A list of puns related to "Oryx and Crake"
I was loving the book at first. I really loved when Snowman was reflecting on his past. His childhood fascinated me.
However, Iβm pretty disturbed after reading about Jimmy and Crake watching child porn. Iβm even more disturbed that Snowman fantasizes about the woman he first saw in CP. Itβs just not what I expected when I picked up this βlove storyβ.
I know that Margaret Atwood is no stranger to writing uncomfortable material. I just really dislike all of the characters now. Itβs hard to enjoy a book when I canβt really sympathize with anyone.
There were such good reviews, so maybe thereβs something Iβm missing. Is it worth finishing?
It's something that I've been thinking about it. I think it's a question that seems more valid than ever given the recent interest in climate change and the negative impact of human beings on the planet.
In a world where things don't seem to be changing for the better, do you think that the sudden end of the human race would be the best thing? I have to say that I empathize with Crake's decision to engineer humankind's swift end by manipulating them through consumerism, greed and libidinal impulses.
I have to pick a book that has similar themes to Oryx and crake. My top Options are Farenheit 451, 1984, handmaid's tale, brave new world, the road, bodily harm, nostalgia, the island of dr moreau and never let me go.
Which one of these relates to Oryx and crake the most? Also if theres any other books that have similiar themes to Oryx and crake?
I absolutely loved the world and characters! Biology is one of my favorite subjects, and Atwood's genetically modified earth was so cool too me. The Children of Crake especially were a pleasure to read about; I love the changes that Crake made to them, and I'm so glad they had a good ending (and that humanity didn't lol). Honestly, if I had about 200 more IQ points, I would do what Crake did to humanity.
Jimmy/Snowman, Crake, and Oryx were such amazing and warped characters (now that is how to do a love triangle lol). I wish we got more of Oryx though, but I guess the mystery is part of her character's charm. We mostly got the worse parts of her life (although to her it wasn't even bad, which is one of the reasons her story is so fucked up and fascinating), and then we got to see her again when she was older, but didn't really know what went on in her head - not to mention if that even was the same girl that was sex trafficked that Jimmy and Crake saw on the site; she denies it to Jimmy, and even though she is more than likely lying, maybe it wasn't the same girl and that's the whole point: Jimmy and Crake's desire for the girl they saw was mostly in their heads (this could be interpreting it wrong).
Jimmy/Snowman was a great protagonist. His emotionally stability is all over the place; him and Crake do all kinds of fucked up things with no remorse, yet he truly loves Oryx, Crake, and even his mom in a weird way, and really does his best to protect the Children of Crake. Both him and Crake seem like the type to not develop strong bonds - not to mention they are so different from each other - and yet they trust each other.
I have just a couple questions: Why did Crake kill Oryx and have Jimmy kill him? I think it's pretty straightforward, but I want to make sure I know. I assume he knew about Jimmy and Oryx, and that's why he killed her, and I'm assuming he wanted to kill himself because he was a haunted person and hated humanity in general and probably just wanted Jimmy and the Children of Crake to live once his plague took over.
Was Crake actually in love with Oryx? I'm kind of confused as to why him and Jimmy happened to become obsessed over the same girl. Crake never formed sexual bonds before her, and normally I would have thought that it was all a plan to manipulate Jimmy, but then there are passages that describe Crake's genuine love for Oryx, so I guess it wasn't all a game to him. Them both falling for Oryx just seemed kind of strange and i

I just finished reading Oryx and Crake and OH MY GOD it was amazing. (oh and I know this one's an oldie but I haven't read the rest of the series yet so please no major spoilers).
I thought it was so eerily familiar to our current societal climate and a brilliant speculation of what could be. Plus her insight into what it is to be human is just delicious!
Anyone else find this book as amazing as I do and if so what did you love about it? Any other book recommendations? What are some of your favorites?
We had an amazing discussion of chapters 1 and 2 and so I'm really excited to look even deeper into this book with the addition of chapters 3 and 4. These chapters were kind of an extension of 1 and 2 in a lot of ways. In 3 we get a vision of the world as it is. Jimmy is discussing what life is like and is simply trying to survive. He seems to be looking for some kind of purpose. He knows he should try to work hard towards survival, but keeps looking for more: >He could make lists. It could give his life some structure (p. 41 in my version).
However, we also get some weird sections in chapter 3 that seem to be referring to past memories.
>She smiles up at him and moves her arms gently to keep afloat, and he knows they are both in great danger. Then there's a hollow booming sound, like the door of a great vault shutting.
This memory of Oryx makes the reader wonder--what danger?
In Chapter 4 we move back to the world as it was and learn a lot about Crake, Oryx and Jimmy.
Some questions to get us started:
Why do you think Jimmy's mom left? Clearly she thought something was ethically wrong with the genetic projects. Was she right to leave? Do you think NooSkins and OrganInc take it too far? Or do you think that she reacted too strongly?
