I’m legitimately traumatized. I can’t stop thinking about it. The more I do, the more I love it. It’s ambition and thinking are huge. It’s engrossing. It made me so fucking mad and anxious I wanted to kill something. It’s one of the more effective movies I’ve ever seen. An enigma.

I didn’t turn it off because I wanted/needed the catharsis of a good climax. I needed the pressure to be relieved. Im not sure it delivered that, instead it’s climaxed reshaped my perception of the entire journey that came before it. I was still stressed, but also motivated. This surreal nightmare echo’d a truth about the world that made me want to be better. What more can you ask of art?

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen another movie that made me feel anything close to the same way. Do you have any suggestions? It might take me a couple weeks to build up the strength to watch it, but i really want to be able to find another experience like this.

I've recently taken an interest in Finland's role in World War 2 so I've been digging and found a film to watch loosely based on the subject. I do really apologize if I'm grossly misinterpreting the purpose of the subreddit, I am kind of banking on native Finnish speakers having more understanding of the source material. Hopefully someone has seen this film.

I haven't read the novel that the movie is based on, and I'm certainly no historian. I feel as though I'm missing something. Around October 1st of 1941 the fictional Finnish machine gun company that the movie is following arrives to the Russian city of Petrozavodsk, from there it follows briefly the story of a particular soldier and his relationship with a Russian woman and her friends of college age.

I have a few questions and I'll try to keep them concise:

1. When the soldier in question is walking with a few of his comrades through the streets, they pass by a group of women marching in unison with farm equipment, they're singing an anti Russian hymn. Who are these women if it's a Russian city? Were there Finns in Petrozavodsk at the time of Finnish occupation? Some holdouts from the Winter War? Was there a large Finnish immigration into the city after its capture?
2. How does this soldier know the names of two children in the city in the scene directly afterwards, he feeds them his rations and teaches them to say "Down with the Russians, up with Finland!" these must not be Russian children as that wouldn't make too much sense...
3. Finally, it seems as if he knows the woman that the group of men visit directly after this scene as well, because otherwise the visit would be a little random, if that's the case, then how?

I'd appreciate any suggestions on where else to ask these if no one here can help (or wants to, that's understandable) If it turns out to be unwelcome here I'll delete the post no problem.
