Been sleeping later and now connecting the dots as to why (revenge bedtime procrastination and its relationship with introversion)

Its pretty cut and dry my boyfriend hasn't been getting called into work for ages havent had one of my me time mornings in a while. I work second shift he works normal hours, barley see eachother during the week but we have eachother on the weekends, it works for us. Dont get me wrong I do enjoy his company but I had a steady schedule for a while it wasn't till he stopped going to work that i started pushing my bedtime later. This all played out subconsciously, gives me the theory that for me atleast quality alone time is essential and my brain will go behind my back and sabotage other areas of my life to get it even if im generally enjoying what im doing with my time not alone(spending time with bf/ my job that I can genuinely say I like a lot)

Sucks though this late night revenge procrastinating activity is like the junk food of alone time. Sleep deprivation is also taking its toll. ๐Ÿ˜’

Thank god hes going back today.

Anyone's relationship being affected by "revenge bedtime procrastination"?

My girlfriend (30f) refuses to go to bed at a decent time because she sees that her free time is taken by work so she gets revenge on that by staying up. I've read recently this is called revenge bedtime procrastination.

I (30m) get kept awake from this and poor sleep is affecting my mental health and work efficiency. I've spoken to her about it and I just seems to get a contrarian response of her doing it more. I had poor mental health to begin with and this just puts my brain in the bin.

She can get by with a few hours sleep whereas I feel like I'm about die. I walk around like a zombie.

What can be done about contradicting sleeping patterns when you only have one bedroom?

EDIT: People saying she should do it in another room and come to bed quietly - she'll do her whole night time routine and I wake up then can't get back to bed. Wardrobes opening and closing, lamp on, doors opening and closing. It's pretty contemptuous. Like if she doesn't need that much sleep then I must be a liar.

PSA: โ€œRevenge bedtime procrastinationโ€ is not a real thing. Acute or chronic anxiety is.

Not as relevant for insomniacs with the relevant medical circumstances. However, for those who think you might be victims of what has been termed โ€œrevenge bedtime procrastinationโ€ in recent population studies, hereโ€™s a newsflash: you suffer from either acute or chronic stress at night.

Fundamentally, it is the physiological effect of stress on your brain and body that is preventing you from sleeping. Many of you are aware of this, and many others attribute this behavior more to โ€œbeing a procrastinatorโ€, without acknowledging the underling cause, which is stress.

For some, the โ€œbedtime procrastinationโ€ pursuant to stress at night takes the form of dopamine generating activities like watching videos or playing games. This is a fine coping mechanism but donโ€™t be mistaken about the purpose of the activity - you are doing this to mitigate the effects of stress. Dopamine generating activity is ok at doing this, which is why you are doing it.

Ultimately, although dopaminergic activity is eventually effective at mitigating stress, it generally takes awhile (sometimes hours) to sufficiently reduce stress to allow sleep. This means you are going to bed an hour, sometimes several hours, after you should. Over the course of several days, this is actually counterproductive to mitigating stress, as you get less sleep and worse quality sleep due to inconsistent timing. Poor sleep is associated with a 30% increase in next-day anxiety, making it harder to mitigate the stress the next day and requiring even more coping.

Others take a more direct approach to stress mitigation at night, such as supplements (theanine/magnesium), meditation and even weed. In the long run, these direct approaches will be more effective because they require less time to be effective at inducing sleep on average than dopaminergic activities like movies or games.

*TLDR: if you think you have โ€œrevenge bedtime procrastinationโ€, you fundamentally suffer from elevated nighttime anxiety. Do not make the mistake of attempting to cope with this anxiety with dopamine generating mechanisms like games, movies, videos, or other โ€œrewardingโ€ activities. Although they work a little bit, they take awhile to work at night, and will keep you stressed in the long run by preventing good sleep. Be honest and aware that you likely have elevated stress, and explore more direct โ€œcalmingโ€ solutions like supplements, meditation, etc. This will work faster and let you sleep better and live better in the long run.

Revenge bedtime procrastination hits again

Super frustrated with myself. Iโ€™m awake at 215a and have to be up at 645a. Did the exact same thing last night.

Why is it so important to be up? Because I have clincals/finals tomorrow. I didnโ€™t even study tonight because I took a nap and when I woke up, I watched TikTok thanks to executive dysfunction.

I can only hope that tomorrow will be better.

