The Kalash are an ethnic group that live in three valleys in a remote region of Pakistan. They have lighter skin than non-Kalash people, and some claim to be descendants of the soldiers of the Army of Alexander the Great, a Macedonian king who had an empire stretching from Greece to India. reddit.com/gallery/o1b02b

Macedonians, what do you think of this ethnic group?

Gotten from Wikipedia in Macedonian because there's no mention in the English article

Which are the most diverse European ethnic groups in your experience?

I mean genetically ofc, here are my observations.

1)Greeks: Greeks have people ranging from almost Cypriot like on some islands, to people who are almost like Macedonians on some parts of the mainland, there are also Pontic Greeks who cluster with Armenians, overall, Greeks are an extremely diverse ethnic group.

2)Italians:They range from Jewish like in the far south to Swiss like in the far north, if we also include Sardininas as Italian the gentic diversity gets even larger, very diverse ethnic group overall.

  1. French: Most people know that France has people of many different backgrounds but even its indigenous population is very diverse, people in the NW of France cluster with people from the UK while people from Corsica cluster with Central Italy, now perhaps you could say that some of these people are not ethnically French, and maube you’d be right but nonetheless the people i am talking about all are native to French lands.

  2. Poles: Polish people are surprisingly heterogeneous genetically, having seen many Polish results on different calculators it seems like they range from Czech like to Belarusian like, if we take into account Poles who are not from modern day Poland the diversity increases even more, some Poles from the Baltic countries being genetically indistinguishable from Lithuanians while others from SW Ukraine in the Carpathian region being almost as southern as Hungarians genetically

  3. Germans: Ethnic Germans are not genetically homogeneous, i have seen many results from Germany and they range from Danish like in Northern Germany to Czech like in Eastern Germany

  4. Russians: Ethnic Russians truly vary, some of them being pure Slavs and being no different from Belarusians or eastern Ukrainians while other seem to be the descendants of Slavicized Finnic populations, there are also Russians from near the Baltic countries who are heavily Baltic genetically

  5. Ukrainians: I have personally seen a great deal of genetic variety in Ukrainian people, running them on calculators the ones from near the Carpathians are often as southern shifted as Slovaks while on the other extreme end the ones from Eastern Ukraine seem to be almost fully Slavic and cluster with SW Russians and Belarusians

  6. Lithuanians: This one is probably unexpected, personally i have seen DNA results of Lithuanians people being very varied, some from southern Lithuania were no different from Bealrusians while other in the far north of the country were very nor

Is anyone else a second generation immigrant that feels like they don’t belong in their original ethnic group or Canadian ethnic groups?

I’m a second generation Korean Canadian as in, I was born in south Korea but my parents moved our family to Toronto around 20 years ago. I spent a total of two to three years in South Korea and I have not been able to receive a formal Korean education. This means that I’ve learned what little I know about Korean language and culture from my parents. This wasn’t much however, as my parents were too busy trying to survive to really pass down any sort of culture or knowledge related to our heritage. As a younger kid I really struggled with my identity because I was different from all the other kids and I didn’t know why. I also lived in a predominantly Chinese part of Toronto so by hanging out with them so much I began to absorb more Chinese culture and by living in a western city, western culture as well. But the truth is, I was always the odd one out because I didn’t know Chinese or western etiquette. Yet, any Korean people I met seemed to judge me for my crappy Korean or for not knowing Korean mannerisms. Because of this I desperately tried to shun the Korean side of myself and tried to act as white as possible or as Chinese as possible. As I’ve grown older My desire to reconnect with my heritage has grown but it’s proving difficult in Toronto.

I just wanted to see if anybody else in Toronto has experienced the same.

Edit: I meant first generation. Thank you for the corrections but I can’t change the post title.

The Soviet Union had various programs and policies intending to protect and promote minority ethnic and culture groups. Did they work? Or was there also de facto or de jure Russification happening at the same time, particularly in the East?

