A list of puns related to "List of severe weather phenomena"
Hi all, I am putting together a resource/contact list for quick reference in severe weather or emergency situations. I would like to know if you have any recommendations to add? Twitter handles, websites, phone numbers of places and services that maybe you found helpful in the Feb Freeze?
I am happy to share with all contributors once it is done!
Here's all the ones I can think of:
-Wear shoes if a tornado warning is issued. You may need to walk through debris if a tornado strikes. -When severe weather capable of producing tornadoes is approaching, keep your phone charged and have a weather radio ready. If you own a battery pack that will be incredibly useful. -A flashlight is a useful tool to keep on you in the event that the power goes out, or if you have to sift through debris. -A helmet, while ridiculous to wear indoors, could be a potentially life-saving thing to have if a tornado strikes. Falling debris can easily kill with a strike to the head. -Don't open your windows to "balance the air" if a tornado is likely. You're creating a wind tunnel for your home, and that's also a myth. -Avoid any area with windows -If you don't have a basement or underground shelter, the bathroom is the next best spot. Bathrooms are surrounded by strong pipes that a forged into the ground. Lay in the bath tub with pillows over yourself -If you're on the road, the worst place you can hide is in a highway underpass. The wind will suck you out and easily kill you. Lay face-down in a ditch with your hands covering your head. If possible, get to a nearby public building where shelter can be provided. -Don't ever leave your house to try and outrun a tornado. A lot of people get the same idea and this can lead to a crowded highway and possible grid lock. You're only putting yourself in more danger. -If you see a tornado, call 911 and report it's exact location as best as you can. -If a tornado doesn't appear to be moving, it is likely moving away or moving directly towards you. Always assume the latter for your own safety.
Inspired by this thread on how TWC handled last weekโs tornado outbreak, Hereโs my own thoughts on TWC. This is going to be a lengthy post, but please bear with me.
TWC claims to care greatly about peopleโs safety. But yet, they run endless commercials during severe weather coverage. They play suspenseful music during transitions and when they cover severe weather events, their meteorologists are needlessly overdramatic and are constantly fear mongering regardless of how major or marginal it is.
For example, when they covered the tornado outbreak on Easter of last year, All of TWCโs meteorologists were very overdramatic and kept on fear mongering and overhyping everything the whole night of the Easter outbreak, especially Jim Cantore. I remember Cantore saying that Greg Postel called him and told him that the dewpoint at his house was 70 and that it started at 43 that morning. Cantore then said โThatโs a TREMENDOUS amount of low level moisture thatโs come northโ. I also remember Rick Knabb telling Georgia, โThis COULD BE one of the most SIGNIFICANT severe weather events youโve had in the last 2-3 yearsโ. And when they covered the tornado outbreak that happened on March 25th of 2021, when Mike Bettes was covering this outbreak, he was being VERY overdramatic and was literally screaming at people to take shelter.
Aside from fear mongering, they canโt just present data and information from the NWS/NOAA as it is, they have to manipulate and customize it to the point where it can confuse people. For example, their TORCON, them naming winter storms and them changing the colors of the SPCโs marginal and slight risk categories from green and yellow to two different shades of bright red. Thereโs even been occasions where run one of their crappy reality shows/documentaries DURING major weather events like they did last Friday.
The online version of TWC is also no better as they constantly run endless ads to try to get you to sign up for their โPremiumโ service.
All of these factors leads me to believe that TWC is essentially placing their profits and ratings ahead of public safety. If they did non-stop coverage instead of running their really shows, more lives wouldโve been saved. If they claim to care about peopleโs safety, then they wouldnโt be running endless commercials and other programming during major w
