And yes, “abolish the police” is stupid also. Anarchist societies do not work at all. I’m a leftist who wants police reform and better training for officers to de-escalate a situation rather than use deadly force. Cops are people and there are good cops as well as bad cops. But you’re a dumbass if you say all cops are bastards because you generalize all cops as racist and evil. Yes, the judicial system is broken, yes cops get away with things they shouldn’t because of that broken system and it needs to be fixed. But ACAB is a fucking stupid belief.

Apologies in advance for the incoming rant, I just really need to get this off my chest. My fiancée and I have been living in the US for 6 months now (She's Trinidadian, I'm Irish) and have been made to feel incredibly unwelcome. It is not what we thought it would be and we really want to leave.
Okay so I'm from Ireland and I've recently moved to a very left leaning part of the United States. Since I've been here I've had a ton of unpleasant interactions at social events and it's just disheartening. Most recently I was at a party and heard a girl say "if you say things like 'The Irish were slaves too' you're probably racist". My fiancée and I were stunned because growing up in Ireland I've obviously never heard someone downplay the tragedy of Irish history this way and Trinidad has a massive Irish presence so my fiancée is pretty familiar with the history as well. In school we learned about the 800 year oppression of Irish people and also the enslavement of black people too. We were taught that both of these were tragedies and they were never compared.
So I said "I'm Irish, my ancestors were indentured servants on tobacco plantations in Barbados. Does that make me racist?". Her response was that indentured servitude isn't as bad as slavery (one may be worse than the other but both suck and my point is there's no reason to compare tragedies in order to prove validity). Also let alone the numerous old signs in Boston saying" No blacks or Irish" or the age of the potato famine during which the entire fucking country was literally enslaved by England. My fiancée (who is black) was saying that it'd be hard to try to say that the Irish weren't an oppressed people too but thay didn't stop this upper-class American girl from lecturing us both on what "oppression" looks like.
The girl said "what happened to black people was so much worse than anything that happened to the Irish so it's offensive to compare them". My thinking was also that this comparison was offensive except I found it offensive because I would never compare 9/11 to the holocaust and say "The holocaust was way worse, stop whining about 9/11" No, they're both independent tragedies and one doesn't take away from the other. She said her point was that this is a white supremacist talking point and that's why it needs to be dismantled. Hi all. My very first time every posting to Reddit. Also, I’m not the best at writing stories. Anyway, here goes...
So my daughter and I, who is 5, goes to John Dory’s (Paarl) about once a week, and the staff that works there also knows us. Every time we go, she’s always playing at the play place. Every kid that comes in there, she plays with, and they always end up having a blast.
Tonight we went again, and this time there was a 10-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old girl. Then not too long after that, a 8-year-old boy joined them. Those three kids were together. My daughter started coming to me and telling me that they won’t let her play with the building blocks, and I told her that she should ask them to share, or she can wait until they done and then she can play. Not long after that, she came back again, and says they are saying she’s a baby. She comes back yet again, and says they said she can’t play with them. No reason. Then I start checking out to see what is going on, if they are mean to her. I watch her trying to play with them and get involved, but they were just ignoring her. There are these dangling ‘punching bags’ that hang from the top of the play cage. And I see the boy keeps hitting it towards her, and and she’s covering her face, so I go in there and ask the kid to stop. And she leaves to play somewhere else. Then later again, I hear her trying to talk to them and they keep shouting ‘we don’t care!’. I then proceed to call her, as they are now sitting by her, cornering her by those punching bags, swinging the bags to towards her. I tell them to please stop it as my daughter needs to leave now. Then the little boy starts rubbing his hands together, because my daughter is leaving. As if to suggest they are now happy she’s leaving. Then proceeds to leave the play cage, and the girl starts swinging the punching bags towards my daughter on her way out. I told them to please stop it and proceed to get my daughter.
Yes, the kids are white. My daughter and I are colored.
Can it be that these kids are racist? Or are they just little shits? Personally, I sensed racism. I don’t know. This whole thing just made me upset that we left there so quickly.

My parents are racists by american standards. I keep in touch with them because they're the only family I have left. I work in education with a very progressive school district that has a big culture around social justice. My partner says I am a hypocrite and can't be a supporter of social justice if I don't cut them out of my life. They almost always start a brief argument whenever I get done talking with my parents.
I don't really see it as a big deal. If anything they've stopped being as racist when they got older and have sort of adjusted to living in america. I've been to their small towns in mexico. Racism is so much worse over there. Even amongst people just as brown as they are. Nowadays they mostly say things and don't trust people based off of their looks. Plus they're the only family I've ever known and that makes it hard to just cut them out of my life.
AITA for trying to stay in touch with my parents, as flawed individuals as they might be?
