Homo Divinus: Manannán mac Lir, Territory God

Two All-Beef Patties, Divine Sauce, Sea Foam, ...

Manannán mac Lir (Mac for short) is a real “man amongst gods”. He does everything he can to look after and protect mankind. Some homo divinus exploit homo sapiens, some homo divinus can care less, but Mac is one of the truly good homo divinus who helps. Mac set up base many sars ago (tens of thousands of years) on the Isle of Man right in the middle of the Irish Sea where he could be in a central location for anything that happened in the British Isles. He also had a rather special apple orchard in the Americas he tended.

Mac was a sea god stationed on the Isle of Man to look after the British Isle after the Great Flood. These Territory gods were stationed around the globe to take care of those areas not under active homo divinus operations, like Egypt and Mesopotamia. As the frontier was pushed backwards, these Territory gods were incorporated into the new homo divinus Pivot, just like Mac did with the coming of the Tuatha De Dann. Where before the Territory god or goddess may have taken care of everything themselves, they now were part of a team of gods and goddesses, some of whom were their offspring (or the other way around as the case may be).

Mac’s role was to herd those hominids who were outside the active homo divinus plans for Earth (herding cats is probably easier). Ōkuninushi served this role in Japan until the coming of Ninigi, as did Njörðr for the Vanir in their war against the Æsir. The British Isles were a wild and woolly frontier that finally got brought into the whole Civilization Game only about a sar (3,600 years) ago (roughly the same time as Japan).

It Goes with the Territory

Mac, like all the Territory gods, came loaded to the teeth with divine items. One of the roles of Territory god was being prepared to handle any contingency with overwhelming force, and arguably his MOST potent item was his secret island headquarters on the Isle of Man. Mac was like a a

Skadi, An Cailleach, Njord, and Manannan Mac Lir...a rambling (and unconventional) musing...

For those who are unfamiliar with me, I am a reconstructionist who honors both the Gaelic and Norse pantheons. I have been very careful to keep my ceremonies and devotions to these two pantheons very separate, with the view that should I ever mix them, it must be done very carefully and thoughtfully ... and with the above named deities, I am sensing a strong 'pull.' I think maybe the archtypalists here are beginning to affect my judgement (that's humor, folks...)

Njord is not the god of the sea, but of sailors and sailing (Aegir is the Sea.) He is not of the original Aesir, but a Vanir god, who ends up joining the Aesir and defending and working with them. He ends up marrying Skadi, another deity who is not an Aesir, but a Jotunn (or giantess in some translations and later folklore) Her domain is the mountains, and she is associated with winter and snow. Their marriage is not successful, as Njord prefers to live at the seaside, and Skdi prefers the snowy mountains.

In Gaelic lore, Manannan Mac Lir is also not The Sea, but he is "Mac Lir," the son of the sea. He guides sailors, cloaks those he is defending in fog, and is the god of the Otherworld. Just as Njord is not originally "of the Aesir," Manannan is not of the "tuatha de Danaan," the key race of Gaelic gods. And yet, when the Tuautha de are defeated and need to retreat to the Otherworld, it is Manannan who provides each with their own home there.

In one bit of Irish lore, he marries An Cailleach. An Cailleach (who, for reference, is the deity to whom I am closest), is described as a giantess, who existed long before the Tuatha de. In fact, she is considered one of the most ancient deities in Ireland and Scotland; Scottish lore is consistent in seeing her as the Goddess of Winter, from Samhain to Beltain, and as the creator-goddess to made the mountains of the Scottish Highlands and islands of western Scotland by arranging boulders. The blanket of snow across the Highlands each winter is said to be the 'first tartan,' that of An Cailleach draping her white cloth across the land. She brings the snow, herds deer, and is the most formidable force in Scotland. In one Irish myth, she turns to stone waiting for Manannan to return from the sea from her mountain top perch.

I can not avoid the many similarities between these two sets: all four are from outside the predominant race of gods, all have unsuccessful marriages, the goddesses are both goddesses of the mountains and the snows, and both

Honoring Manannan Mac Lir at Midsummer

Midsummer (or Summer Solstice - I could never figure out why the FIRST day of summer is called "Mid" summer...) has always been a conundrum for me.

