A Quick Summary of my Pihole Configuration
I've been using Pihole for several years now. I run two Pihole servers, each of which is running on just a humble Raspberry Pi Zero and Zero W, respectively.
I'm running both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols. With the various block lists I'm using, these servers are monitoring over 1 million domains each. They block nearly 40% of all DNS requests made by my network. I get very few false positives.
I've read multiple places that the Pi Zero couldn't handle more than about 100,000 domains. I haven't had any real trouble with 10x that amount. I do get a couple warnings each time I restart the Pihole server, mainly that the CPU is overloaded with loading all of the block lists, but after about 15 minutes, there's no problem whatsoever.
How has Pihole changed how I use the internet?
Faster Web Page Loads
After I started running Pihole, I noticed that web pages do load significantly quicker. I got so used to running Pihole that I forgot what my life used to be like before I had it.
Then, because of travel, I was without Pihole for a little over two weeks, and that period was hell! Even though I run uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger on my mobile browser, both of which are quite effective, they don't help with mobile games, nor with devices like Roku.
Roku's Free Movies Are Actually Watchable with Pihole Running
If you've ever tried to watch one of Roku's "free" movies without Pihole running, you'll probably agree with me that they are simply unbearable. Roku will insert ads randomly throughout the movie. As if commercials aren't bad enough, they will show you the same irrelevant ad for IBS medication—or some other nonsense that is completely irrelevant to me—at least 5 times in a row every 10 minutes or so.
As if that's not bad enough, you will quickly realize that, with traditional broadcast TV, the station programmers actually put some real thought into where to insert commercials, and the content creators clearly produce movies and shows with clean "breakpoints" for this purpose.
The free Roku movies throw all of that forethought out the window. For example, I was watching Wind River, which is an excellent movie with Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. This movie has some heavy material in it. Multiple times, I'd be watching a pivotal scene, only to have Roku randomly insert some dumbass ad.
