watch it. I can't explain why.

I am woefully ignorant of movies before 1950 and silent movies? Shit, I have seen one or two. So, a friend posted about "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (mentioning her son called it Danny Devito and The Cure, which in hindsight is perfect) and linked to a decent You Tube HD version and combined with my desire to check off films from the 1001 list, so I went for it. I had no pre-expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I mentioned in an earlier review of "The Great Train Robbery" (1903) that it was the first movie to have a sequential plot. "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" might then be the first movie with a serious plot twist, a la Christopher Nolan. A travelling fair comes to town and a magician seeks to display his own freak show, in the guise of a somnambulist, or sleep walker. When they arrive, strange things happen and people are murdered, but no one can understand why. That is, until the best friend of one of the victims takes charge and seeks answers.
This film is wonderful. It is a great example of how the industry went from stage plays to films. The sets are artistic and evocative, the acting is solid, and overall we learn that not all is as it seems. A lovely piece of political sedition with the bureaucrats siting on seats up high, ignoring the populace below. Crazy how 100 years later and the industry completely transformed, yet the messages still remain so similar.

Much more ambient oriented music than the previous albums.
