Has Peggy McIntosh been discussed on here?

I was watching a clip in which Robin Diangelo describes reading this at age 34 and suddenly becoming "aware" of being white.

https://psychology.umbc.edu/files/2016/10/White-Privilege_McIntosh-1989.pdf

Reading it I came to a different conclusion and one that was rather different.

In 1989 perhaps this would have made sense. This was during a time of relative economic stability and one could truly point out a lack of representation in the media, work place, etc.

In present day? It doesn't work. Especially when some of these points directly point to overall class structural problems within the US more so than it does race.

Also it's very dated. Example?

" I can go into a music shop and count on finding the music of my race represented."

Yes, that's no longer an issue. Hip-Hop actually was beginning to become commercialized and by the end of 1999? It was probably the biggest seller music wise. This is not to mention the success of Latin artists during the upcoming decade and the current success of KPop/JPop in present day.

[White Privilege] Lesson 1: Unpacking the Invisible Backpack by Peggy McIntosh (1989)

>As a white person, I realized I had been taught about racism as something which puts others at a disadvantage, but had been taught not to see one of its corollary aspects, white privilege, which puts me at an advantage...

> We usually think of privilege as being a favored state, whether earned or conferred by birth or luck. Yet some of the conditions I have described here work to systematically overempower certain groups. Such privilege simply confers dominance because of one’s race or sex.

#CHECK YOUR PRIVILEGE DINKS LOLOLOL

Now that we got that HILARIOUS joke out of the way, let's begin my series on white privilege.

First, read this great (short!) essay by Peggy McIntosh. Primarily known as a feminist advocate (with a focus on male privilege), she wrote this essay to examine the way she benefits from privilege in her own life.

https://www.uakron.edu/dotAsset/1662103.pdf

In the case you didn't read the essay, I will summarize for you, you big baby (seriously, read it).

  • People with white skin are born into innumerable privileges.

  • People with white skin are not raised to be aware of said privileges.

  • A careful examination of your life will lead to the discovery of privileges in even the most mundane part of your life.

  • Just by the nature of being white, you benefit from the privileges that the institution of racism provides, EVEN IF YOU YOURSELF ARE NOT RACIST

McIntosh also points out privilege exists for other "dominant" groups: men, straight people, Protestants, etc. She acknowledges that people of privilege are taught to hold on to such privileges because they're neat for the privileged people.

> Disapproving of the systems won’t be enough to change them. I was taught to think that racism could end if white individuals changed their attitudes. [But] a β€œwhite” skin in the United States opens many doors for whites whether or not we approve of the way dominance has been conferred on us. Individual acts can palliate, but cannot end, these problems. > > To redesign social systems we need first to acknowledge their colossal unseen dimensions. The silences and denials surrounding privilege are the key political tool here. They keep the thinking about equality or equity incomplete, protecting unearned advantage and conferred dominance by making these taboo subjects. Most talk by whites about equal opportunity seems to me now to be about equal opportunity to try to get into

An Exploration of Religious Privilege in America

There was an article I read not too long ago called β€œWhite Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” which did well to explore the concepts of white privilege and indeed racial privilege in general. While in school for my masters, I have taken a number of classes on multiculturalism, religion and read a few texts on the subject. By now I have (at least I hope) grasped a basic understanding on how religion impacts culture, forms identity and shares parallels with other types of prejudice. Group psychology being what it is, human beings are subject to various mental shortcuts, and us-and-them types of thinking. This includes my own group: Satanists. However, as higher functioning animals on Earth, and in accordance to my own Tenet V, we should strive to conform our beliefs to our best scientific understanding of the world, and not the other way around.

