[TOMT] British TV series -- made sometime between 2018-2021 -- can't remember the show. Victorian times. There were guys stealing corpses and selling to surgeons. Then the resurrectionists started killing people. A punch and judy puppet helped drive one of them mad. What is this show?!?

It's not Carnival Row, nor Frankenstein, nor Dead Still. Arg. It must have been on Acorn or BBC America or one of the US streamers. (I don't think the show referred to the corpse stealers as "resurrectionists," but I know the word now...)

If The First Law were to be adapted in to an HBO-esque TV series, where should they start?

I feel they should start with Best Served Cold. The Blade Itself may be too fantasy for many people to get in to it immediately but BSC is so cinematic and would be so easy to wrap up. Then if they turned around and adapted the first trilogy, it would be so cool when Shivers pops up as a kid.

What do you think?

[TOMT] [British? TV series][post-2000?] People get strange messages through phone and recorders launching them on a wild "treasure hunt" full of weird events. There are various teams/factions all trying to solve the mystery first. Turns out to be a trap by aliens.

I only recently remembered this series vaguely (could also be a movie?). I must have seen it in the past two decades (probably after 2010, but the series/movie could be older itself). It has a relatively modern look (which is why I think it's from after 2000), and looks distinctively "British".

The plot goes a bit like this: Someone gets a mysterious message on a recorder (or phone?) inviting them to a sort of treasure hunt where he has to solve mysterious riddles, which when solved enables him to get further and further in what looks like a high-stakes and violent "game". It turns out the protagonist isn't the only one having been sucked into this game, and multiple people and factions are after the same thing, all trying to one-up others to solve the riddles and enigmas first (it's al quite high-paced and violent). At the end, our protagonist and his friends he made along the way "win" the game, but it turns out to be a trap set by aliens manipulating humans to their end like lab rats all along (note that this was unknown for most of the series/movie). There's no happy ending. The "win" in the game was just a requirement for the aliens to take over Earth. The series/movie ends with a terrifying scene of the aliens having attained their objective and taking over with much destruction. Everyone dies.

It's not "Utopia" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utopia_(British_TV_series)), though it has quite a similar feel to it.

EDIT 1 : proposed series & movies that don't fit the bill:

  • Dispatches
  • Await Further Instructions
  • GANTZ
  • Liar game
  • Second season of The OA ==> MAYBE ?
  • The World’s End ==> MAYBE ?
  • Rat Race
  • Black Mirror - Episode: shut up and dance
  • Dr. Who
  • Ghost Writer
  • Falling Skies
  • Invasion : Earth, last episode ==> MAYBE ?
  • 13 Sins
  • Nerve
  • Misfits
  • Inside No. 9 ==> No idea, too many episodes to review
  • Twilight Zone’s Mapple Street

EDIT 2 : I have to take into account that my memories of this could be a mashup of various series and movies I saw in the 2010's as a drunk student... + I kinda have a hyperactive mind and going through sleep deprivation at the moment (exhausted, but dreaming like never before).

Respect The Mauler Twins (Invincible: TV Series)

I'd say I'll miss you, brother, but I can always make another one

Mauler was a mad scientist who always has a clone of himself around as insurance and to help with his fringe science experiments. Get this: turns out the key to working and living with your clone is making sure neither of you knows who’s the clone and who’s the original. Otherwise, things get messy. The Twins commit crimes to fund their crazy science experiments, which, usually threaten Earth in some way. Though they possess invulnerable skin and immense strength, their greatest asset is their genius-level intelligence. Unfortunately, they may never figure out which one is the original.

Since they're identical I will cover all of the clones as if they were one guy

Need help finding a very GOOD OLD TV Series, in English Subbed!

I am finding a Russian TV Series named, "RANETKI". It is fully available on YouTube but, you know, it's in Russian!

I am really MAD about Ranetki Girls and their songs. They are just AWESOME and I used to like them more when I heard their song, 'О ВСбС', featuring in the Radio Station, VLADIVOSTOK FM, of GTA IV! Man, I went crazy back then. Those were the days!

I managed to find starting 6 episodes in English Subbed at Veoh.com. But after that no luck! I really love the series so far but now i am in depression, LOL, due to not being able to find a single episode, after 6th episode, in English!

I just cant fully express myself, but I am in love with this series, so damn, this series is so good even though I just saw 6 episodes yet!

Also, this TV series made me develop very much interest in Russian Language.

If anyone, my Russkiy Brother Sister, manages to find it in English subs, It would be a very very big help to me. Please!

  11. ROSE WITH A THORN: Batman goes after an eco-terrorist, in a race against the clock to find a way to cure a dying security guard.

  12. FEAR THE REAPER: A psychopath begins putting street thugs into hallucinogenic states of fear, in a pursuit to usurp the place of fear and respect Batman is beginning to gain in Gotham.

