Such people have the power to vote in our country now.

I’m Indian, and until recently, I was unaware that the word was considered by many to be derogatory towards all desis/south asians. For a while, I thought of it literally, as in Pakistanis. I’ve never taken offense to it, although I’ve never been called that or heard it used irl. I don’t think it’s commonly used here in the US. Wondering what your thoughts are.

I’m not really sure where to post this. I just really need other people’s opinion.

Ye I know this is stupid. I know it is a slur. But I’m arguing with someone and he is adamant that “paki” is not a bad word to say. It’s just “what they’ve always been called”. And he thinks that South Asian people won’t even get offended when you say it to their face.

So dear South Asian people who lives in a majority white country, how do you actually feel being called “Paki” infront of you and/or behind your back?

I’m just tired of arguing with this person about slurs lol.

Paki meaning Pakistani, Aussie meaning Australian, however one is considered Ok to say and one isn’t.

I was reading that some people got banned from twitter for being rude to TERFs. This makes no sense, because TERF is just an easier way of typing out/ saying Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. It got me thinking, why is Jap and Paki shouldn't be slurs. It 's just a shorter way of saying Japanese and Pakistani respectively.

I (27 female) and my boyfriend (27 male) both live in Canada now, but I grew up in the US. We were talking recently and I shared that when I went to Kentucky for an academic competition in high school, I was walking down the street with a friend when randomly a white man across the road on the opposite sidewalk yelled “something something get out paki” at me (I am Indian and my friend was Ethiopian so had to be directed at me). My boyfriend responded with “are you sure you didn’t do something? People don’t just yell at other people on the street”.

I think he should apologize or at least acknowledge that he shouldn’t have said that because A) he admits I’m an honest person and don’t lie often nor do I have any reason/incentive for making this up B) I asked him what he thought I could have done to justify that treatment and he said nothing could justify it really but he still didn’t think someone would just do that C) it’s extremely invalidating for him to doubt me when he has no reason why I would lie, no reason to believe I’m a liar, and no reason to support why he thinks this is not possible

He thinks he doesn’t need to apologize and that he didn’t do anything wrong nor does he need to retract his statement and respond differently.

I think he should apologize because I’m hurt by his statement.

• The suffix -stan means "land of the..."; If "Afghanistan" means "land of the Afghans", surely "Pakistan" means "Land of the Paks"?

• The demonym for all other -stan countries are the country name, sans "stan"; Afghan, Uzbek, etc.

• So?

I had a black friend over last night who has ib the past, and last night, used the slur 'paki' in reference to Asian people. It had bothered me before and I asked him not to use it last night, not only because I don't like it but also because my SO(who's also black)'s sisters are half Asian. He did drop it but not before trying to argue that he has a half Asian sister too, and seemed to think that because he's black and he and my SO often say 'nigga' casually it was ok for him to say 'paki'. I strongly disagree, as does my SO, and was wondering what your take on it is.

In a text, instead of writing the words he's from Pakistan I think, I basically put "he's paki I think". Is this racist, if it is, I'll never say it again, but I didn't know if it's ok to use it in a non racist term. If you couldn't work it out, I'm white. I would like to add I didn't mean this is a racist way, just a way to shorten the sentence

I was born and raised in Sweden by Bengali parents. Where I grew up it was majority ethnic Swedes but there were also minorities as well, maybe 10-15%. I would sometimes get called different slurs by both Swedes and other minorities. It didn't happen often but it did happen sometimes. It was mostly the Arabs and Syriacs that called me things like zingi (basically the N-word in Arabic), come/como (N-word in Syriac) and the Swedes would sometimes say neger (N-word in Swedish). Like I already said, slurs were used way more by the Arabs, Syriacs and other minorities in general then than by the Swedes.

The Arabs, Syriacs and sometimes even Africans calls Desi people Ghandi in a negative way. How the fuck can you use Ghandi as an insult? It never made any damn sense to me. I was called that quite a fews times growing up but I never took it as an insult even though it was meant as one. Super weird shit.

i’ve heard of bi people getting canceled for this, and i think that’s wrong, because a bisexual man walking down the street with a male-presenting partner, showing any public signs of affection like kissing or hand-holding, is just as at risk of a homophobic slur as a gay man doing the same thing. so what do you all think?
