Hello r/njpw
Today, we'll be talking about the 2012 New Japan Cup and the title match that ensued from it, which took place at Wrestling Dontaku. Seeing as we had our current New Japan cup and resulting title match just a few weeks ago, this a pretty good time to cover this.
At this point in time, Okada has been established as a champion. He's beaten the best wrestler in the company, and successfully defended the title once. However, it's spring time, and you know what that means. Every heavyweight in the company is looking to win New Japan's big spring tournament and get a shot at the rookie champion, and that storyline dominates the company for the next month. There aren't gonna be many feuds advanced save for the title feuds. Apart from that, it's all about the New Japan Cup. Who will win and get the chance to face Okada for the title? Let's find out.

Usually, the New Japan Cup is held in March. This year, however, the New Japan Cup would be moved a bit later to April, with the May Wrestling Dontaku show hosting the winner's title match. Why? I'm not exactly sure. In any case, in its place, we got the New Japan Glory tour.
New Japan Glory was a short tour (just 8 shows over 10 days), none of which I would call major. there were a few title matches, but no major feuds were started or furthered, excepting one beat with the tag titles. Everything's in a bit of a holding pattern until the New Japan Cup. Nevertheless, we can still talk about those title matches.
The first title match was the main event of the first day of the tour. Davey Richards challenged Prince Devitt for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title. This is the third time Richards has challenged Devitt for the title, and it would be the third time Devitt would retain the title, pinning Richards with a Bloody Sunday. This is the end of this series between Apollo 55 and No Remorse Corp, as Devitt would go on tour with CMLL shortly after, not returning until after the New Japan Cup, and Richards and Romero would focus on a new set of challengers for the Jr.

Setting The Stage
Toru Yano, known as the Sublime Master Thief, is notorious for his ability to steal a win from almost anyone. His sticky-taping, turnbuckle pad-removing, low-blowing antics have gotten him upset victories over Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi, Minoru Suzuki, Jon Moxley and many other similarly impressive wrestlers. More than anything though, his matches are just a joy to watch, with their silliness and brevity serving as a nice contrast to New Japan Pro Wrestling's intense and hard-hitting main events.
Colt "Boom Boom" Cabana, despite wrestling for NJPW-affiliated Ring Of Honor for a number of years, had never wrestled for New Japan before 2019. He debuted on the Honor Rising tour in a match challenging for the NEVER 6-Man Tag Team Championships against Toru Yano, Ryusuke Taguchi and Togi Makabe. While Colt's team was unsuccessful, his goofy enthusiasm and unorthodox style quickly endeared him to the Japanese fans, and the match also gave us a taste of what kind of mischief him and Yano could get up to together.
When the brackets for the New Japan Cup were announced, it was inevitable that Yano and Cabana would clash in the second round, and comedy wrestling fans were excited. These two titans had only met in singles competition once before, in a 2017 Ring Of Honor match that you can watch right here. Cabana won that encounter, but with this one taking place in a New Japan ring, Toru Yano was the heavy favourite for maybe the first time in his career. But whatever the outcome, we knew this match was going to be a lot of fun.
The Match

I'm not going to give an in-depth rundown of the whole match, because nothing kills a joke more than explaining it. But I am going to highlight a few key aspects that really make it work.
I absolutely love the opening of this match. It starts with Cabana putting Yano in waistlock, but just as an excuse to frisk him and find a hidden roll of tape. I like how this immediately establishes that Cabana is taking Yano seriously. The reason Yano manages to upset so many more talented wrestlers is because they look at him and his silly antics and don't see him as a threat, which inevitably leads to an opening for Yano to lowblow them while the ref isn't looking, or tape them to th

The New Japan Cup will be a 16-person single-elimination tournament, with the winner getting a Pacific Championship match at Sakura Genesis!!! Based on their recent performances, AGM Dan and I have agreed that /u/mlgbonghits4, /u/SevenSulivin and /u/fsnwj will be entered into the tournament with no need for a qualifier. For the rest of you, you'll have to go all out on this show to earn your spot! And PLEASE INCLUDE A TIEBREAKER, we don't always use them here in the Pacific but we don't want any draws in these qualifying matches.
OPENING MATCH
Faf (/u/fsnwj) vs. /u/SevenSulivin vs. /u/mlgbonghits4 - The three men who've already qualified for the tournament face off in our opener, scrambling to get some momentum heading into the New Japan Cup.
GRUDGE MATCH
/u/BestInBounds vs. /u/VacantForHOF - Besty summed up this match better than I ever could: "In the land of the rising sun I challenge you to a duel. New vs Old. Rookie of the Year vs One of the Pacific's pretender kings. Rising star vs burnt out bum. In Japan I wish to tear down the faux "legacy" you claim to have built. In NJPW, I intend to tear you down. And with my actions, I give myself up onto the lord so he may see the kingdom I shall carve out for him hear on the mortal plane. So that he may see my success and know that his one true servant is seeing out his will upon his creations."
NEW JAPAN CUP QUALIFIERS
/u/DariusShade vs. /u/el_maestro_ vs. Yoshas Orion (/u/Fyrma) vs. Lucas Rodrigues (/u/The-P1) - The four of you have had a no-show or DQ within the past two Pacific shows, so as a result only one of you will be allowed to enter the New Japan Cup.
/u/BenjaminEarl vs. /u/TheRandomGuy199 - Benji's only recently returned to the Pacific Division, and he faces quite the New Japan Cup gatekeeper in Random.
Blitz (/u/PrivateSloth986) vs. Alexander McKennedy (/u/MUZZA__44) - It would be quite the fall to go from main-eventing Wrestle Kingdom to not even being in the New Japan Cup, but Blitz will be doing everything he can to pull off an upset on the Scottish Terminator.
/u/MidKnightDreary vs. /u/ThatOneGuyHawk - Two competitors who've had some ups and downs in the division face off for a big opportunity.
/u/The__Avenger vs. /u/AurumVocem - They clashed in trios competition at New Beginning In Osaka, with the Outer Circle coming out on top. Let's see if the results change in a h

Last night the bracket for the New Japan Cup was released, and while everyone rightfully flocked to Ospreay vs. Takagi, Suzuki vs. Nagata is another highlight. I knew they had a long history, but this will actually be a tie-breaker of a match. Since 2003, they have wrestled 10 times. Nagata has won 5, and Suzuki has won 5. Considering Nagata's age, he will likely be retired in a few years meaning this could be their last encounter, and the winner will be the winner of the 17 year long feud.
Another side note, each have a victory over the other by referee stoppage, which is also a fun fact.

The History of the GEDO belt
The winner of this Pick'ems tournament will become the new /r/SquaredCircle GEDO champion! The GEDO belt was incorporated into the NJPW Pick'ems during the G1 Climax 26 tournament. The idea behind it was to have a physical title belt that gets shipped around the world and held by the winners until someone new wins the Pick'ems. /u/smileychels from Canada was our first GEDO champ. Here she is holding the title. While holding the title, she decided to "fancy" it up a bit and added some bedazzling to it. Eventually, she lost the title to /u/icon162 in the World Tag League from the UK. Then Icon lost to /u/mrpandasnatch, who won the title in the New Japan Cup Pick'ems last year. The winner of the 2017 BOSJ pick'em was our first Indian champ, /u/Tarun_Vishal who won the belt. Then, from Finland, /u/NoamDarwinAwards won the title after he won the G1 Climax 27 Pick'ems. Finally, our current champion, from winning the 2017 World Tag League Pick'em is /u/yellochoco44.
