A list of puns related to "List of rhythm guitarists"
Yes, I know he was the only guitarist, and had aspects of both styles in his playing. But if you had to put him in one of the two categories what would it be?
been trying to find their name but couldn't seem to anywhere

You see, your typical "rhythm guitarist" is basically the guy who plays chords and sings, because playing his parts is easier to do while singing simultaneously. While the latter is sometimes true for Jimmy, he doesn't "just play chords". As a guitarist myself I gotta say that there's no other rhythm guitarist like him. Even for example James Hetfield, is only super good technically, but Jimmy is also very creative with his stuff. I find the muted syncopated staccato stuff so cool, especially back when Foals would completely disregard any fret below 12. Not to even mention that he's also a keys/synths player who's godlike at sound design (watch the FBC videos on youtube and you'll get me) so he is one hell of a musician.
Recently got asked to play lead for a band and it's not the type of thing I'm used to, the music is very vocals heavy with clean tones, apart from the solo sections (which is the only thing I'm not struggling with) the rhythm/vocalist is pretty much always singing and playing chords (up until now they were an acoustic act). Here's the thing, anything I play in those parts just seems unnecessary, I started with alternative chord voicings on a different part of the fretboard, but it just sounded like a mess, so I tried coming up with some melodies but they felt like they were clashing or distracting from the vocal melody, so then I tried just following the vocal melody and that sounded straight up bad and once again unnecessary. So far I'm just doing "twinkly" fx type stuff with a reverb and chorus pedal, pinging away on octaves and arpeggios and stuff, it's alright but if I'm honest it still feels like the songs don't actually need it. Anyone got any other ideas for what I can do with songs like this?
Update: Thanks for all the help! :) I'm definitely feeling more confident in what I'm going to play
The best lead guitarist ever is definitely debatable and Kirk is for sure up there, but has there/is there a better rhythm guitarist than James? The shit he plays and sings at the same time is mind blowing to watch. That right hand is something other worldly.
There are a lot of fantastic rhythm guitarists and some of the most memorable songs are memorable for their chord progressions and rhythm guitar playing. That being said, I've found that when discussing and ranking the greatest guitarists, there's a huge emphasis on lead playing. The solo is treated as the true test of guitar chops and the less ostentatious aspects of their play is ignored. With certain artists, they're viewed only as singer songwriters and the fact that they're also guitarists is at best an afterthought. Yet a lot of their accompaniment is more than just backing music. Even when it's not at the forefront, it's an important part of the song.
What do you think of rhythm and lead in terms of the "greatest guitarist" discussions? Is too much preference given to one over the other? And what examples of great rhythm guitarwork can stand up to the greatest solos and finger styling.
So my band, 31 Nights (Iβll link to our sampler video) is looking to add two new members. Right now we have drums, bass, and lead guitar. Weβre interested in adding a rhythm guitarist and a keyboardist! If you can sing in addition to playing one of those instruments, thatβs good too! All three of us sing! If you can play other instruments in addition to one of those two, thatβs good too!
If interested, comment here and send me a message! We rehearse in Bellevue WA!
Thanks and hereβs our sampler video!

I am a 27 yr old black female, rhythm guitar player, looking for players around the same age to start or join a jam/cover band (with goal of playing live one day). I've been playing for about a year now. I am solid on rhythm acoustic and can feel comfortable with backing vocals. I own a bass and electric guitar as well, (though not currently as solid). I'm interested in playing with beginner, intermediate and/or advanced players to better my skills and bounce ideas off of. I'm good a improvising over sounds and can learn most things by ear. My ideal band is influenced by classic loose sounds especially in the 60s-70s and early second wave Indie bands of the 2010s. Some of my favorite bands are the Kooks, the Rolling Stones, Modest Mouse, the Drums, The kinks, Otis Redding, Alabama Shakes. More recent influences, TV Girl, The Paper kites, SALES, Parcel.
I appreciate classic French films, 60s pop culture and art.
Let me know if you'd like more info. Drop me a message if you're interested.
I am a bassist, producer, and singer putting together an originals band in Philly to gig and record, inspired by artists like Howlin' Wolf & Muddy Waters, as well as 60βs bands like the Doors, Janis Joplin/Big Brother, & the Yardbirds. Also willing to experiment with other genres. Looking to practice once a week once safety levels are higher.
Looking for a keyboardist, pianist, or organist, and a guitarist to play along with myself, a drummer, and another guitarist. Once COVID levels are back to a reasonable level, the plan is to practice and start recording covers and original material, as well as get to know each other, before actively seeking gigs within a few months around Philadelphia. I will also rent a rehearsal space and can provide recording equipment.
If you are interested, please message me with a little bit about yourself, what music you are into, and what you would hope to get out of this.
It's funny which musician's deaths hit you. I suppose this one in particular gets me down because it emphasises the fragility of the Dolls' legacy. With the exception of frontman David Johansen, all original members are now gone. And with their legacy never blossoming the way of fellow commercial failures Ramones and the Velvet Underground, they're a step closer to disappearing into history's ether. When Spotify shows you've got less than half as many listeners as The Replacements, things aren't looking good.
This doesn't change the fact that the Dolls were a seminal, prophetic and wildly influential band. And you can hear Sylvain's motoring guitar driving both their debut and its even more underrated sequel. Johnny Thunders was a genius, but his anarchic lead needed a platform to jump from: Syl gave him that. RIP.
Johansen gave a rare interview on Sylvain's death in Rolling Stone, worth a read if you're a fan of this spectacular band: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/david-johansen-sylvain-sylvain-1115612/amp/
I play rhythm guitar in a popular tribute band. I have ONE patch, and I just clean it up when needed by rolling off the guitar volume knob. I play direct, no amplifier. In the past I used a Vox Tonelab but it never really sounded good. I tried a Sansamp 2 but it also sounded crappy. For a while I lugged around a Headrush Pedalboard which sounded fantastic but it was too big for a single patch. (I also play keyboard so I have enough gear to deal with already.) Now I'm using a Strymon Iridium but I have to carry it on a pedalboard to supplement with a tuner and a DI box. I've begun looking at a Fly Rig and the latest Headrush MX5, but like I said, I'm really a one-patch guy in need of a good pop rock middleweight overdrive guitar tone.
Any suggestions? Requirements: Direct XLR out (or TRS with XLR adapter). Built in tuner. Great tone. As small as possible.
I think the header says it all. Iβm 26 years old, Iβm a bartender, very laid back guy, and this is something that Iβve wanted to do for a very long time. Comment or DM if interested. (:
Hello, I am seeking a two people with a few years of experience as a lead or rhythm. Preferably someone who has had experience playing live. I am in a rock cover band, we usually practise 1-2 times a week. We try to get as much practise in as we can before we meet up and jam, this makes the jams much more enjoyable and has a feeling of accomplishment. Please shoot me a message if you live in the Gold Coast area of Qld for more information you may be curious about. Thank you! And rock on \m/
Previous guitarist had to drop due to school projects. Song being covered is βJubilee Lineβ by Wilbur Soot. To be released on Christmas as part of a bigger project.

