A list of puns related to "Nightmare Alley (1947 film)"

"Once described as the greatest movie not made by arch cynic Billy Wilder, Tyrone Power gives his finest performance as the fairground hustler who works his way into society by fair means and foul, including murder. But Powerβs fall is every bit as precipitous as his rise as he ends up back in the fairground as the carnival geek in this remarkable and disturbing movie."^(1)
The film originally did not do well because it was deemed too scandalous upon release, I selected this film because 1) honestly, its availability on youtube for everyone to enjoy and 2) its actually fairly highly regarded, despite its lack of name recognition.
Watch the original now - Guillermo del Toro is directing the remake with Bradley Cooper, Mara Rooney, William Defoe and Cate Blanchett, amongst others. While principal photography is stalled you can watch the OG. Happy 4th of July Yanks!

Perhaps one of the great qualities of the film Nightmare Alley directed by Edmund Goulding (1947), among others, is the fact that for the first time Tyrone Power the eternal romantic and hero of past films represents an authentic con man and opportunist in a departure from all his previous performances.
The result was this film that breaks rules even when compared to other film-noir classics of the same time and has its main actor in the best performance of his entire career (without exaggeration). In this film Tyrone Power is Stanton Carlisle a low-living man who without much perspective works as an assistant to Zenna, the mentalist in a carnival show. This is where Stan plans to one day leave that life and move on to higher ambitions in life. For this reason, he learns how to read people's minds in a trick that Zenna teaches him. He then marries Molly - who is also one of the attractions of this same Carnival and the two move to Chicago where he becomes a celebrity in an exclusive high society club. It is in there that Stan meets the third important woman of his life, the psychologist Lilith Ritter who, like him, also has a very swindler side.
From the beginning to the end he leads a cast also starring excellent actresses like: Joan Blondell who plays Zenna, Collen Gray in the role of Molly and Hellen Walker as Lilith Ritter. Between reading people's minds, Tarot cards, guessing, premonitions, poorly resolved loves and an almost supernatural atmosphere, this film captivates the viewer's attention until its culminating end. Not to mention the presence of a "geek" who will impress the most unprepared. It is a fantastic film.

As with other movies, the scores are set to change as time passes. Meanwhile, I'll post some short reviews on the movie.
> A gorgeous, fantastically sinister moral fable about the cruel predictability of human nature and the way entire systems β from carnies and con men to shrinks and Sunday preachers β are engineered to exploit it.
> Stunningly-detailed, with an A-list cast up and down the line, itβs a gorgeous and gloomy dip into the dark side, immersive and bleak from start to finish.
-Roger Moore, Movie Nation: 3.5/4
> With a semi-playful nod to the 1945 film Detour and more than a few rain-drenched streets, Nightmare Alley pays tribute to noir. But itβs also its own dark snow globe, luminous and finely faceted, and one of del Toroβs most fluent features.
-Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter
> This sordid excavation into the hollowness of a human soul is a strange fit for a director whoβs spent his career searching for magic in the darkest margins of our world, but del Toroβs natural empathy for even the most damnable creatures he finds there sparks new life into βNightmare Alleyβ as it narrows towards its inevitable dead end.
-David Ehrlich, Indiewire: Grade B
> The period details are impeccable, the look and feel are seductive, but the muddled script lacks the killer instinct of its central figures.
> From a rain-soaked carnival midway to a glossy, Art Deco therapistβs office, everything in Guillermo del Toroβs Nightmare Alley looks gorgeous. There just doesnβt seem to be a lot going on under the art direction.
That's it, that's the post... is anyone as shocked as I am right now?
I absolutely love Del Toro and all of his movies, Pans Labyrinth being my number 1. Nightmare Alley is extremely close to that spot. The whole movie was just a mixture of emotions, visually pleasing and a bunch of absolutely enjoyable twists at the end. I hope that it gets nominated for an award and if it doesnβt I would be surprised!
If anyone else has seen it what are yβallβs opinions?
Case in point: Guillermo del Toroβs star-studded crime thriller βNightmare Alley,β which launched in fifth place to a muted $3 million from 2,145 theaters. Itβs a rough start for a movie that reportedly carries a $60 million price tag, the most money that Searchlight Pictures, the studio behind βNightmare Alley,β has ever spent on a film.
Rooney Mara gets 6th under Richard Jenkins, just above the Pearlmen/Steambergen split card, and without an "and" credit?
She's the films leading lady! Did... did her agent just forget to negotiate?
While everyone else saw that movie about Zendaya and her incredibly extra boyfriend (?) bending the space time continuum to get in to MIT; I saw Nightmare Alley, which made me smile.
Thoughts? It's a lot better than what some people are saying, I think, it feels even breezy for a 2.5 hour movie. In fact I'd say it's his best flick since Pan's Labyrinth maybe.
Thinking about going to the movies tomorrow night to pair a second screening of Sing 2 with another movie. Which one do you guys think would be the better one to watch sooner in theaters?
Anybody else seeing no showtimes for Nightmare Alley beyond this Thursday? I live in NYC, and none of my Regal theaters have posted showtimes past this Thursday. I really wanted to see the movie, but Iβve been sick and unable. I was hoping to see it by next week, but it doesnβt appear as if Nightmare Alley will continue its theatrical run past this week. I know itβs done abysmally at the box office, but Iβm surprised it wonβt even last a month in theaters. Anybody else seeing no showtimes for Nightmare Alley past this Thursday? Is there a chance future showtimes have just yet to be posted?
