The Imperial Harem of the Ottoman Empire

https://preview.redd.it/b4ok56sa4cg21.jpg?width=711&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1326bb1fe7126d0bfac61b4f9a2bc263b22eea5

Most people know the existence of Harems. Even locals think that it was a gathering of beautiful slaves dancing around and doing prostitution.

Well it was not.

Slaves were gathered from all over. Boys at 5-10 years old, girls around 10 years old, nothing much older than that. For the boys there was a rule where 1 boy from every 5th house, and that boy can not be only healthy son of his family, and family gets money for giving their son.

https://preview.redd.it/1u6zm2vc4cg21.jpg?width=977&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=baf44baf1a6bbfa4e345628cf1841ce01528abfd

Government gave boys to Muslim families to make them learn Ottoman culture and religion. And when they reach 14-15 they were gathered and sent to military school .

The ones with high intelligence spotted there were sent to receive higher education, to become government employees. Most high governors were former slave boys. They ruled the empire along with the Sultan.

https://preview.redd.it/crprwuoe4cg21.jpg?width=899&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74b513949632d2955fdeeb2cacb02fd94f930ccc

Meanwhile, the girls were being taken to the harem. Only women and eunuchs were allowed; no men were allowed, not even the Sultan. Eunuch soldiers kept the harem safe.

10-13 year old girls received Islamic, political, scientific education, getting them ready for their future careers.

https://preview.redd.it/020p9bpi4cg21.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=228d5ce846b9686e998508599e16940cfaabe412

After they were 17 and had enough education, a few were being chosen to be the Sultan's concubine by the Sultan's mother, the others would marry governors around the empire.

https://preview.redd.it/ivcv23ik4cg21.jpg?width=343&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b7b8917d54243cf1c29ddbb84b8a60ed113fccc

The reason they were getting education was that when they married a governor they would become the leader of all women in that governance. Most charity works, city investments have been done by these ladies.

Do we have records of harem life from members of the Imperial Ottoman harem, and what do they tell us about interpersonal relationships between the women?

More specifically, I'm wondering about the depiction of fierce rivalry and consuming focus on winning the sultan's attention in the Turkish drama Magnificent Century. Are there primary sources that give a real insight into how these women felt about their position and their fellow concubines?

(Due to Empresses in the Palace, I also have an interest in similar information regarding Qing dynasty China.)

[Tower of the Wandering Cloud] Hierachy of the Imperial Harem of the Kingdom of LΔ©nh Nam.

Kingdom of LΔ©nh Nam is a large, multi-race feudalistic monarchy ruled by Demon Sovereign XΖ°Ζ‘ng Cuα»“ng (ηŒ–η‹‚), a holy-turned-demonic world tree. The country is divided into 10 Δ‘αΊ‘o (military regions) with a total of 35 lα»™ (provinces) inside. There are lots of vassals, almost similar to China during the Western Zhou dynasty, but these vassals have less political and military powers comparing to the capital Phong Đô. To maintain the absolute power, beside conventional political, economical and military methods, XΖ°Ζ‘ng Cuα»“ng also engaged in various political marriages himself, resulted in a harem of over hundreds of beauties. This harem resides within the Inner Palace, a place that's similar to a miniature version of LΔ©nh Nam with all the political and faction shenanigans.

Like every other structure, the Imperial Harem has its own hierachy. Not counting XΖ°Ζ‘ng Cuα»“ng himself, who is the supreme ruler (still get his ass wooped by General VΓ’n Du, the Machioness of Cα»u ChΓ’n anyway), the hierachy is like below.

  1. HoΓ ng hαΊu (ηš‡εŽ, Empress) is the highest-ranking wife of XΖ°Ζ‘ng Cuα»“ng. The Empress is the de facto ruler of the Harem and Inner Palace as a whole, able to judge people and order others to do as she pleases. The current Empress is Her Holy-Majesty Ngọc CΖ‘, a descendant from Shennong bloodline. This gives XΖ°Ζ‘ng Cuα»“ng a connection to the Shennong Clan, a powerful clan of primodial deities and spirits.
  2. QuΓ½ phi (貴妃, Honorable Concubines) are the second highest wives and highest among concubines, only below the Empress. Their official titles are Her Honorable Highness. Currently there are 5 Honorable Concubines, which fit the Five Elements belief. They all come from influential clans, mostly high0ranking officials and strong warlords.
  3. Phi (妃, Concubine) is the title that both serves as the catch-all phrase for those that are not the Empress but still officially XΖ°Ζ‘ng Cuα»“ng's wives and a specific rank. They are at the middle of ladies, have their own palaces but the political power is limited to their own factions. Only concubines and higher can form factions.
  4. TαΊ§n (ε¬ͺ, Ladies) are lowest official wives. They stay in separate rooms in large palaces, have minimal servants and are seen as "commoners" in the eyes of higher concubines. Ladies usually come from wealthy but otherwise standard families, aka commoners, thus they are used to being looked down upon.
  5. NΖ°Ζ‘ng (ε¬’, Mistress) are apprentice concubines around 14-17 year

As the title says, every State I can think of has engaged in Imperialism, if they were powerful enough. For example, the Ottomans were Imperial powers, as were the Japanese. Why then does it seem that "Imperialism" is only ever mentioned in relation to western countries? Is it because European, and to a lesser extent American Imperialism, is more recent? Or is it because people think Western Imperialism is worse?
