A list of puns related to "List of sports clichés"
I can say that the Rocky films are increasingly influential and powerful on their themes even though they are the ones that mostly invented the clichés that we see in many sports films today (and it also has less favourable films like Rocky 3 to 5).
But I decided not to delve into this because I think that it is pretty obvious.
But after seeing the film 'Warrior' again, I realised what was it that really drove me to the film.
In many sports films, there is a theme of hope and motivation and inspiration for the characters who are trying to fight against the odds to climb through the ranks and overcome their obstacles, whether sports related or in their personal lives, and achieve their goals.
We are mostly aimed to support these characters and hope that they achieve their goals which they often do or are close to achieving them.
In this film, the structure is slightly different and the characters are portrayed in ways that appear more believable and complex. And in truth, the film stars two characters who are brothers and are both aiming for the same goal and both have a past that they still struggle with.
They both come from an abusive background whose father was recently learned to let go of the past and trying to make emands which also adds to the complexity of this character do because he knows that he did wrong but he is not sure if he also deserves a second chance.
Both brothers are fighting for believable means and not for personal gain. They are quite literally fighting for their lives, one because he does not want to lose his house, the other to give a person the money that he promised because his Marine colleague was killed in action and he is also on AWOL and trying to hide from the military police.
Both characters show complexities and you are not sure who to root for to get the prize money.
Yes, you have to suspend your belief that they managed to beat actual MMA athletes who literally have years of experience (then again, the characters have experience in this sport too). At the same time, the parallels between the struggles of the MMA sport and the struggles in real life, they feel quite real and a relatable theme about pushing through and overcoming obstacles but at the same time, not all obstacles can be that easy or possible to beat which relates to real life
Legal drama= has a young and/or inexperienced lawyer where the judge will allow him to make mistakes and will let the older and more experienced lawyer on the other side beat him up until the young lawyer finds his courage.
Here are a list of common tropes and clichés that I can think about and are annoying in my opinion. I may update this list in the future if I think about more and if I feel like it. You are welcome to add upon this list below.
I love me some action, and yet there are a bunch of things that seem like they're all over the genre that are just fucking stupid and bug me every time I see them. I'm not talking plot tropes or anything like that, I'm talking more isolated and, especially, technical things here.
Character fires last round of a mag, slide locks back, and they turn the gun to the side for a second to look at it, like the slide position doesn't tell them it's fucking empty.
Team enters an area and during their visual scan, they're literally aiming all over the goddamn place, even in the direction of their own teammates and other directions that they know no possible threat would be coming from. As though the actors were given such little direction in the scene "yeah, I want you scurry in here and just start pointing your gun in every conceivable random direction, that will convince people you know what you're doing."
Character points a gun at someone, then has a bit of dialog, and then, at some point, cocks the gun.
People repeatedly racking empty shotguns in scenes where they are preparing their weapons for an upcoming shootout.
Gun fights where the protagonist is besieged by other gunfighters... running at them, apparently under the impression that a gun is a melee weapon. This shit is all over the John Wick movies, but those are by no means the only offenders.
It's hard to unsee this type of shit once you notice it. There's way more, I just couldn't immediately think of it. I'm curious to see what else you nerds have noticed.
Feel free to make your own additions! :P
I've recently had the idea of writing a wuxia/xianxia novel floating around in my head, one specifically designed to subvert the most hated clichés of the genre and to rationalize common tropes where possible, all while staying true to its roots.
To that end I would like to make a list of said cliches (specially those you hate), editing the post so as to make as extensive a list as possible. I'll start off with some that I can say off the top of my head:
I read this subreddit from time to time and I find it is always generally full of the same type of posts.
I thought it might be amusing to make a list of the most common types. Post comments and i'll compile it all into a formal list for reference.
(also clichéd responses to comments within a post are welcome)
I'll start.
Whenever there's an NCAA violation of any kind, it's always Mizzou's fault
You know them.
You know them all.
By heart and by rote!
We joke about them.
These substitute for conversation within SGI, where people simply repeat them at each other in sequence.
It's time to MAKE THE LIST!!!
I'll start - in no particular order (we can rearrange it later):
Okay - YOUR turn!!
Came across a reference to this dataset in a paper and thought it was an interesting find. The paper had used this dataset as a feature for detecting computer-generated text, but there are probably other interesting things that might be done with it.
The original list can be found here. It's a fairly old website, but it's still working at the time of writing.
