This is something that's been on my mind for a while now, and I wanted to share it.
For context, I regularly watch YouTube videos related to video game news, reviews, let's plays, that sort of stuff. However, since Desmond's passing, I've been feeling that something has been missing from my daily routine. Something exciting.
I really miss either tuning into Etika's livestreams on YouTube or feverishly anticipating for good ol' Jon (jade[d]) to upload a VOD that usually consisted of the entire livestream(s) because I had become accustomed to watching Etika's content in that particular format after watching highlights of his streams from ARORA and im salt.
About a week after I found out about the unfortunate news, I went back to jade[d]'s channel and tried to finish where I left off on an archived livestream, but I couldn't look at Desmond the same anymore. I watched for about an hour, then headed to bed. I haven't watched any of the VODs since.
I only wish right now that I could have flown to New York City sometime around late June of this year and hang out and talk with Etika about his internal conflicts (I'm a Psychology major and hope to become a Marriage/Family therapist), but at the time, I was in a lot of credit card debt (and still am) because of "miscellaneous fees" my uni started charging me for starting in my third year.
Now, whenever I get onto YouTube and watch the latest uploads from channels whose videos I regularly watch, it doesn't generate that much excitement for me as it did when Desmond was still alive. It's a strange feeling..
Thatβs all. If anyone can relate itβd be somebody on this sub. π
I recently finished playing brotherhood ( I played AC1 then 2 then brotherhood, and these are the only games I played ). Im slowly getting kinda lost in all the pieces od eden, temples and the shiny chick speaking nonse. So is there any recap of just Desmond's story?
Thank you.
The ceremonies and celebrations for the wedding were as to the competitions. Small, yet expensive. Only a few had shown up for the melee and tourney, but a few was fine, it was the cost that worried Roslyn. 50 gold dragons were to be handed out to both winners. Her uncle had told her a tourney was nothing without a good reward, but she hardly thought 100 dragons was reasonable.
Nonetheless, it was too late to go back.
Some AC fans are a fan of the modern day arcs and some are simply not. Some are fans of Desmond Miles and his story and some are definitely not. Regardless off which camp you reside in, I just want to say one thing:
No one likes the current modern day arc or are indifferent to it. Ever since Desmond died, the modern day portions went downhill. At least with Desmond, all AC games were connected. Desmond Miles as the protagonist made sense because he was special, simply because of his heritage full of skilled Assassins and because of the significant amount of Isu blood inside him. There werenβt enough Modern Day sections to fully develop his character the way it was developed with beloved Assassins like Ezio, Edward, and AltaΓ―r. And the modern day gameplay is only boring because Ubisoft didnβt give enough effort to make a worthwhile modern day experience the way the rest of the AC games were. Hell, they still donβt with the silent unnamed protagonists and Layla.
But regardless of where you stand, we can all agree that the modern day sections and story went downhill after Desmonds death. And at least with him, the AC community wasnβt as displeased as they are now. I feel like Desmond deserves a second chance and be able to return as the seriesβ Modern Day Protagonist.
Thereβs a pretty big love of Locke for how cool and elaborate of a character he was, but Desmond?
Dude was a ex-monk who was just trying to beat Charles Widmore at a race around the world so he can get back with the love of his life, Penny.
He then crash lands on the island, spends 3 years pushing a button in a bunker to save the fucking world.
Comes back to blow up the hatch and gains some time travel powers. The whole scene with him going back in time and talking with Eloise as she explains what is happening is what made LOST so intriguing too me.
He now has a huge burden on his shoulders to save Charlie from his constant death. Iβd argue the two best LOST episodes weβre Through the Looking Glass and The Constant, where Desmond probably shined the most.
After that thereβs obviously the Constant which again is one of the best 40~ minutes of TV Iβve ever watched.
Him in the flash-sideways where his job is to bring everyone together was beautiful, the fact that the βisland wasnβt done with himβ and he was the last person Jack ever spoke too before he sacrificed himself.
