A Japanese Nakajima Ki-44 βTojoβ fighter-interceptor test firing its armament, 2 fixed, forward-firing, synchronised 12.7 mm Ho-103 machine guns + 2x wing mounted 12.7 mm Ho-103 machine guns, some variants were armed with two 40 mm Ho-301 cannon in the wings, firing caseless ammunition.

The Nakajima Ki-44 ShΕki "Tojo" was less maneuverable than its predecessor, the Zero, but it was clearly superior overall as a combat aircraft. As an interceptor it could match Allied types in climbs and dives, giving pilots more flexibility in combat and greater pilot confidence.

A captured Nakajima Ki 43 Hayabusa (Peregrine Falcon), Allied codename "Oscar", being evaluated by the Republic of China Air Force , 1943. When the Chinese Civil War resumed, both the Nationalists (ROC) and the Communists (PRC) used leftover Japanese and American aircraft against each other.

This aircraft was loaned to the EAA Museum in Wisconsin, before being loaned to the Museum of Flight in Seattle, and is now loaned to the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson AZ, along with the museum's Ki-115 Tsurugi and MXY-7 Ohka Model 43 K-1