I've made a computer-ready copy without HTML formatting available on GitHub here.
inspired by bad moon rising 2 i decided to compile a list of all of the most overused cliches used in commentary. i have also made a bingo board out of this that you can check out here so you can host super cool melee viewing parties with lots of alcohol and play bingo:
(whenever someone is down a stock) “he needs this stock to come back”
(whenever someone is down a stock pt 2) “it’s still doable”
(whenever someone is up a stock) “he has SO much momentum right now”
(whenever westballz is playing) “you know, contrary to popular belief, westballz is actually a very DEFENSIVE player” “wow really i did not hear that before” -> someone who has heard that before
“Nice (move)”
(whenever someone is playing ice climbers and nana dies) “you know, chudat is one of the best sopos alongside fly amanita, let’s see what he can do”
“He read him like a (reference to anything literature related)”
“oops! Commentator’s curse haHahhahaHha oOpS!”
“One stock is not a lead!”
(whenever someone gets hit by fox up-b) “sakurai!!” “-forced laughter from other guy-”
"you know, (move) has only (made up frame data) amount of frames" "wow really?" -> doesn't seem right but won't contest it for the sake of the stream
(whenever a falcon is behind) "but you know, falcon can take a HIT"
(character gets hit off stage and is about to die) "ohhhhh that's it" (character lives) "omg he lived!"
(any ditto) "this matchup is SO volatile, anything can happen"
if i'm missing something please let me know so i can make a 5x5 bingo board thanks for your time
Apologies if this has already been posted but I didn't see it. Full quote below.
> Interviewer: I texted you Saturday morning and I said, dude there are people on TV sobbing that you're back, what does that mean to you when you see the outpouring of affection for you? > > CM Punk: I'm a Chicago guy, I'm a Chicago sports guy. I cried when the Cubs won the World Series. I cried when the Blackhawks won the Cup. (The time I was alive when they won the cup, not back in the 60's.) You know, it means a lot and I think it means a lot because I'm so attached to Chicago and sports especially, you know. I understand. So anybody making fun of that dude, yeah you're making fun of me too, you know, like there's nothing wrong with being emotional at sporting events or anything you like, you know? Like, I'll cry at a Marvel movie!

It's a cliché for a reason. I can easily name a dozen examples off the top of my head where the book was better than the movie. I realized though that I've never read a book that was adapted into a movie where I enjoyed the movie more. I'm curious if anyone has an example that goes against the norm. Obviously this would only be your opinion.
Edit: remind me to never make a post that could possibly get over 4k replies again. My poor inbox.

The Rocky series is pretty straight forward. They created themes that we commonly see in sports films about inspiration, persistence and grit and spirit and they inspired many people.
The theme of an average citizen or even a nobody can still achieve what he is aiming for if he works hard enough, then anybody can. It is a classic American dream story.
Yes, in the first film, Rocky was lucky that he was picked by Creed but at the same time, few people believed in him but he pushed through. Not even he believed that he can achieve what he wanted to achieve but his aim was to 'go the distance'.
And the story of the first film truly reflects on Stallone's story before the Rocky series took off as the legend goes that he sold his dog to earn money to produce the film and wrote the script in only a few days (he got the dog back, at least that is what the internet says).
And the themes of struggle and persistence cab also be reflected to Rocky's personal life which can be reflected to that of the audience - such as Rocky struggling with his occupation and future, trying to woo Adrian and confront her slightly difficult brother, tackling self-doubt and learning how to tackle life issues effectively such as whether to punch through or use delegation as Rocky is known as a humble man even though he is a fighter.
And as the series continues, so do its characters like Rocky wanting a personal life with Adrian, slowly learning how to read and earn a decent education and overcoming other struggles.
Yes, the third, fourth and fifth films were the ones where the series took a different turn and probably embraced the cheesy and cliche nature of the films like Rocky running on the seaside with Creed in slow motion or the training montage in Rocky 4.
But even after that, the series continued to evolve like Rocky being much older in Rocky 6 and having to come to terms that things in life do not last forever. He is happy but still as human and struggled with loss and grief such as his wife's death and being estranged from his son. But he wanted one last chance to push through once again.
And in the Creed films, we see Rocky transitioning through the struggles of life such as being estranged from his son again and dealing with cancer while being a mentor to Creed's son but making sure that he does not do the same mistakes that Creed or Rocky did.
The themes in this series is common and take the form of many shapes. But at the same time, the theme of fighting and the e