  13. ONE BAD DAY: Red Hood One, inspired by Batman, kidnaps the leading mobsters of Gotham, building he and Batman to a face off, at Ace Chemicals.

A list of things tv series did wrong which in turn might result in too much deviation from the Books
  1. In the books Yennefer hears what Witcher wishes for and was happy for it, while in the tv series Three Jackdaws tells her about the wish and she gets mad at him for it was magic that resulted in her feelings for the Witcher. They might not even address it and will probably forget about the diffΓ©rence if the writers are too lazy.

  2. Cahir almost killed Vilgefortz. If anyone's read the books how much stronger Vilgefortz is but Cahir almost killing him destroys the notion of Vilgefortz being the strongest mage unless ofcourse there is another plot armour in the following seasons. If Cahir could beat Vilgefortz with such ease how are we supposed to buy what will happen to Geralt in future.

  3. The Doppler that is sent to hunt Ciri down or bring her back. Dopplers are usually kind and friendly species and they do not talk in 1st person plural pronoun. I had such a good time reading the Doppler story in the books only for them to be portrayed as evil in Tv Series.

  4. Nenneke could be introduced in the future or they might ignore her altogether but she was an influential character in the book.

  5. The battle of sodden isn't portrayed in the books like it was shown in the tv series and Dark magic ?? the best that Wizards or a strong wizard like Yennefer or Vilgefortz could do was kill at most 5 people at once and here we have mages being turned into fireball, magic mist snakes and Fringilla single-handedly destroying all her counterparts.

There's probably more feel free to add them.

JUST realized the way I process TV series is 100% ADHD - feeling dumb now

I'm curious if you guys have a similar thing. It's not life-changing, it's just amazing that I've never realized it's completely ADHD.

I love series. I watch them all the time.

Cause some series is always on in the background when I'm doing something else. Cause other things are soooo boring! It's my productive solution, trust me.

But: I LOATHE starting a new show. Even when I know it will be amazing.

If it's recommended, I'll make 3-4 attempts at starting before I get hooked in.

If it's something that interests me personally, I won't get hooked in until I accidentally stumble upon it the 8th time and finally watch more than 20min.

I just realised this huge part of my life is cause I get lost with all the new characters, the new plot is complicated and I'm not used to the new dynamic!

Don't know about you guys, but I don't like to come to those ADHD conclusions. I'm not dumb. And they make me feel very dumb.

Edit: Wow, afterferthought: same with books.

[OTHER] I am looking for a great TV series, any advice? (2021)

Hi guys, i ve just finished my session of exams for this year and now i have a lot of spare time. I ve decided to start watching a tv series, but I don’t know which one to choose.

Series like Breaking Bad and Peaky (fookin) Blinders are my favorite because of the action and cleverness involved, Walter and Tommy are both badasses but they’re so damn smart. I am looking something like this.

I was thinking at:

  • Better Call Saul: i ve started watching it but then stopped at the 1st season i think, it was slow and didn’t attract me as much as breaking bad
  • The 100: i know it has nothing to do with the series I mentioned above, but i read the plot and noticed that surely there will be a lot of action, maybe some strategy as well (in terms of decision making to manage the extreme situation in which they are)

Should i watch them in your opinion? Btw feel free to advice me new tv series that can fit that mixture of action and cleverness

(Anyway i ve also liked GoT and stranger things)

[Request] Haven't watched Netflix or TV in about 10 years. What are some must-watch series?

Between my primary media consumption being video games for my entire childhood and university taking up most of my time once I moved out, I really haven't watched any Netflix or TV in general over the past 10 years. Maybe a few movies with friends when I visited theirs, but that's about it. Since I'm going into grad school in the fall I was thinking maybe now is the time to get into Netflix and watch some of the great stories I may have missed out on.

For all intents and purposes, consider me completely spoiler-free on pretty much every series on TV and Netflix, give or take. I don't know what happens in pretty much any Netflix series' or most TV shows' plots beyond the general premise of the show. I found I have a broad array of interests when it comes to movies, so genre isn't an issue for me and pretty much any recommendation is fair game.

What do you think are those must watch (or just generally amazing - even if niche) series on Netflix I should look into? I'm on Canadian Netflix but have access to a VPN, if that matters for your choices.

EDIT: Wow. I really didn't expect this to get a lot of reception, but thank you all so much!!! I have a lot of things to catch up on it seems and I'll definitely be referencing this list for a long-time!

How could the Eisenhorn TV series show his internal dialogue and narration?

Like many others I'm cautiously optimistic about the upcoming Eisenhorn TV series. On one hand Eisenhorn is an amazing introduction to 40K (one of the first 40K books I remember ever reading was Eisenhorn), on the other hand I'm not sure if a TV show can capture one of the best snd most important parts of the trilogy: his narration and internal dialogue.