During the original article written by Peggy McIntosh in 1988, she explored racial privilege from the viewpoint of the status quo. We can infer then that privilege in all its forms has at least some overlap. There are certain unignorable connections to race and religion, such as inferences about religion based on skin color, or visa versa. Most of the conditions outlined below are from a first person perspective seen from a representative of the status quo, in this case one of the many forms that Judeo-Christianity can take. It outlines or highlights what advantages a member of the religious majority may enjoy in any given population:

  1. I can if I wish arrange to be in the company of people of my religion most of the time.
  2. If I should need to move, I can be pretty sure of renting or purchasing housing in an area, which I can afford and in which I would want to live.
  3. I can be pretty sure that my neighbors in such a location will be neutral or pleasant to me.
  4. I can go shopping alone most of the time, pretty well assured that I will not be followed or harassed.
  5. I can turn on the television or open to the front page of the paper and see people of my religion widely represented.
  6. When I am told about our national heritage or about β€œcivilization,” I am shown that people of my religion made it what it is.
  7. I can be sure that my children will be given curricular materials that testify to the accomplishments of people of my religion
  8. If I want to, I can be pretty sure of finding a publisher for a written piece on my religion.

RHONY ep 3, please read.

Firstly, I want to make clear that this is NOT a discussion about politics or religion. It is a discussion about HUMAN RIGHTS.

RHONY has always been my favorite franchise. However, in one of the most diverse cities in the world, they have only portrayed white women, and that has been a turnoff for many watchers. I was so excited to see Eboni (a smart, funny, outspoken, an extremely intelligent woman) be given an apple. We have all had our ups and downs with the OGs, but their lack of awareness towards incredibly important social issues is astonishing. With Eboni's addition to the cast, the blatant ignorance displayed by some of the women has been clear, Their behavior IS NOT OK, and I believe it is time for a serious shake-up in the cast if this show wants to go forward.

I will finish with this, and I hope you all read it because it comes from a vulnerable place and serious self-growth – As someone who grew up in South America, in a family that displayed no racism whatsoever, I had to learn later in life how my beliefs and behaviors were still racist, or at least contributed to systemic racism. Over the past few years, I had to reflect and learn about how I am still ignorant to other's pains, especially those experienced by black women. It is not a black woman's job to teach white woman about racism. It is our job to learn about this human rights issue in order to be allies in the best way possible.

And if you are interested, please google "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh." This article opened my eyes in a tremendous way. I hope you guys read it and maybe learn from it as much as I have.

A Journey Through Critical Race Theory with Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic, pt. 3

In part 1, we discussed several things, including but not limited to CRT’s origins, its most common set of beliefs, and the inherent difficult in separating theory from activism in this field.

In part 2, we discussed a few hallmark themes of CRT, such as structural determinism and criticism of liberalism, along with the ideas of legal storytelling and narrative analysis.

Let’s look at chapters 4 and 5 this time.

##Chapter 4 - Looking Inward

We start with another famous SJ word – Intersectionality. Most are probably familiar with this term, but a reminder of the definition according to the authors would be useful.

> the examination of race, sex, class, national origin, and sexual orientation and how their combination plays out in various settings. These categoriesβ€”and still othersβ€”can be separate disadvantaging factors.

Now, the archetypal example I have heard over many years as to why Intersectionality provides a necessary insight is a black woman, oppressed for her race and sex in combination. The authors construct the following example, which I’m paraphrasing:

Suppose a black woman is discriminated against by her boss. She wants to sue for discrimination but finds that her options are harder than they appear. If she sues for racial discrimination, she knows her boss would point to the several black men who also work for him who report no issue. If she sues for sex discrimination, there are several white women employed there who would argue otherwise. Thus, her attributes interact to create a new oppression that cannot be necessarily broken down into components of race and sex.

Categories like race, sex, sexual orientation, etc. are broad and helpful for addressing the needs of people who differ from the mainstream by one axis (black cis male, cis white woman, etc.), but subgroups can and do find it frustrating that their issues, affecting a necessarily smaller number of people, go unignored by such a focus on broad/big-tent issues.

Of course, this is assuming that there’s even a reason for people oppressed in different ways to come together. The essentialism/antiessentialism question is precisely about whether oppressed people have something in common, other than the obvious and somewhat facetious answer of being oppressed. As the authors put

Solar cycle 25 has the potential for something no one is talking about

Two scientists have been putting together an idea at the University of Maryland, they released a paper in December 2020 that looked at over 270 years of sunspot data. Our sun has vast bands of magnetism emanating from the northern and southern poles. When oppositely charged bands collide at the equator, it's called a Terminator Event, kickstarting the next solar cycle. The interval between terminators varies from 10 to 15 years and is key to predicting the next cycle. The longer time between terminators, the weaker the next cycle, the shorter amount of time between terminators, the stronger the next cycle. We are now in the midst of a terminator event at only 10 years since the last, previous solar cycles with such short intervals have been among the strongest in recorded history.

