While completing homework I came across a video that made some sense. We form an image of ourselves not only from our own knowledge, but by our beliefs of how we are being perceived by others. To put it in 3 steps it would be:
- How do I appear to others?
- What must they think of me?
- (revise how we think about ourselves) develop feelings of ourselves based on our impressions of their impressions and evaluations of us
It would be important to know that we are not being influenced by the opinions of others, but what we imagine the opinions of other people to be. So we develop ideas of ourselves based on correct and incorrect perceptions of what we think other people think about us.
In Japan they have a similar diagnosis to ASD with two hallmarks:
- Fear of embarrassing oneself and
- fear of offending others
For me those are two huge concerns. That and misreading social situations makes me think people think all kinds of things about me.

I am who I think you think I am. When I met you, both of our partners were trash. The way we interacted I thought it was flirting. An escape from our home life. I used this idea that you were in flirting with me to build an idea in my head that you thought I was attractive. I like this feeling. I built a whole life around this perspective. I became confident and charismatic instead of sleepy and just existing.
Now I find that you don't find me attractive and it's hard to wrap my head around how to act around you. Because in my head I'm trying to save that idea of who I am. You seem to be protecting my ego a little bit too.
I found that other people don't see me in this light that I'm trying to preserve. So I feel this reality that I have constructed for myself fading away. It makes me feel like I am in this role that they put me in.
But I don't have to be who you think I am or who they think. I want to live this lie that I am attractive enough for a girl like you until it becomes real. It doesn't have to be you. Just a woman on your level. I have made a few changes to be this person. I just need to keep going.
I'm aware douchebags do this for an inflated self importance. So how does this make me different from them. Why is being physically attractive important? I mean it doesn't hurt. I am a sum of my interactions with people. I haven't had enough of that kind of attention to be put in that box.
Alice Through the Looking Glass is one of my favorite books and Im obsessed with all things Wonderland and I freaked when I saw all the Wonderland references in the video. This video is a masterpiece.

i cannot find this quote for the life me- i saw it somewhat recently posted but cannot find the full quote somehow. It's a relevant quote to both today's influx of photographers and back in the day of glass plate photographers being the only ones and then the growth of photographers thanks to film. if this sounds familiar to anyone, thank you!