20 years old from Southside looking for people to jam with. I listen to and love every kind of music blues/rock/folk/metal/grunge but open to anything. Some of my main influences are anything Chris Cornell, Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Pantera, The black keys, Ozzy, etc. Prefer to play with people around my age

No pretentious bs its aggressive music but some of almy songs aren't completely metal etc. Please msg me if you want to try out and are in carbon count pa or close to Jim Thorpe pa
In a lot of ways I feel like the true depth and breath of Princeβs catalogue is still being discovered, and appreciated by a wider audience, there is more to his soloing and lead playing then that same Rock Hall of Fame video that gets posted ad nauseam.
But if thatβs underappreciated then I donβt even know what to call his skills as a rhythm guitarist. Songs like Controversy, 1999, I Wanna Be Your Lover, and his work as a session guitarist on the Minneapolis scene is freaking incredible.
Only master of rhythm could have written a hook as good as Kiss or Letβs Go Crazy. You definitely hear the Freddie Stone influence on him when you listen to his Rhythm parts.
What do you guys think?
Whatβs some of your favorite examples of Princeβs skills as a rhythm player?
Who do you hear in his influences?
Chris can write some excellent melodies and chord progressions, but was wondering how does he compare to other musicians like Thom Yorke or Matt Bellamy technically?
Concrete - would be fun to play in person
Oh Yeah, You Gonna Cry? - the rhythm is amazing
Model Buses - this song is very smooth in my opinion
Taunt - love the mix of the guitar and bass throughout the song
Itβs All Futile! Itβs All Pointless! - cannot beat the original and I cannot wait for this live because I will be there
Youβll Understand When Youβre Older - very underrated and should be way more popular like the next one
Cause for Concern - underrated just like the one above
The Fall - very very good but way way to overrated
Sex Sells -Im trying to pick up the trumpets and this is one of my main goals
Perfume - same as The Fall very overrated
One Day a classic but its not something i could listen to while doing school work and stuff
but in the end all of them are amazing and definitely at the top of my spotify wrapped this year and most likely the next ones
also if any of the band members see this id want to know your favorites.
The reason I ask this is because Iβve heard that guitarists are a dime a dozen and was wondering whether the said could be said for rhythm guitarists. My plan was to originally learn bass but I donβt really like the sound. In a group setting itβs cool and it helps a group of musicians sound cooler but alone it just kinda sounds meh imo. Should I force myself to learn bass so I wonβt have to compete a lot with others or should I learn rhythm guitar?
.. Mattallica. Must be willing to record their part for the following songs; MATTster Of Puppets, MATTery, Nothing Else MATTers, MATTorbreath, MATTal Militia, and The Thing MATT Should Not Be.
Iβm the rhythm guitarist in my band and Iβm wondering if rhythm players can take solos, because Iβm sick of the lead guitarist always showing off and being egotistical. He just wanks through some licks and overdoes it. Whatβs more? He said I canβt solo cuz Iβm rhythm and I just have to stick to chords and riffs and heβll take all the lead work. I feel it is unfair. Is it true that rhythm guitarists must hold the low end? Or can we rhythm guitarists play solos too? Any options that me and the lead guy can work with?