One of my favourite parts of the whole trilogy is in the first dozen pages where Eisenhorn decides not to put a suffering noblewoman out of her misery because the resulting court case would delay his work. The sentence "* But if you hate me, I know this about you… you are no inquisitor. You don't have the moral strength.*" is chilling. In one sentence Dan introduces us to some of the central themes of the trilogy and the 40K universe as a whole - doing morally horrible things in the name of duty and the greater good. This one sentence summarizes what it's like to be an Imperial Inquisitor - to have the moral confidence, the arrogance, that your work is more important than everything else. We learn here that Eisenhorn, while not an unfeeling monster, will do anything to fulfill his duty. It's delicious foreshadowing to what he'll do later on, all in the name of his duty. The "lesser" evils he'll commit because he thinks it'll let him stop a greater one. How can a TV show possibly convey something like this? And this is just one example out of many.

I hope that GW will be really careful and make sure that the show can convey the awesomeness of Dan's work. I'm sure they'll find a way, perhaps I'm just enough of a screenwriter to figure it out

Is it worth getting a Series X if I can't reasonably get a 4k TV?

Right now, I have an Xbox One S which hold very well, but I know that in a year or two I will need a new gen console, however, 4k TVs never became a thing in my country, this is also why I didn't bothered about the One X, the main reason I want to upgrade is that soon most games will be next gen, however I can also get them for PC that I already have, I do prefer getting them for Xbox tho.

Is the Series X work well on non-4k TVs? will I notice any diffrence then my One S? (And don't tell me to get a Series S, the lack of a disc drive is a dealbreaker for me) and please don't be mad at me for not knowing, I don't really understand hardware, I'm a gamer only, not a computer guy

"Mad Men" - superb TV series; my multi-part review/analysis - SPOILERS below

I watched Mad Men in it's entirety several years back. Wow - truly superb & amazing series (I had started watching the show years ago, but stopped after several seasons. However, the second time around I committed to watching the entire series in several months). And, I can't believe how good this series was. One of my top top ten favorite TV dramas of all time. I feel like each episode is a work of art, literally. And, there are no bad episodes - all are equally exceptional.

The 1960 - 1970 time period seems to be captured perfectly on the show. Though the series takes place before my time (I was born in the early '70's) they did a thorough & painstaking job of re-creating this era. You can really empathize with what people were going through re: the various national tragedies (the deaths of JFK, MLK, and BK), & the obvious cultural changes - i.e., the civil rights movement, women's liberation/women's rights, the sexual revolution, etc.

Going along with the above, the use of music on the show (especially over the closing sequences/credits) is fantastic. I like how the earlier episodes featured the fluffy 1950's/early 1960's music, and then as the show progressed through the 1960's you had much harder/edgier rock, such as songs from The Jimi Hendrix Experience, etc. There was obviously a huge disparity in the American Culture from the early-mid 1960's vs. the later 1960's - and, I felt this was reflected extremely well on MM. It's interesting that you can see the first hints/shades of this in S1's scenes when Don Draper is "partying" with those bohemians in NYC; this made me think of what will happen in the later 1960's with the hippies, the counterculture movement, etc.

TV Series like Mad Men/Sopranos

I have seen both and I can comfortably say that these two had something in common that I can not express in words. They all had moments where nothing happened, but it was pivotal for the series or the characters. For example, the ending of Cold Cuts in the Sopranos, or the ending of Time Zones in Mad Men, although in both scenes there was really nothing going on, they both were important to capture the characters feelings and motives for their behavior and the theme for the series overall. Since I have seen the two, I am looking for another one to make me feel the same way, let me analyze what is going on instead of telling me upfront.

Petition to make folklore/evermore into a TV series

I saw someone talking about this somewhere (maybe TikTok or Twitter) and have been thinking about it since. Each episode could follow a different story line (a.k.a. song). One about the love triangle, no body no crime, The last great american dynasty, mad woman, β€˜tis the damn season, dorothea, champagne problems, tolerate it, illicit affairs, etc.

Edit: I do agree that music is Taylor’s passion and all I really want is for her to continue to make albums for me to laugh and smile and cry to lol. Because folklore is based on these fictional storylines (and taylor is a master lyricist) it’s already so easy to picture them playing out in your head while listening. I think this lends itself to some daydreams about how the stories started before the song or how they would continue after. I know a tv series is very unlikely but I just like to dream about how visually stunning it would be and how wonderfully the stories would play out. And as someone who doesn’t sing or act or do anything in that creative field, it’s easy for me to say oh this album is so visually rich it would be amazing to actually see it play out! But I know it is a far different story when you are the one creating the work and your passion is in one area.

What is a tv series you could watch over and over and never get sick of it?