Other than the fallout between Jimmy's mother and father, Jimmy is going through some pretty typical teenage growth it seems. He feels misunderstood, annoyed by parental figures, feels lonely, feels emotional, interested in girls, interested in the opinions of others. But during all of this Jimmy meet Crake (or Glenn) who is a tad unusual. One passage I really liked was where Jimmy explains why Crake is always Crake to him, and not Crake/Glenn or anything else. This seems interesting that Jimmy thinks of any memory of Crake as distinctly Crake and that Crake was always there. This means Snowman has merged Crake and Glenn together. This is particularly interesting, because Snowman has made such a clear distinction and has tried to separate Snowman and Jimmy, this could be seen in talking about Jimmy in the 3rd person and commenting on his memories in a distant manner. Why do you think Jimmy distinguishes Jimmy/Snowman, but not Crake/Glenn?
What do you think Crake's hobbies say about him? He's interested in games like Chess, and Extinctathon, Blood and Roses, executions, and child pornography. Do you think Jimmy would have explored these things regardless? Or do you think Jimmy was profoundly influenced by

Thanks guys!
I have read several books by Margarat Atwood and I'm having a lot of trouble picking up works by other authors. Something about the way her prose flows has really captured me. I'm a huge fan of sci-fi though. So I'm at a bit of an impasse here trying to find something that will capture me. I read this book a while back and it's still one of my all time favorite books, and definitely the best in the trilogy.
Has anyone got an easier way of locating these absolute nightmares? Iβve followed the usual advice and they just donβt turn up
Hi Guys,
This is my first post, so please be understanding if there is some mistake inside.
Downy Crake and Petricanths are the creatures that we have to catch in order to complete our alcohol set (hiks).
What I got from Drownly Crake is the green alcohol and Petricanths the yellow one. (yeah im not so good with names :D)
I read that you have to respawn map at wildpire waste until the downy crake is randomly appear there, but oh boy, it such a waste of time. Actually you can just wonder around the trio Apceros there, important is that you don't see them. After walking about 15 mins, I heard a chirping sound, used my ghilie found them standing on the Apceros' back.
There is also a possibility that those bird will appear on the Ancient Forest, on the back of Aptonoth. I bet using the same tactic is also plausible.
I learnt from youtube that the best place to capture petricanths is in Rotten Vale area 15. I tried so hard and got so far...0 result.. lol, so I tried another method. Everytime I have a mission in Elder Recess, I always travel to Eastern Camp (8), on the left side of the pond (usually there is a platinum fish there), there is also a percentage that the petricanths will be summoned there.
Anyway, like all J-RPG, those rare animals only spawn when you are not looking for them.
Happy Hunting
What if to get it you had to catch it like the duffel penguin
CAN. THESE. FUCKING. THINGS. SPAWN.
I've gotten these before and back then they spawned almost instantly. Now however when I need them again to complete the delivery, they don't want to fucking ever spawn. I just lost a good two to three hours of my life constantly going in and out of expeditions and optional quests trying to get these little fuckers to spawn. If I wanted to do a mindless RNG grind like this, I'd just fucking boot up Destiny 2.
EDIT: Manage to finally get them to spawn not long into my second "farming" run
I have spent days trying to catch these tiny little bird things. I've been trying everything. Wearing the ghillie mantle crouching next to the Aptonoths in zone 1 of the Ancient Forest for hours. Doing the same with the Mantagrells in the Coral Highlands too. Tried with the camera both facing away from them, straight at the ground, and spinning it like a mad man. These stupid birds just won't bloody spawn.
That is, if I'm prepared. THRICE I have been busy with something entirely irrelevant, and I suddenly spot these chirping fuckers running by me, only to vanish the very second I reach the net. I am about to scream.
Sigh... At least I finally got a Forest Pteryx.
Edit: Bitch about it on Reddit and you will be rewarded it seems. Found them on a juvenile Aptonoth in the top left zone of the Ancient Forest, and managed to grab two of them. Finally, gaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
WTF, where have these been all my life? I built them but passed them over for soo long.
Went out to hunt a Rathian and slept him FOUR times.
Flashpod > Attack head > Fell asleep > Attack head to wakeup > Attack legs to trip > Flurry on head while tripped > Fell asleep > Repeat until dead
He didn't get a single attack in. awesome weapon xD
I was wondering: The band said the two bonus tracks from the Hunter were cut from the Crack the Skye sessions. Do you think their lyrics are also connected?
Deathbound definitely feels like it could be connected, maybe right before the Czar? Like it's maybe him bonding with Rasputin, thus why he's "Deathbound". The Ruiner could also be about the Czar himself, but that's kind of a stretch. If it was though, it might have been between Deathbound and the Czar?
And now I have to catch more for the endemic life researcher...
('PSA': for people who still need to catch one, weather doesn't seem to matter. I caught mine at night in the rain (in AF at 8). Using the strategy from this video)
I just dont know what Im doing wrong!
https://youtu.be/1W5TzzhhMUw
copied this video as much as I possibly can without getting his exact armor and sword going.
Any insight on what I might be screwing up? Spawn in, out on the ghilie mantle, head down to the bushes, wait, turn and dont look at them..... then never downy crakes.... never downy crakes.
