A list of puns related to "Pirates of the Caribbean (film series)"
Most are saying it's better than On Stranger Tides, but still doesn't come close to matching the original magic of the first film. The series seems to have gotten progressively worse with each new installment, so I was hoping with the extra development time (been 6 years since the last one), they could have righted the ship, especially with the talented new indie directors at the helm.
Looks like Pirates won't pose much threat to Wonder Woman next week after all.
Thoughts?
First and foremost, I'm only referring to installments 2 and 3. I have not seen 4 and 5, so I can't speak for them.
I currently have the 3rd installment, At World's End, on as I do homework. Clearly I'm not getting much homework done, but that's a story for another time. There are some moments that are very unique for a massive budgeted blockbuster distributed by Disney. The opening scene with several people getting hanged is very brave for a studio known for family films and Jack Sparrow's hallucination is deliciously bizarre. But for every unique scene, you get a long drag of political mumbo jumbo that takes a negative, and pointless, tole on the movie. Not to mention, the film feels the need to develop each and every side character, which is completely unneeded.
The same said for the 2nd installment, Dead Man's Chest. It is a fun sequel that expands the universe created in the first film, has some fun action beats, and ends with a cliffhanger that makes the third installment feel needed instead of forced. Not to mention the fantastic villain of the film, Davy Jones. He is the classic example of a new villain in a series that really amps up the suspense, and the CGI used to create him still looks great. But, much like the third, it has too much. Whether it's plot beats or characters, it is filled to the brim with nonsense.
The first is a classic blockbuster that introduced us to a wonderful world and one of Hollywood's best anti-heroes, Jack Sparrow. It may not be perfect, but it is a blast that could've been improved on with even better sequels. In my opinion, these films could've been a fun blockbuster trilogy, up there with the Back to the Future trilogy or the original Indiana Jones films, had they not caved in under their own hubris.
It's going to be rated "Arrr..."
This is an expanded version of the post I wrote two years ago, reflecting some changes in my mind regarding how the series should have gone.
With Nando v Movies's video on Fantastic Beasts, which suggests the series should have been something akin to James Bond or Indiana Jones in Potterverse than another Harry Potter story formula, I also think Pirates trilogy should have been like that too.
After the massive success of Black Pearl, Disney's kneejerk reaction was to do their own big budget trilogy in the same vein of Star Wars (before acquiring Star Wars), The Lord of the Rings, and The Matrix. A grand saga full of cliffhangers, going full darker, big character arcs, lore, worldbuilding, continuity, complex plot, serious character drama, reviving previous characters, politics, human connections, etc.
It could be done I guess. I mean Star Wars was indeed intended to be a standalone film at first, but even for A New Hope, Darth Vader was escaped, the Empire was still there, the rebels weren't completely won the war, and the ending ceremony wasn't a marriage of Han/Luke and Leia. There were enough loose ties to warrant a sequel. Black Pearl feels like a solidly standalone story that ended and tied every thread of Will's story. The only loose tie The Black Pearl showed was not on Will Turner, but on Jack Sparrow, saying "Now... bring me that horizon," announcing he is set to have a brand new adventure.
However, Dead Man's Chest brought back Will and Elizabeth again, Norrington being a villain again, the whole Bill Turner family plot, and brought Barbossa as a good guy all felt like cheap DVD direct Disney sequels, making a mess of trilogy. Pirates of the Caribbean's formula fits better as a James Bond, Indiana Jones, Lupin the Third series style of the same iconic character going in different adventures for each film.
Oh wait, the last two Pirates films try that and failed, so that does not work, right? As Jack Sparrow has been commonly pointed out as the worst part about Pirates movies after the trilogy, I see the problem is they tried to make Jack Sparrow a protagonist.
Black Pearls worked well because he was not the protagonist. It is true his character got so famous, he stole all the attention from the audience, but if you think about it, the protagonist was Will and it was his story, who

Quick stats:
USS Monitor
Length: 179ft
Speed/Power: steam, 6 knots
Guns: Two 11-inch Dahlgren guns, capable of firing solid shot or exploding shell.
Black Pearl
Length: 165ft
Speed/Power: sails and magic, exact speed unknown but very fast.
Guns: 32 twelve-pound cannons
Both crews are at peak strength and fully equipped. The Monitor's crew is aware that the Pearl is cursed, but don't know what the curse actually entails. The Pearl's crew has no knowledge of the Monitor's steam engines or exploding shells.
Could technology beat magic?

Now obviously the reception was mixed about 4 and 5 (I personally disliked four, and enjoyed five but not for it's quality so much as it's fun.) I have always been an avid fan of 'Curse of the Black Pearl' and it has been pretty much the only one I have continuously watched over the years. I consider it to be a perfect film (not the greatest film ever made, but a perfect film). While the second and third instalments are certainly not perfect, I think they are far more successful than they have any right to be.
Dead Man's Chest is quite successful in upping the ante, twice the swashbuckling and twice the weird quasi-mythology (which we were able to accept very easily thanks to execution), we kept our characters interesting whilst establishing new ones that remain memorable (in my opinion). Not only in Davy Jones but Tia Dalma, Bill Turner, and Beckett. The imagery in the film remains nearly impeccable. What the film did sacrifice was the simplicity of the first one, and perhaps some of the dignity. However, it cemented itself as being very unique in cinema at the time.
The third film, once again, manages the transition rather smoothly, everything is just made a bit more extreme, a bit more magical. And to my utmost surprise, even though I went into the film expecting it to be inferior and overlong, I instead discovered that I was not only invested, but that this had indeed become epic in scale right under my nose. I realised that if the script was good and funny, the visuals were terrific, I was invested in the characters, then what had I been complaining about? Obviously the film is quite complicated and full of side-plots, but I had no trouble keeping up with them, after all, this was an epic, some attention is required. IMHO, the final battle was not a disappointment, nor were the conclusions of the character arcs. I found myself genuinely moved by Bill Turner's relationship with his son, the sword-fight wedding ceremony in the rain was bitching, and the weird Davy Jones/Calypso melodrama was, if nothing else, cool mythology.
In short, I did not mind that it was complicated and long, because everything else made up for it. Nothing felt out of place, and overall, the fact that they managed to not only make an epic swashbuckling trilogy, but one that works, is surprising.
So if you are like me, and pretty much only watch the first one on occasion, give the whole trilogy a watch. You might be surprised

> If you thought the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise had sailed off into the wild blue yonder, think again! Disney is apparently exploring a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, and they want the Deadpool writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to handle the script.
> The five original Pirates films have made Disney somewhere around $4.5 billion over the last 14 years.
> The most recent film, 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was the second-lowest grossing installment of the series.
> The Pirates franchise needs writers who excel at conjuring up old-school, swashbuckling adventure.
> Based on the Walt Disney theme park ride of the same name, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise launched in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
> Curse of the Black Pearl was followed by sequels of extremely diminishing quality - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and the previously mentioned Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

I like quests and missions. I like fights that aren't overly violent (blood and guts are not my style). I don't want to have to wait for others to show up in order to play. My laptop has to be able to handle it.
Does anyone have ideas?
Were there even any Jewish pirates in that area?
