As for the why: track automation is a critical part of creating movement in a mix where the different parts move back and forth, drawing focus and then getting out of the way for other parts. When you hear about professionals ‘riding the faders’ this is what is meant. They are using their ears and artistic sensibilities to ‘perform’ the volume (prominence) of an instrument (often in real-time); similar to how a conductor cues different sections of the orchestra to swell and recede depending on whether their part is the main melodic driver or whether they are supporting another section.
Anyway, when you automate the volume of your track it might be good at a certain point along the mix process, but towards the end of the mix when you are making final adjustments you may decide that the entire instrument is a couple of deebs too loud or too quiet. If you’ve automated the vol you can’t make a quick adjustment with a fader, you have to go in and automate volume again. By automating a gain plug-in at the end of your chain (or the beginning if you want it to hit fx in different ways) instead, you can still benefit from maintaining the artistic decisions about when a part should be louder or quieter, but also be able to nudge faders very quickly for the final overall balance.
I'm trying to get better at mixing and I recently worked with a guy who said to never use a master fader track because it degrades the audio quality. Instead, he created a buss to use as a mix buss and then several other busses for each track. Is this true? If so, why is the audio quality of a buss different than a master fader?
I recently completed an internship at a studio and the owner engineer used master fader tracks. At my school they always tell us to create a master fader track but I notice that a lot of the time the master fader is rarely touched. So what is the purpose of the master fader if we just park it at unity?
One recurring joke which I love is whoever is MC-ing (minus the silent but deadly Decoy) lowers the faders an insane number of times and talk into the mic. It is so absurd! Then I saw this actually happening on Tower Block Dreams and makes it 1000 times funnier knowing that bit came from people actully doing it.
The album is coming out in June From the garden is on the album Headshots (brand new whip) is on there (this is the one song that I’m really excited that it made the album) 2 Kenny beats songs one of which is running from the law He had been struggling with alcohol and Xanax for a while and went into rehab and got out in 2019 He wanted the tone of the album to be more upbeat and he said most of his favorites were the slow songs and left on the cutting room floor but he still wants to do something with them. Which means that after THIB possibly a mixtape with a bunch of our missing favorite snippets hopefully. He also gave me a recipe for a salad that I will be making right now. Thanks Zay
I've seen a lot of comments and posts on this sub saying how they're "disappointed" by the single or feel like the album will be unfulfillinging because of the more up tempo tone the album is said to have. I think we should appreciate how Isaiah has grown as an artist from the last 5 years and is tapping into different sounds of hip hop that we haven't heard him on before. Personally, I like the new single with its sampled three 6 mafia beat and Zays catchy hook and I believe it will be one of the many fan favorites at his live shows, but I do have a couple gripes on the song like the transition from the hook to Duke Deuces verse and the lack of another zay verse. Whether you like the track or not, the single should be given more listens from fans as its unlike anything we've heard from Isaiah. Would the wait be worth it if we were hearing the same Isaiah from 5 years ago? What are your thoughts on the track?

So if I add a compressor and lower the overall volume of that track that the metering will reflect it? I mean the metering is not even affected by the fader itself?
Currently if you try and move a fader after doing any sort of automation, it won’t let you, it just goes straight back to where the automation is set to. How can I use the fader to instead move the entire automation line up or down?
The music ideas might make licensing it hard but maybe classical vs electronic would be broad and light-hearted enough to work.

I know I’m speaking to a very niche portion of the community with this post, but I’m wondering if anyone has upgraded the cross-fader in their DJM-900NXS2... Don’t get me wrong, the Magvel is great and has a pretty sharp curve for being a club mixer, I’m just looking for something a little bit sharper for more precise cuts.
What’s difference between adjusting the send knob opposed to putting it to 0 and adjusting the fader on the bus?
