In Ukraine, the decision was made to lease a 1km strip of land along the border to a nato country such as Poland.
That way Ukraine would get the protection of nato without all the complications.
During the negotiations it was suggested to reduce the strip from one kilometer to one meter.

The nato negotiator said “I don’t understand. Yes my name is Vaulters, but I am Latvian.”