Sleep procrastination/ Revenge bedtime procrastination

Whatโ€™s up fellow HDers. Itโ€™s currently 4:37amโ€ฆโ€oh good for you being an early riserโ€ you may say, wrong. I got in bed at midnight thirty and have not been able to go to sleep. I guess you can call it the Revenge bedtime procrastination or whatever but idk if itโ€™s technically that bc when I read about RBP itโ€™s defined as wanting to have some free time at night bc ur so busy during the day. Well thatโ€™s not what I feel. When people ask me how am I able to stay up so late or why I stay up so late I literally sound like a psycho. Iโ€™ve decided that my answers are:

  1. If I go to sleep now, then the day is over and thatโ€™s another day of my life that is over and the next one will start and be over quick again and Iโ€™m just wasting my life if I sleep. Which is CRAZY I KNOW BUT I JUST CANT NOT THINK LIKE THAT @ NIGHT OR
  2. I realize that I didnโ€™t do enough during the day so now I need to stay up and do random crap to make it a worthwhile day

Now usually I stay up until 2-3am every night and some days I wake up at 7 and some days I wake up at 10, it just depends on which classes I have that day. But like obviously getting 4-5 hours a sleep is not sufficient and when I get into bed I am so tired and itโ€™s not like my daytime ADHD where I just canโ€™t turn my brain offโ€ฆ itโ€™s ~different~ bc my brain feels dead and I can physically feel my eyebags getting heavier and darker by the minute but my brain has a mind of its own and is like โ€œoh ur tired? lol sike letโ€™s research the Yakuza (Organized crime in Japan) like WHY?? Does anyone else do you this or know why I do it? & Donโ€™t even try to say any bs about taking melatonin or putting my phone down an hour to two hours before sleeping blah blah. Thatโ€™s the same energy as telling someone with ADHD they should just get a planner.

Day 248 - Granting myself permission for some revenge bedtime procrastination

I'm so stressed out, I'm on the verge of tears every minute of the day, there were a few times I couldn't hold it in any longer and had to let myself cry. I did everything I could and held it together for most of the day. I got as much work done as I could. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath whenever I had the chance. I'm laying in bed now looking at my favorite subreddits; some knitting, arts and crafts, power washing ... the usual stuff that makes me smile. It's helping relieve some of the pain from the stress I feel; I'm ready to sleep and hopeful that tomorrow will be a better day.

Kicking my awful habit of revenge bedtime procrastination

Nothing good happens after 2am, nothing productive anyways. Iโ€™ve been aware of this for a long time, but somehow itโ€™s a fact I struggle to convince myself at 2am. Why does staying up later feel so good? Until it doesnโ€™t.

I wake up way too late, feeling awful and get nothing done. Itโ€™s a root of many bad habits.

Does anyone have any tips about kicking this habit?

Revenge Bedtime Procrastination hack: Donโ€™t pick a bed time. Pick a getting-ready-for-bed time.

I resist all bedtimes no matter what. And I refuse to spend my limited energy fighting a battle I canโ€™t win.

Making this change has made going to bed one of my favorite parts of the day.

Even the night before a flight or important day, I never force myself to go to bed at a specific time. Instead, I pick a fairly arbitrary time after which I stop doing things that wake my brain up.

First I turn down the lights to signal to my brain that weโ€™re coming in for a landing. Then I start getting things out of the way.

โ€˜If I brush my teeth now I donโ€™t have to worry about it right before bed.โ€™

โ€˜Let me plug in my phone so I can relax, knowing Iโ€™ll have a charged phone tomorrow.โ€™

โ€˜Better put a glass of water by the bed. And while Iโ€™m here, might as well take my meds.โ€™

I often stay up for a while longer. I might have a snack or play some cozy video games. Or I might decide to stretch or meditate, since Iโ€™m starting to feel relaxed.

I can do whatever I want as long as itโ€™s not waking up my brain. So no important conversations, absolutely no exposure to work, no โ€˜getting things doneโ€™. Just zone out/chill out time. I get in my pjs and might move to the bedroom and get in bed.

My brain gets what itโ€™s craving, my body responds to the environment without my help, and I start to feel ready for rest. By that point, because it was my idea and not an external (albeit self-created) pressure, thereโ€™s nothing stopping me from rolling over and closing my eyes.

I use to label myself as a who prefers to stay up late and hated waking up early. But when I found out what revenge bedtime procrastination was, it made me realize that I stay up late because nighttime was the only time had an escape from a unstable and toxic day life. Like for example in middle and high School were the worse times for me, If I wasn't at home being verbally and emotionally abused, I was at school being bullied and mistreated by teachers and peers.

Revenge Bedtime Procrastination is kicking my ass (vent/rant)

What is Revenge Bedtime Procrastination?

I work roughly 10 hours a day, on my feet the entire time, from 8am to 6:30pm or whenever work is done (the latest I ever worked was 9pm). I purposefully picked this schedule so I could have more than a measly 2 days off; my husband works 3rd shift (hustling for that overnight differential) so the weekend is really the only time we get to see each other for more than a couple hours per day.

