A few years laterβ¦
Teles walked along the city street with Audix nearby. Both of them were moving with purpose although they werenβt sure where their destination might be for that afternoon. They had learned that dawdling was a sure way to have someone pick their pockets, try to mug them or even just beg for money.
Neither of them were saying anything as they walked quickly out of the city, Audix flipping through a book which heβd so far refused to explain. It was something that was clearly cause for concern based on the way he muttered and grumbled under his breath.
The once-grand city of Ousima was practically in ruins. Gutters overflowed from the torrential, warm rain of an afternoon thunderstorm. It poured down the cobbled streets which had at one time been perfectly maintained, but which was overgrown from lack of traffic and maintenance. A few scattered people hurried between alleyways with furtive looks towards the two adventurers, but Teles was completely unconcerned by the attention and Audix was engrossed with the book.
βSo, what are you reading?β Teles asked, curiosity finally winning over.
Audix looked up and then startled when he saw the dome that the heavy rain was pouring down. It crackled with magical lightning, but it was doing its job and making sure that Audixβs book wasnβt going to get wet β at least, not while he was reading it.
βFound it in the council chambers.β Audix admitted. βIt looks like they were trying to do something with it, but Iβm not sure.β
βOdd.β
βIβd say so. I thought the temple might know what it is.β Audix said, as he slipped the book into the lining of his jacket. He looked around at the crumbling buildings and sighed as he shoved his hands into his pockets and kicked at a loose cobblestone with the moody air of someone who was sorely disappointed and wanted to be asked about it.
This was a wide road that they were walking down, and up ahead they could see the Memorial that had been the pride of this city not fifty years ago.
