Just yesterday, we only had three states in the yellow (Hawaii, Florida, and Connecticut), and today there are four! Welcome Louisiana to yellow status! :D
As a reminder, the color coding of spread/cases/general badness per the CDC is crimson, red, orange, yellow, and green. There is an additional U.S. territory in yellow (Puerto Rico) and we do actually have a territory in green (Northern Mariana Islands). But as of now, no additional states are yellow or green. I do think we're getting close in some places, though!
Other pieces of good news from today's data:
- No states or territories have infection rates in the red, and only two are orange (New Mexico and Colorado). Every other state or territory has infection rates in the yellow (35 states or territories) or green (15 states or territories).
- Only two states (West Virginia and Idaho) have vaccination rates below 50% of the population, and 10 states and territories have rates at 75% or higher.
- Cases per 100K for the five biggest metropolitan areas in the country (Dallas, Chicago, New York, Houston, and Los Angeles) are the lowest they've been since before the delta wave. So at least in those locations, life is getting much closer to how it was during that brief, beautiful period of the pre-delta summer.
- Alaska is the only remaining crimson state, but there's still good news even there. The state's 1-dose vaccine rate is almost at 60%, daily new cases are still dropping (although there are still higher than other states), and their daily death rates are at a 7-day average of 3.9 people. The main reason why Alaska is still coded crimson is due to the nature of their hospital availability. Their ICU usage is still critical, and just because of how sparsely populated the state is respective to other unique features like climate and city size/services, it's a problem. However, other states on the mainland with spread-out populations and fewer services available are starting to show improvement, so I predict that Alaska will eventually, too. The only thing that worries me about it as a unique location is that we're starting to get into the period during which their winter is just so much harsher than anything the lower 48 are accustomed to, which will drive people indoors. I hope that the vaccination will continue to climb to help this; it remains on an upward trajectory.
