Ontario Scholar Puns

Alright so I just got an Ontario Scholar, and people are talking about $400, and claiming and blablabla. Can someone explain what this does, and if there is money or something, how do you redeem it?

Everyone on this planet has been affected by the SARS-Cov-2/Coronavirus/Covid-19 pandemic. You may have been in lockdown, you may have been forced to work under some form of duress, you may have lost a loved one to the disease, you may be left with long term side effects of the illness, you may have found that regular food, housing, and/or medical care is less attainable or more expensive now.

We could have been better off months ago, but disinformation and lies have been allowed to spread readily through inaction and malice, and have dragged this on at the cost of lives. There are those who deny that the pandemic even exists, there are those who think that wearing a mask will literally suffocate you, there are those who think it's no worse than a regular flu virus, that it's a bioweapon, and everything in between. This volume of blatant misinformation is problematic and dangerous.

It is clear that even after promising to tackle the problem of misinformation on this site, nothing of substance has been done aside from quarantining a medium sized subreddit, which barely reduces traffic and does little to stop misinformation.

 

The disinformation and false information is manifold. There is no area of recognised safety procedures when it comes to battling the spread of a dangerous virus that is not under attack here. All empirically proven measures which can help save lives are under attack. Masks work^1 , but not according to the propaganda. The vaccine is safe,^2 it is not untested, and it is not experimental technology or DNA manipulation, but people getting their information from these propaganda subreddits are told the opposite. Social distancing is valuable^3 , but people are being persuaded to not even do that. Cynical plays on emotion are made. Trying to keep children safe is painted as "child abuse". Lies are repeated so frequently that misinformed people begin to believe them wholeheartedly, trusting that they can't be incorrect because they're surrounded by people who believe it also.

There needs to be a more active involvement in preventing the spread of the disinformation that is keeping us within a pandemic that at this point is entirely manageable. The main problem with a concerted disinformation campaign is that such a message attains an air of legitimacy through sheer volume of repetition. This is dangerous when it comes

I’m a student at a left-leaning university in southern Ontario. I have a classmate who claims to be a Haudenosaunee woman. She has spoken of having at least two European immigrant grandparents, and possibly a third (I may have misheard her), and alternatively claims Akwesasne or Kahnawake as her home (while also claiming to have grown up in a non-indigenous town in either Norfolk or Prescott counties). She loves to talk about Haudenosaunee culture and then claim to be shocked when learning about “settler” (her favourite word) culture, despite having grown up around it.

She not only never misses an opportunity to remind everyone else that she’s native - and to express the many things that make her angry as a result of being a native woman - but indeed she rarely speaks unless she can relate it back to herself and her bottomless rage.

We recently had to read a book about women in 19th century Montreal, and by page 12 she got too angry to keep reading because it said that the dwellings in Kahnawake at this time looked “primitive” compared to Montreal. But she also managed to read 20 pages later when the book mentioned voyageurs having First Nations wives in the pays d’en haut - because a) the writer didn’t specify which nations and therefore engaged in pan-Indianism and erasure, and b) the writer said they “kept” country wives but Haudenosaunee are matriarchal so they aren’t “kept.” She proclaimed that it would’ve been better to not mention indigenous people at all than to say things that made her mad, but of course any book we’ve read that didn’t mention indigenous people also made her mad. I’m glad we were on zoom (so I was muted) and I had a mask on, being in a semi-public place, because I said “for fuck sake” aloud a few times that day.

She proceeded to claim that feminism wouldn’t exist without Haudenosaunee women because they taught Quebecois women how to stand up for themselves. Of all the outlandish claims she’s made, that one really ranks up there. She’s also claimed that the Haudenosaunee were never defeated in battle, that they invented the concept of democracy, and that Akwesasne as a community has existed since “time immemorial” (it was founded by exiles from Kahnawake in the 18th century).

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