Every night is the same thing. He leaves for work, and no matter whether I try to relax or actually be productive I just cannot get to sleep. There's always one more thing I want to do, one more video I want to watch, one more distraction. Sometimes I'm just not tired. Next thing I know, it's after midnight, and when I wake up in the morning I feel like shit. It's even spilling into my weekends which wouldn't be too big of a deal except that I either wake up early anyway and feel awful, or I sleep so fucking late that I miss out on actually enjoying the time away from work. I'm breaking out, my appetite is all over the place, last night I got about 5 hours of sleep and had so much caffeine this morning that hours later, my left eye is twitching. And I know I should go to bed at a decent time tonight but I have shit to do! Or sometimes it'll take me months to do something because I feel like I don't have enough time to get it done so I never start!

I want out. My husband supports this idea as long as I'm doing something productive with my time and trying to make a little money but as someone who drank the Kool -aid for such a long time, the idea of working part time or on my own and bringing in less money than I make now straight-up gives me anxiety and so much guilt. We're also trying to start a family (I'm 35 and he's 37 so we're running out of time) so I'm even more terrified of the idea of us not having enough money.

I know I need therapy and have been trying to get started with it for months but keep running into issues. In the meantime though I'm slowly killing myself (really smart when you're trying to conceive /s) with stress and anxiety and guilt and sleep deprivation. I want to make a change but after working so hard for so long to get where we are now, I'm terrified of losing it. I don't know what to do.

Anybody else suffer from Revenge Bedtime Procrastination? If not, how do you cope having no life for 1/3+ of every week?

Day 9 - I learned about revenge bedtime procrastination, realized the struggle is real, and did something about it.

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I have a pretty good sleep routine. I go to bed at the same time every night and I wake up at the same time every morning. I usually take a sleep aid to help me fall and stay asleep.

On occasion however, I will tell myself I'm tired enough to go to sleep on my own but every time I do that I find myself scrolling through my phone for an hour or two. Then I realize I can't fall asleep and by then it's too late to take my meds.

I read something today about revenge bedtime procrastination, which is defined as "a phenomenon in which people who donโ€™t have much control over their daytime life refuse to sleep early in order to regain some sense of freedom during late night hours.โ€ I realized this is what I do when I don't take my sleep med.

The article suggested taking breaks during the day so today, I found five minutes to just sit and chill without distraction. It left me feeling energized and ready to face the remainder of the day.

Currently itโ€™s midnight. I know that I need to go to be to start the day right and early, so I can get lots of things done that I need to do, especially apply for jobs bc I need one.

However iโ€™ve just started a new tapestry and MY GOD staying up until 3am knitting it sounds EXTREMELY good right now, Iโ€™ll get to have more fun at the end of the day before I have to wake up and do the hard things I really need to do.

I really struggle with bedtime procrastination because I know that at night I donโ€™t have to feel bad about struggling to complete tasks, I can just have leisure time guilt free so I want to stay in this time as long as poss. But when I sleep through alarms and wake up late again the anxiety starts all over again.

Can anyone relate help? and can someone please tell me to go to bed and not carry on knitting ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

is it DSPD, "revenge bedtime procrastination," or both?

i think that i do have DSPD, as i fit all of the symptoms and identify with all the posts in this subreddit, but i recently learned about revenge bedtime procrastination so my imposter syndrome is now telling me that it's the latter and i'm doing this to myself.

i have always been a night owl. so is my mom, but i don't know enough about her to know if DSPD is a possibility for her. i had to do a late-day kindergarten class when i was a kid because i wouldn't go to bed until 11PM or midnight. i never ever took naps during designated nap time at pre school. i always stay up super late, take forever to fall asleep if i try before i'm sleepy, and sleep late into the day. sometimes for up to 12 hours if i'm not woken up. lately i am utterly useless during the day, can't actually focus on homework until 10PM at the earliest, don't fall asleep until 5AM, and sleep until my partner wakes me up at 1PM. my sleep schedule always varies but throughout this semester i've generally been falling asleep around 2AM-3AM, waking up for my 8AM classes, and napping once my classes are done for the day. this is typical whenever i have jobs with morning shifts too.

but at the same time, i'll usually get into bed early and then be on my phone for like an hour or two before i actually fall asleep. i'm kinda always tired but not always tired enough or in the way that i can actually fall asleep, and i hate laying in bed doing nothing just waiting to fall asleep when i know it probably won't happen anytime soon, so i pass the time on my phone. i fit the traits of RBP too: lack of free time or control during the day, awareness that i'll get less sleep and that it'll suck the next day, etc.

i just feel like i could probably try harder to fall asleep earlier but i don't, and i'll stay on my phone even if i'm "tired." is RBP just a side effect of DSPD and being a college student taking 18 credit hours, or am i mistaking RBP for DSPD? does anyone else have a similar issue?
