The Curious Case of Edward Teller and Stanislaw Ulam

Is anyone able to offer additional insight into those potential forces in play that so thoroughly distorted and disfigured Dr. Teller’s historical portrait or recollection of Stan and his key contribution(s) with respect to thermonuclear ignition and burning?

It seems to be both in and out of his character; making it all the more confusing...

John von Neumann and Stanislaw Ulam are flying first class to Vienna...

... when suddenly the plan pitches forward and starts hurtling downward. Looking around, they see nobody else who knows what to do, so they enter the cockpit and find the pilot and copilot slumped over unconscious. Ulam sits down at the controls and starts looking them over. "Do something, do something!" screams von Neumann. "We're about to die!"

"Calm down and give me a minute," says Ulam. "I'm just a simple Pole in a complex plane!"

Dropped my best ever dad joke & no one was around to hear it

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies πŸ˜‚

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

Two stages fission-only nuclear weapons. Are they a thing? Could they be relevant nowadays? Your thoughts?

Two stages nuclear weapons can use nuclear fusion as a significant percentage of their yield. But originally, staging was envisioned by Stanislaw Ulam as a way to produce highly efficient fission-only weapons where a primary would compress - using radiation implosion - a second fissile core (way more efficiently than conventional explosives). Such a device was tested during operation Castle as the Nectar device (it ended using some Lithium-Deuteride boosting but apparently not in a significant way). There is an archived Reddit post on Castle Nectar. According to Nuclear Weapons Archive, it "was the closest to original predictions (1.8Mt) of any of the other Castle devices" so we can assume that it was probably a more straightforward design than early pure thermonuclear (fission-fusion-fission) devices.

On the question of two stages fission-only nuclear weapons, Nuclear Weapon Archive (4.5.3) also states : "Now, once one considers using substantial amounts of HEU in the secondary, the question of why the fusion fuel is needed at all arises. The answer: it probably is not essential. The idea of imploding fissile material is what set Stanislaw Ulam on the path to that led eventually to thermonuclear weapons. But with the availability of large amounts of HEU, and the trend toward smaller weapon yields (...), the Ulam's idea of using radiation implosion to create a light weight high-efficiency pure fission weapon returns as a viable possibility. It is an interesting question whether all modern strategic nuclear weapons *are* in fact thermonuclear devices!"

My questions are simples: What are your thoughts on this statement ? Do you think they may be a viable design in terms of yield-to-weight ratio ?

I was wondering whether some late nuclear powers that had not the luxury to conduct large nuclear test campaigns (India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel?) may have considered such a design as they would only need to master radiation implosion without the issues of fusion fuel ignition. Obviously such a design requires more fissile materials but for a small arsenal is it really an issue?
