A list of puns related to "Takarazuka Revue"
I don't even care about english subtitles or whatever, I'm just really curious to watch it. I love thunderbolt fantasy! I love musicals! But it seems really hard to get ahold of? My googling is failing me..
Currently studying for an assignment in my East Asian studies course, was reading about how theatre has changed over the years in Japan, "most theatre groups until at least the 17th century were exclusively male." And then read about Takarazuka, the all-female revue theatre, founded in 1914, where the actresses play roles of both men and women, in both contrast to and similar to the original model of kabuki where solely men played both male and female roles. I realized the connection when I saw the name Takarazuka : ) I always liked OHSHC's attention to history and culture, thought this fact was pretty neat on top of that, drop any other tidbits of knowledge you got below : )
There were some subs done for AWA a year or two ago, but the group isn't releasing the subs online. Have there been any other English subs for the TBF Takarazuka Revue that are available for download or streaming somewhere? I have searched all over the place to no avail.
If ya'll ain't fans of the Takarazuka Revue, you really should be. They're a Japanese all-female theatre troupe that has been around for 100 years, and have famously been a high art haven for people who like not-so-hidden lesbian subtext. No big surprise, the theatre group is known for being a haven for lesbians in a notoriously conservative country.
Actresses tend to play either exclusively male or female roles, and the male roles are hotly contested. The ladies who play the male leads are pretty much pop idols who have fan clubs with swooning fans.
They've adapted all kinds of works, including many listed here, such as Pride and Prejudice, Romeo and Juliet, Sailor Moon, and Ocean's 11.
Here's a clip from their Romeo and Juliet. Enjoy. :3

So, I posted this in that movies thread, but after seeing the responses, I feel like more of you needed to be aware that you needed this in your lives.