While I'm interested in the subject broadly, I'm particularly thinking of eastern culture and linguistic groups like Tungusic language communities and the various paleo-Siberian peoples. Did the USSR care about protecting their cultural heritage? Most of these people are monolingual Russian speakers today. Did their linguistic Russification occur during the Soviet era or after?

Thanks!

TIL Han Chinese is not a distinctive ethnic group but different localities may be more closely related to other ethnicities

According to this study, they did genetic testing on different ethnicities within East Asia through Microsatellites loci and it looks like Han Chinese is not a single group.

>The phylogeny based on 30 microsatellites (Fig. (Fig.11A) revealed a clear distinction between southern and northern Chinese populations, although the number of Chinese populations included in this phylogeny is small. Three northern Chinese populations clustered with the Japanese and Korean as expected. The southern populations in this phylogeny are not representative because three of the five southern populations are Taiwanese Aborigines speaking Austronesian languages. However, this phylogeny provides validation for our current approach, given the fact that the relationship among worldwide populations is identical to that presented in Bowcock et al. (8). The latter was derived by using a completely different set of markers, but some populations analyzed in this study were included in Bowcock et al. (Cambodian, Karitiana, Mayan, Australian, New Guinean, Italian, Zaire Pygmy, Central Republic Pygmy, and Lissongo). Populations from East Asia form a distinctive cluster indicating a common ancestry shared among those groups. Taiwanese Aborigines populations derived from the southern population cluster from the continent, indicating the probable origin of those populations and probably Polynesians.
>
>In Fig. Fig.11B, two clusters for the northern populations are discernible. Altaic language-speaking Buryat, Yakut, Uyghur, and Manchu clustered with the Korean and Japanese, two language isolates but closely related to Altaic. Two Han populations, one from north China and the other from Yunnan, also contributed to this cluster (cluster N1). Another Altaic language-speaking population, Ewenki, formed a cluster (cluster N2) with Tibetan, Tujia, and Hui, all of which were originally derived from the northern populations though currently living in the western part of China (21).
>
>Populations of southern origin formed three clusters. In the first south cluster (S1), Blang, an Austro-Asiatic population, grouped with Deang, Aini, Lahu, and Dai, all sampled from the

Sports that different Desi ethnic groups excel in the USA

I’ve noticed that certain Desi groups tend to do well in certain sports in the USA and other western nations

Punjabis - Basketball. Every school with a significant Desi population has a Punjabi guy who’s 6+ feet and is just cracked at ball. One of the best on the team and lights up the locker room with music.

Gujjus - Cricket. They carry the cricket culture with them when they migrate to the USA. And they hold it up well. I know a few gujju dads who have taught their kids cricket from a very young age. Unfortunately it doesn’t amount to much in this country but nevertheless they are good at cricket.

Bengalis - Soccer. My nephews team in Texas has 3 Bengali kids on varsity. Soccer is also watched a lot in Bengal, so that explains why they are good. They also seem to have agile bodies and very good in tight spaces.

Marathis - running. A Marathi kid in NJ ran a 55 meter under 7 seconds in regionals recently. Also 3 Marathi kids hold annual records for some event records in NJ and texas. It may because of the agriculture and mountainous terrain there which made the tribes fast runners.

Tamil/Telugu - volleyball and tennis. as a tamilian myself I think that us and Telugus are very technical people and that makes us good at volleyball and tennis. Those 2 sports are a lot about coordination rather than athleticism, of course being stronger helps but not a clear advantage. Also in south India tennis is very popular so that explains why our kids excel at it here.

THEORY 1: Gangstalking is part of human experimentation conducted by the state; the reason we come from all walks of life is because they need a representative sample of individuals from all socio-economic and ethnic groups to make robust conclusions for cross-sectional, longitudinal research.

THEORY 2: Those individuals involved in gangstalking are future apparatchiks being groomed for high-level positions in the govt. and corporations. Afterall, by being intimately involved in the program, you are demonstrating your willingness to comply to unethical demands, and these individuals have compromising material on you.

If they do what is directed to them, they will be accepted to their dream school, have high-level posts in lucrative careers and institutions. If they refuse, they will be blacklisted or exposed.