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11207-020-01723-y

https://spaceweatherarchive.com/2021/06/11/the-termination-event/

41,400 years ago the Laschamp Event occurred, a geomagnetic excursion where the magnetic fields of earth reversed. The reversal lasted for approximately 440 years with the transition occurring over the course of 250 years. The reversed field was 75% weaker than today's current field, but during the transition it dropped as low as 5% it's current strength. This resulted in more cosmic rays reaching the earth, making it easy to identify cosmogenic isotopes, ozone levels decreased and atmospheric circulation changed. The loss of the geomagnetic shield possibly caused the extinction of megafauna, the extinction of the Neanderthals and the appearance of cave art. The magnetic excursion has since been demonstrated in geological archives from many parts of the world, even though there is debate on the cause of the extinctions.

Our geomagnetic north pole has moved approximately 1000km in the past 20 years, in the 20 years prior it moved less than 500km, it is accelerating at a rapid pace. From the end of World War 2 up until the mid 70's, it was a meandering leisurely line. Starting in the mid 70's it began picking up pace, heading across the arctic, out of northern Canada. The south pole on the other hand has moved approximately 600km over the past 100 years. Our magnetic fields are shifting.

Do people consider McIntosh to be overpriced?

Hello all,

I've seen people in and out of the McIntosh camps throughout the years, I know they retain value very well, but are people overvaluing them?

I'm not familiar with the "McIntosh sound" if they do indeed color the sound in a specific way. I've always kind of considered them "boutique" audiophile gear. Something that the Styxx guitarist has in his second home when he has guests over to entertain, or used in the background of movies to insinuate their wealth and good taste lol.

What is your experience with the brand? (this isn't purchase advice not sure why everything gets flagged as that and removed, its kind of annoying. )

I've seen other "boutique" stuff before but it all seems to be limited number, McIntosh seems to be the "mass produced boutique" stuff.

Missing McIntosh County Teen Confirmed To Be Son Of Woman Who Disappeared 5 Years Ago

MCINTOSH CO., Okla. - News On 6 has confirmed with family members that 13-year-old Ethan McIntosh, who disappeared Monday night in McIntosh County, is the son of a woman who has been missing more than five years.

Peggy McGuire disappeared from the same area in Stidham back in November of 2015.

Investigators told us then, that the last time anyone saw McGuire was when she was dropping off her son at school. Neighbors said it was like she vanished into thin air

Sheriff's deputies said they found McGuire's truck parked at TJ's Ice House west of Eufaula shortly after she disappeared. They said a surveillance camera captured someone driving McGuire's truck into the parking lot and then walking away.

Peggy still has not been found.

Family members told News On 6 they are helping in the search for Ethan and are hopeful someone will find him safely soon.

Thank you for this subreddit

To the creators and members of this subreddit, thank you.

This post is going to be a bit of a rant. And a long one at that.

Before I found this place, I felt like I could not have any civil discussion about the complex and nuanced nature of lolicon and shotacon pornography. Almost every post I viewed on Reddit that attempted to have civil discussions about this topic had either very mixed opinions in the comments or they were just downvoted like crazy.

This even happened to me whenever I made a post about losing a somewhat close friend over a loli/shota argument on a subreddit called r/amiwrong. Here is a link to the post I made. I tried to post this on r/AmItheAsshole, but it got removed because I was β€œdiscussing pedophilia'', apparently. These aren't the exact words r/AmItheAsshole used, but it is a similar phrasing. I'm sorry that I can’t show you the original message. I deleted it. I also posted this topic to this subreddit if you want to know all about the drama of my friend leaving me over our difference in opinion on this subject.

