PREVIEW:
This Sunday afternoon Chelsea will play host to Lyon, in the second leg of our Champions League semi-final tie. Lyon have won the European Cup three years in a row, and are widely-recognised as the best club team on the continent. The 'Galacticos' of women's football can count superstars such as Ballon D'Or winner Ada Hegerberg, legendary French forward Eugenie Le Sommer, Japan captain Saki Kumagai, and England's own Lucy Bronze amongst their ranks - and are used to sweeping aside each team they face with relative ease. They this week confirmed their THIRTEENTH consecutive league title in France.
Lyon were heavy favourites ahead of the first leg, in France. Chelsea started well, with Emma Hayes' side being well-drilled and disciplined to limit Lyon's attacking threat. A desperately unfortunately own goal from Magda Eriksson saw Lyon take the lead, before a corner from Marozsan was touched in by Henry to put Lyon 2-0 up in the first half - a score line that was harsh on Chelsea. The Blues were given hope on the stroke of half-time when we won a penalty - but Fran Kirby saw her effort saved by Lyon keeper Bouhaddi... and at this point, it was a genuine worry that Lyon could run away with the tie.
This Chelsea side, however, proved to be made of sterner stuff - the Blues came out in the second half and stuck to the game plan, gradually working our way more and more into the game, and creating chances. The persistence and application of the team earned its just reward, when one of our players of the season, Erin Cuthbert, latched onto a header from substitute Beth England header to finish past Bouhaddi, and earn Chelsea an absolutely vital away goal!. The match ended 2-1 to Lyon, meaning that Chelsea take on Lyon at Kingsmeadow with our hopes of reaching our first-ever Champions League final very much intact - we are very much in this tie, and at h

###Women's Champions League quarter-final, second leg: Olympique Lyonnais Féminin vs Chelsea FC Women
Date: 21st April 2019
KO: 16:00 BST
Competition: Women’s Champions League (semi-final, first leg)
Venue: Groupama Stadium
Welcome to the /r/chelsealadiesfc match thread for Chelsea Women's visit to Lyon in the first leg of our Champions League semi-final!
This thread is for all pre-match, live and post-match discussion of the above fixture, and the body of the post will be updated with line-ups and match events.
PREVIEW:
On Sunday afternoon, Chelsea FC Women will face Lyon in the semi-finals of the Women's Champions League. The French champions have won the competition for the past three years in a row, and are widely regarded as the best European club team (and by a long way). It is the first time Chelsea will have faced Lyon in any competition - the French side include stars such as the Ballon d'Or winner, Ada Hegerberg, and the legendary French striker Eugenie Le Sommer, amongst a whole host of other massive names. Izzy Christensen and Lucy Bronze will be two names familiar to Chelsea - the former Man City players having both moved across the channel in recent years. In the words of Karen Carney in the pre-match press conference, Lyon are the "galaticos" of women's football.
Chelsea will never have faced a tougher test. Lyon beat our quarter-final opponents, PSG, 5-0 in the league last weekend... with PSG being their closest domestic challengers. After a cruel last-minute own goal ended Chelsea's FA Cup run last weekend, and with a top 2 finish in the WSL now beyond us, the Champions League is the only competition left for Chelsea this season. It has long been the focus of Emma Hayes and her team, as they look to take Chelsea to the next level on the European stage - the first objective has been reached, in matching last season's run to the semis, and now it is time to see whether Chelsea can take the next step. When facing a behemoth like Lyon, however, that will be much easier said than done...
A crowd of over 20000 fans is expected at Lyon's Groupama stadium - and an electric atmosphere will surely await both teams for this highly-anticipated tie. Playing the first leg away may play into Chelsea's hands - if we can frustrate Lyon, and stay in the tie, we will have a chance at Kingsmeadow with our home crowd!