It's actually not a historic celebration based on the oldest lore in Gaelic cultures, in spite of its popularity today. But one important exception is on the Isle of Man. To the present day, residents bring green rushes up to the top of the mountain, and present them as 'rent' to Manannan MacLir, Gaelic god of the Sea and the Otherworld. I really like the symbolism of landholders merely being 'renters' in the natural world, with a responsibility for the condition of the property.

Manannan Mac Lir (“Son of the Sea”) looms large in Irish, Manx, and Scottish lore. He is said to dwell on the Isle of Man; his “cloak was a fog or mist that he conjured to hide the island from invaders; and it is he who advises the Tuatha de Danaan to take up residence in the Otherworld, and assigns each god their own home when they do so. One of his daughters is Cliodhna, the Queen of the Banshees in County Cork.

He appears in Scotland as well. According to Clan MacDonald (the highland Clan that dominated parts of the Western Isles),

*“The often repeated tale of Manannán and Còllum Cille’s broken chalice reveals a great deal about the transition from Celtic druid beliefs to Christianity. Còllum Cille [the Christian Saint Columba] had a broken chalice he sent with a servant to be repaired. The servant was met on the road by Manannán who asked if there was anything the servant had need of…The servant showed Manannán the broken chalice which was mended with one mist filled breath from Manannán’s lips. Manannán instructed the servant to return to Còllum Cille…Còllum Cille immediately denounced the act as sorcery and demanded the servant go throughout the land proclaiming Manannán was a demon who would spend eternity in hell.

When Manannán heard that his acts of kindness were not acceptable he proclaimed, “I have watched over Eire from the time of the Tuatha de Danaan.I have protected those on the seas and those of the Isles. If I am no longer welcome I will go to the Isles off Scotland where I am welcome.” And it is so today that those who look to Manannán for protection are no longer found in Eire or Mann, but those of the outer islands off Scotland still speak of Manannán.”*

Manannan Mac Lir - Vision**

Hi, please help. This is going to sound crazy, but I wish it was my first experience with the gods visiting me. On June 23rd I’ve received a vision of myself running through NYC pride on a white horse. The horse wants to do nothing but run, and I hold on and feel the wind in my hair. In the vision I’m standing in the horses’s back with my hands outstretched. Initially in my research of Manannan, I’m FLABERGASTED by the comparisons. My current patron is Poseidon (Who wishes me to refer to him as Papa exclusively.), I’m a tarot card diviner and my prophetic boyfriend (were both queer boys) says that when he watches me divine there’s a stream of water running through the table. He also almost exclusively refers to me as a magician. I have ALWAYS been dramatically drawn to the beach as a liminal space between life (the dunes) and the other (the sea) … I feel an overwhelming joy at just exsisting in the sand. I’m born under the willow tree of celtic astrology (sacred tree to Manannan?). My favorite food is pork (I was raised Italian, but later learned through 23&Me that I’m 78%Brittish/Irish… I had many questions.). I recently started making homemade ginger and rose fermanted ale (MAYBE starting 2 weeks ago? I will have a brand new batch of rose ale available tomorrow ON HIS DAY.) I am able to see ghosts (Mostly children who are lost and need help finding their way). And I have been drawn… no… PULLED towards helping the dead and spirits. I follow an eastern philosphy path based in spotaneous joy, and reaching this state through constant meditation (I’m a Reiki practitioner, and this is something that was taught by Usui Sensei.). As I research deeper, the more OVERT and DIRECT the connections are. INCLUDING, in my bag which contains a sword letter opener, an amythest rock (Shield? I know its a reach), my sacred gold cutting sheers (wildcrafting), and a red snapper skull which I cleaned after cooking on my sacred day - Christmas Eve. NOT TO MENTION, when I searched images…. i have the same starwberry blonde/undertone ginger long hair he’s depicted witg (I’m 6’2’ and it fells below my belly button.). When I say the image almost looks like me at 40… I wish I could post a side by side edit of the images. I just need to connect with folks and talk about how any of this sounds as well as some lessons that go deeper than google searches.