Once I found this place, I felt like I could discuss any topics involving the moral dilemmas of fictional media and fictional characters. It was a nice change of perspective considering what I have experienced before on Reddit. Some of what I have seen on this site is extremely disappointing. I have seen so many β€œhate/ cringe” subreddits like r/cringetopea, r/justneckbeardthings, r/animecirclejerk, r/animehate, r/NoAnimePolice, r/TooManyWeebs, r/TikTokCringe, r/yiffinhell, r/yiffinheck among many other β€œhate/ cringe” subreddits that have so many people being rude to anyone who has a hobby that is weird or odd but doesn't harm anyone. It is sickening how some people will treat others just because they are different from the average person. Even though what they do or care about doesn't harm anyone.

The types of people that aggravate me the most with this subject are people like [Vaush](https://www.youtube.com/channe

2022 NFL Draft Prospects: Georgia Bulldogs

What a season for Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs. UGA finished the 2021 with a perfect 12-0 regular season, then started 2022 with a national championship win over Alabama, getting revenge over the SEC Championship game.

What’s absolutely mind blowing to me is how many β€œpotential” 2022 draft prospects this team has. Here is a list of starters/impact players that I identified that could declare due to their eligibility:

-QB JT Daniels -QB Stetson Bennett (lol..but maybe??) -RB Zamir White -RB James Cook -RB Kenny McIntosh -WR George Pickens -OL Jamaree Salyer -OL Justin Shaffer -OT Warren McClendon -DE Travon Walker -DT Jordan Davis -DT Devonte Wyatt -Edge/LB Robert Beal -LB Nakobe Dean -LB Quay Walker -Edge/LB Nolan Smith -LB Channing Tindall -CB Ameer Speed -CB Derion Kendrick -S Lewis Cine

I’m not exaggerating: almost every single one of these guys looks NFL material RIGHT NOW. One name in particular that I haven’t seen brought up enough in the 2022 draft cycle is Nolan Smith. He’s a junior who does have additional eligibility available, however after his strong performance last night against Bama I’m almost certain he’d be a Top 5 - 10 pass rusher in this years deep class, especially with his screaming potential as a former #1 ranked player.

Is this one of the deepest classes from one team of all time? Obviously 2001 Miami gets most of the hype for this kind of debate in hindsight, but I’m honestly shocked at how much NFL talent Georgia has available THIS YEAR alone.

Updated RB Rankings

2022 NFL DRAFT RB Rankings

  1. Breece Hall (Iowa St) 6’1” 215 LBS.

Hall led the nation in rushing yards in 2020. He has good vision and the speed to break off big runs. He is a smooth runner that can change directions and make defenders miss, while also being physical and breaking tackles. Does a good job in the red zone and short-yardage situations using his athletic ability and length to jump over the line.

2021 Stats: 235 ATT – 1,230 RUSH YDS – 17 RUSH TD

  1. Rachaad White (Arizona State) 6’2” 210 LBS.

Despite only 4 games a year ago White averaged 143 total yards per game in 2020. He can run by you or over you. He has picked up right where he left off a season ago. Leads the team in receptions with 40 thus far in 2021. He is a three down back and one of the best pass catchers in this running back class.

2021 Stats: 161 ATT – 908 RUSH YDS – 14 RUSH TD

  1. Kenneth Walker (Michigan State) 5’10” 210 LBS.

The Wake Forest transfer has been the most dominant back in college football so far this season. He shows good quickness and makes defenders miss with the speed to take it to the house. His best quality is his abilty to get yards after contact. Very well might be the top back off the board if he decides to come out, still could improve as a receiver.

2021 Stats: 233 – 1,498 RUSH YDS – 17 RUSH TD

  1. Isiah Spiller (Texas A&M) 6’1” 220 LBS.

Spiller emerged as a freshman and came back even stronger as a sophomore. He has very good vision and makes decisive cuts. Trying to tackle him is a task as he possesses good contact balance and enough speed to break off some big runs.

