Anyone whos attended high school, likely has memories of the 'cool kids'. You know the ones who seemed to float through the hallways, and passed judgment on anything and everything with a pulse. The ones who never did any work but were cool enough with the teachers that they skated by and popular enough that letting them copy your paper was an honor rather than a favor. But see the thing is, in order for those popular kids to copy the work and pass that class, SOMEONE has to actually pay attention and do the work while they bullshit in the back. Apparently, that someone is me.
My store is a fairly busy one, and I am ALWAYS doing something, whether it is truck, tech work at the bench, helping on the floor, cutting down a long line by hopping on a register, etc. Now this in and of itself is not an issue, as it is all apart of my job. I take pride in the fact that by the end of the day, I know I have made myself useful and gave it 110%. What bothers me is that the other techs are not pulling the same weight. They move sluggishly, and have no initiative. They help customers, sure, but only if a manager is watching or if they believe it will result in a tech sale. From a management perspective, at first I did not see how they were not being called out. And then it hit me.
Watching one of these associates (who is a female by the way) goof around with a male manager while several customers walked by unhelped (who I ended up attending too of course). Observing how two associates who are supposed to be checking customers out would instead be having a three way conversation with a manager about video games while I work the floor. Its high school. I am the kid doing the classwork while Mr. and Mrs. Homecoming text each other from two seats away. The one who all the most likely to be successful nominees rush to before class to get the answers to the homework.
The associate in particular who really pisses me off is a female tech. In order to get out of working, she engages a manager in bullshitty conversation. Since she is at least somewhat attractive, it works, and next thing you know thirty minutes have gone by and she hasnβt done a damn thing worth her hourly wage. Iβm coming into work tomorrow with a push up bra and butt pads, so maybe Iβll be able to taken nice long breaks too. I donβt mind working hard, but I am a grown man, and I finished high school several years ago. It was bad enough that I donβt have any desire to go for a second run, even it is paid t
