A list of puns related to "Osmium tetroxide"
I am researching it for a personal writing project of a horror novel where it is used to kill one of the main characters in a trap (I know osmium is very rare but the main villain is a jackass millionaire who wants to flex on them). I am very confused on how the substance is activated because I keep getting conflicting information online. Some sources say it is made when Osmium is heated then exposed to air while others say itβs osmium in a powdered form and exposed to air and a bunch of their ways. Whatβs the actual way???? If itβs the heating way is their a certain temperature? Is it when it becomes a liquid or does the solid piece of osmium release a gas when it makes contact with the air at that temperature? If itβs powered is their a certain quality the flakes need to be? How fine do they need to be smashed to? Does it need to be pure osmium for it to get itβs killing effect or what percentage is the ratio of osmium and other materials mixed with its non pure form for it to work? Sorry if this is long and ranty Iβm just really frustrated since I have been researching for a good 2 hours, if theirs some additional fun facts about it please tell me I really want this to be as accurate as possible lol. Thank you for reading :D
Is it possible to fix animal tissues for SEM using something less dangerous than osmium tetroxide?
According to all the information I can find, including some chemistry text-books and "processing guideline" manuals, bulk Osmium is considered generally safe, because it does not produce toxic osmium tetroxide at room temperature (only above 400C). Powdered osmium sponge, on the other hand, transforms into osmium tetroxide at room temperature.
My question is: Why does a block of osmium not constantly form a small amount of osmium tetroxide on its surface?
Osmium tetroxide can't form a protective layer on the surface, as it is a liquid (and it can evaporate), so why is oxidation not continually occurring?
I get that it has less surface area than a powder, but so does a chunk of iron vs iron powder, and iron chunks still rust, hence my confusion.
My guess: chem

Hey guys, I have been working on this project for some time with my research professor which involves oxidizing a benzene ring all the way to a carboxylic acid. We read through tons of literature and the most promising option we could find was something along the lines of Ruthenium tetroxide or Osmium tetroxide.
That being said, I'm aware of the loads of safety concerns involved with such strong oxidizers. How should I approach these safety issues? would I need a specialized fume hood or a certain respirator? These sorts of details were not included in any MSDS.
I'm just a student and I'm fascinated with ozone and osmium, so I came up with the question above.
Just curious as to why? Have yet to have been introduced to any aspect of any dangers regarding Osmium Tetroxide in class so I was just wondering.
Does anyone know of a product that doesn't ruin the surface finish, makes an item safe to handle, and is easily removed if needed (burn or dissolve)? Looking particularly at osmium beads, but wouldn't mind it for ampules as well.
Has anyone in the fountain pen community ever thought that Osmium might become a highly sought after speculative store of value in the future? Itβs arguably the rarest precious metal on earth and from a production standpoint it is by far the rarest precious metal.
Iβve never moved with elements before and the one element Iβm most worried about is osmium Iβm worried about it getting smashed somehow and it forms osmium tetroxide so how do I move the elements from one house to the new one that Iβm going to be living in? I put them in a wooden shelf with no door because thatβs just what I bought so I do I keep them safe do I just handle it like any other fragile object which is to put bubble wrap or packing peanuts in the box and load it up or is there a different way?
since Osmium powder forms Osmium tetroxide powdered and my osmium sample is 0.15 grams is this oxide gonna form on my sample?

Go post NSFW jokes somewhere else. If I can't tell my kids this joke, then it is not a DAD JOKE.
If you feel it's appropriate to share NSFW jokes with your kids, that's on you. But a real, true dad joke should work for anyone's kid.
Mods... If you exist... Please, stop this madness. Rule #6 should simply not allow NSFW or (wtf) NSFL tags. Also, remember that MINORS browse this subreddit too? Why put that in rule #6, then allow NSFW???
Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.
Thank you,
A Dad.
Well, toucan play at that game.
Martin Freeman, and Andy Serkis.
They also play roles in Lord of the Rings.
I guess that makes them the Tolkien white guys.

second hand stores!
Keep in mind, my son is 4 years old, so everything is an original to him.
I had to work late into the evening yesterday, and he was just going to bed when I got home. I had left home for the office nearly 14 hours prior, had a long day, lots of meetings, traffic, etc.
When I walked through the door, I was exhausted, run down, and starving. My wife hugged me and asked how my day was, and I replied, "Done. It was a good day, but has got me exhausted. I just want to grab a bite and go to bed. I'm hungry."
From my son's bedroom, I hear him shout, "Hi Hungry! Nice to meet you!"
Not only did it make me laugh, but I completely forgot about how hungry and tired I was. I went to his bedroom, and we laughed together about it. It was exactly what I needed.
Edit: Thanks for all the awards, kind strangers! I'll let my son know y'all enjoyed his joke too!