2021 Stats: 168 ATT – 984 RUSH YDS – 6 RUSH TD

  1. Brian Robinson (Alabama) 6’1” 228 LBS.

Robinson has taken advantage of being the top guy after 1st round draft choice Najee Harris departed for the NFL. Alabama offensive line this year is substandard compared to the past couple of years and despite that Robinson has played very well. He shows good vision with excellent acceleration to get up to top speed fast. A hard runner with really good balance, and is a tough running back to bring down.

2021 Stats: 191 ATT – 945 RUSH YDS – 6 RUSH TD

  1. Kyren Williams (Notre Dame) 5’9” 185 LBS

Williams exploded onto the scene last year as a sophomore. Could be the most complete back in the draft. Does a good job picking up the blitz, can line up in the slot and, catch it out of the backfield. Williams is having a good year despite some of the offensive line woes of Notre Dame.

My Concept For "The Dark Pictures Anthology: Silence In The Library"

Setting -

Barnsaby, North Carolina, 1960: A town once destined for economic prosperity was abandoned in its infancy when the mining and logging in the nearby area dissipated thanks to the Great Depression. The town planner of Barnsaby, millionaire and occultism aficionado, Arnold Saxton, counted his chickens before they hatched, and the first and only building who's construction was completed was the main building for the planned but never finished Armiston University, of which Saxton had planned to be the headmaster. The Saxton Library building is no ordinary library, it's a massive, sprawling building with multiple wings, featuring a museum, a cafeteria, several lecture halls, a model factory floor to train students to work in automobile factories, an upper floor for the faculty and headmaster's office, and the centerpiece of it all, the Saxton Library, a cavernous maze of bookshelves over 35 feet tall, all lined with books that were deemed too expensive to recover when the town was abandoned.

Characters -

Simon Farnsworth: A nerdy university student from Huxtable College, a few towns over. Doing his PhD dissertation on North American pagan occultism. Nervous/Capable/Intelligent

Jonah Murray: An atheltic university student from Huxtable College. Failing his Anthropology 101 class, he's agreed to help Simon and Professor McIntosh in exchange for extra credit. Brash/Protective/Kindhearted

Professor Samuel McIntosh, PhD (voiced by Bryan Cranston): Simon and Jonah's professor. Though he's Simon's professor, he's letting him take the lead on this expedition. Calm-headed/Logical/Indecisive

Susan Montaire: A photography student at Huxtable College, she joins the crew to document the trip in the hopes that photos from inside the library will kickstart her career, which matters more to her than anything else in the world. Headstrong/Determined/Reserved

Desdemona Lang: Born in 1916, 18 year old Desdemona is in over her head when she wakes up in the library in 1960. Scared/Motivated/Naive

Creatures -

The Librarian: A tall, chitinious creature. It has legs 30 feet long, and on top of them a six foot long, pod-like body with two sharp appendages that reach down to the ground. Despite its large stature, its footsteps are not much louder than a human's as it tramples along the carpeted library floors, listening for its prey.

The Scarperer: A chittering, centipede-like monster, 3 feet long, that inhabits the cafeteria. It h

20K Budget - Where Do I Start?

I saw in another post it’s β€œno stupid questions weekend.” I feel like I have plenty.

My current equipment is 15 ish years old. The core of the system is a Pioneer Elite VSX-94TX and a still-great-to-me Panasonic plasma tv. I still have a Pioneer laserdisc player in my rack…

There was a time during my late 20s/early 30s that I was hugely into HT. I’m now 52. I really haven’t kept up. Help teach this old dog new tricks. Where do I start with my 20k budget? How should I think about allocating my spend for a completely new system? I know I’m not looking for in-wall or in-ceiling speakers. This isn’t a construction project. I have a dedicated room that doubles as a listening room (outfitted with a 70s McIntosh, vintage JBLs and an 80s Thorens record player). The listening portion is staying.

Appreciate this subs’ input. Thank you!

Opinions on Bowers and Wilkins?

Hello all,

About to pick up a McIntosh MA252 amp (I'm excited) and am looking for new speakers. I've considered buying the Bowers and Wilkins 705 Signature, but am getting some mixed feedback from two different camps on B&W. What is your guys' opinion of these speakers and the brand as a whole? People call them "bright" but I just hear clarity. I really enjoy airy highs and REALLY ambient music (think Thom Brennan, Blank Embrace, Biosphere, etc) so clarity is important to me, as I like to be taken away by the synths and really MELT into the sound.