At the end of AC3 Desmond had a choice keep Juno trapped by allowing the solar flare to devastate Earth and then lead the survivors as a messianic figure or sacrifice himself to activate the "Isu ozone" and protect Earth from the flare but allow Juno to go free. As we know Desmond chose the second option trusting in his fellow Assassins to be able to handle the threat Juno would pose. But how much of that was influenced either consciously or subconsciously by having just relived Connor's memories.
I think most of us would agree that Connor is the most self-sacrificing character we've played as and I think the freshness of that personality possibly even due to slight bleed effect might have guided Desmond in his ultimate action. If Desmond had been given the same choice right after relieving Ezio's memories or had had another person's after Connor's so they weren't as fresh Desmond might have made a different decision.

To get right into it:
I fell asleep pretty early one night a few nights ago, and I barely remember what happened in the dream or what led to it, but I know Des was in it. After posting that video, he decided against taking his own life. He was found walking the streets of NYC, and life went back to normal. People came back into his life, and he was so happy again. I dunno. He was back to streaming per usual, and so on so forth. He was happy.
I woke up that following morning, so blissfully unaware that I dreamt, and I was beyond happy. Then reality came crushing me down, and I felt destroyed.
I miss him so bad.
Czar Chasm.
People call it out for being too big of a departure from normal AC content during that point in time, but for me it provided context and closure. In fact, those six short puzzle maps had better writing than the entirety of Unity, Syndicate, and Odyssey combined.
Itβs just Desmond alone, working through a computer-generated reflection program, considering his place in this larger struggle between Assassins and Templars. Trying to justify the things heβd done, the way he was stuck in disbelief, wanting to escape a place that to him felt stifling and dogmatic.
How he had never been given a choice in this ancient war, that the words of the Creed were constantly drilled into him without his consent or understanding. And for a short while, his escape from the Assassin order was pure bliss, a paradise of freedom compared to his old life.
But when the Templars came for him, his life came into focus sharply for the first time. He realized that the stories his mother and father had told him were all true, and that he had a role to play in this struggle.
The last words he says at the end of the program are:
βMy name is Desmond Miles. And I am an Assassin.β
Powerful stuff. No side quest nonsense, no vapid half-baked appeals to historical figures or the grand fight. Just one dude, trying to find himself in the chaos and make sense of everything. And at the end of it all, embracing that chaos by reaffirming his position in the world.
It made a full circle back to what Altair had said to Al Mualim.
βDo you regret this life?β
βHow can I regret the only life I have ever known?β
Rest in peace, Desmond. Letβs hope Ubisoft has the sense to leave your memory alone, instead of violating and resuscitating your dead corpse for future plot contrivances.
So, we all remember shitting our pants with the ending to AC II when Minerva warns Desmond of the impending 2nd Solar Flare. But then we learn in III that the using the Eye and protecting the Earth from said Flare releases Juno. Which Minerva is ostensibly against. So, why the fuck would she warn Desmond in II if she didn't want Juno released? Wouldn't it have been more prudent to just not warn Desmond through Ezio?
When we last left the side of renowned and loved silent film director William Desmond Taylor, he was lying dead on the floor of his bungalow and his valet was shrieking for someone--anyone--to help. Little did the valet know that "help" would indeed come, but the only people being helped were the ones who hired William Desmond Taylor to clean up the tarnished image Hollywood had earned for itself.
In the second part of our epic story involving the unsolved murder of William Desmond Taylor, as well as the greatest cover-up in Hollywood's relatively short history that followed it up and set the scene for the next century, we'll be looking not just at the crime scene and the shenanigans that occurred there, thanks to Taylor's employers, but also the LAPD's primary theory of who killed Taylor and why that's most likely wrong. Then we'll look at all three major accounts that have been explored in our main secondary sources of who could have done it and who was responsible.
We'll dive into the life of an obsessed teenage girl and her wicked stage mother and the political powers that protected them, the enraged drug dealers and an actress struggling with an addiction to their product, the failed actors and filmmakers who moonlighted as bottom-feeding petty criminals, and the powerful moguls who loomed over it all and made it impossible for Hollywood to ever be the same again; all in the epic conclusion of History Impossible's The Great Hollywood Coverup.
I still can't believe this happened to him :(