Why does everyone hate on B&W? Is it just because they are made in China (so are Wharfdales) or because they are sold in Big Box stores? Is the hate validated somehow, or is it just because it isn't "exotic" enough for "audiophiles"? They are $4k speakers and seem to sound ok, am I missing something? Some horror story I should know about?

Please give me some feedback and let me know your opinion on these speakers and this brand

Draft Discussion

With James Cook declaring for the Draft this morning, thought it would be interesting to look at who else we could lose. Lets leave possible transfers out for this discussion.

Accepted Senior Bowl invite: (almost certainly gone) James Cook, Jamaree Salyer, Justin Shaffer, Devonte Wyatt, Channing Tindall, Quay Walker, Derion Kendrick, Jake Camarda

Other (relevant) Seniors: Christopher Smith, William Poole, Robert Beal Jr., Latavious Brini, Julian Rochester, Jordan Davis

Juniors that could reasonably leave early: George Pickens, Zamir White, Nolan Smith, Kenny McIntosh, Kearis Jackson, Lewis Cine, Nakobe Dean, JT Daniels, Tykee Smith, Travon Walker, Warren Ericson, John Fitzpatrick, Jack Podlesny

Almost everyone here (except Rochester I think) could technically come back... who do we think stays?

I’m an audio newbie that got gifted an old speaker system recently and I’d love learn more.

Hey y’all basically title but I was gifted 2 McIntosh LS310 speakers, McIntosh HT-4 speaker, as well as a Paradigm PS Series Hybrid Output/ Highcurrent Subwoofer Amplifier. Again absolute newb when it comes to audio systems so I am quite dumbfounded with what I should do with this equipment. I’d love to use them for music and I wanted to see what y’all thought in terms of application. I could go to any audio shop (USA) and ask but again, I’m at square one in terms of education and I didnt what to be swindled into buying something I don’t need.

EDIT: The Paradigm is a model PS-1000

Just got a Purifi Eval1 amp put together.... me oh my!!

I'm in the process of building my 2.0 into a 5.1.2 home theater one step at a time. The TV was first and now I'm working my way through the audio. The first audio addition is the Purifi Eval 1 class D kit amp (400 W/ch into 4 Ohms). I've had a McIntosh MC7270 for over 30 years. For most of that time they've driven a pair of Polk 5th Gen SDA SRS's. Say what you will about McIntosh & Polk but I've always been satisfied with that combination. I must say though that I liked the K-horns I had before better. I never would have thought that a different amplifier could make such a positive difference as the Purifi Eval 1 kit has. I don't have the ears or disposition to give a long & flowery critique with all the vague, nebulous but highly technical-sounding terms of the audiophile world but I'm quite impressed nonetheless. The electrical engineer in me says that the difference is most likely due to the low output impedance of the Eval1 kit as that reduces interaction between the amp and speakers - another way of saying that the amp gets out of the way and doesn't color the outcome, it just passes the joy straight through.

The most notable difference is in the bass range. I can't say I can tell the difference in the midrange and high end - they both sound good to me. The Eval 1 kit just doesn't seem to care what the load does. The speakers just get manhandled all the way up to the power supply's voltage limit. When I was using my McIntosh amp, I had the loudness, bass tone control and several of the lower sliders of an EQ boosting the low frequencies and it still wasn't anything like the Eval 1 with flat tone controls.

From a specs perspective, I don't believe the differences in THD+N, frequency response range or flatness or TIM account for a whit of difference in almost any high-end amp. They pretty much all have specs that are well within the limits of human discernability. IMO - and it is just that, an opinion - the differences arise from effects that are most easily observed in the square wave response and how heavily influenced the amp is influenced by the load. To my simple minded view of this subject, low output impedance is the most beneficial characteristic but a high slew-rate capability is also important.

If you have a chance to listen to or own one of these class-d amps, I highly recommend it.
