A list of puns related to "List of heat waves"
Physical damages caused by heatwaves are much harder to assess than those caused, for instance, by floods or hurricanes. As a result, they are often poorly reported and underestimated. I try to get a sense of how much last week heat disrupted local activities and damaged physical assets. I think it can be useful to better prepare for such events in the future.
So far, I found:
Electricity: load shedding in Spokane, power cuts in Portland area, Seattle area and in British Columbia. Huge increase of electricity prices (+435%).
Roads: roads damaged by heat in Seattle, damages on the I5, State Route 544, Highway 195
Transports: light rail service totally suspended in Portland, disruption of air travel
Food and distribution: Cold storage malfunction, employees walkout
Indirect impacts: flood due to snowmelt increase, fires, high pollution episode in [Vancouver](https://bc.ctvnews.ca/metro-vancouver-expands-air-quality-advisory-warns-of-fine-particulate-and-ground-
...then oh god he is not ready for finding out how this song got popular
Listening to NPRβs All Songs Considered today about Montero being awarded NPRβs song of the year, and the host asked Lil Nas X about his top songs of the year. He had to think for a minute, but the first song he said was Heat Waves! Pretty cool to get that shoutout from one of the hottest artists of the year, even if it is a year late haha
This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 70%. (I'm a bot)
> MADRID - Japan was ranked at the top of the list of affected countries as worsening heat waves take a heavier toll on nations, both rich and poor, according to an annual ranking that measures the damage done by extreme weather to human life and economies.
> The Global Climate Risk Index, published on Wednesday by environmental think tank Germanwatch, rated Japan as the most weather-affected country in 2018, hit by a triple whammy of extreme summer heat, torrential rainfall and a powerful typhoon.
> Powerful storms left a trail of destruction in 2018, with the Philippines second in the climate risk index due to large losses inflicted by top-strength Typhoon Mangkhut.
> Laura Schaefer, a policy adviser with Germanwatch, told journalists at the U.N. climate talks in Madrid that the index results showed that the "Signs of climate crisis," on all continents, could no longer be ignored.
> "But climate impacts most existentially hit developing countries and communities around the world - and create a real climate crisis for millions of people," she said, adding that the poor had the fewest resources to cope.
> At the U.N. climate talks on Wednesday, Chile's environment minister, who is presiding over the conference, and U.N. climate chief Patricia Espinosa told journalists Latin American nations were vulnerable to weather disasters fueled by climate change, highlighting the need for them to become more resilient.

Quick post this time. The host's husband at my current stay (private room in house shared with hosts ) advised that the air conditioning wasn't working. Something about a part that's defective. He can fix things. He said he ordered the part, it's on back order and will try to reach an HVAC technician today but likely won't get an appointment until next week. Should I ask for a discount, partial refund? The communication by the host's husband is good in this case but it's a hassle to have to rely on a fan and of course a fan is not as soothing and effective as cool a/c air.
Would you mention this in the review that a listed amenity was n/a or broken during the stay? Also what can I do? It's late spring and heat waves are expected to continue as summer approaches.
EDIT: The a/c hasn't worked for 4 days. The host's husband kept me updated and advised a repairman is coming today, day 4, but no discount offered. I have an ongoing dispute (see my other thread), so I won't even request compensation for this.
There were reports of large sharks seen swarming the coasts of NJ and NYC by sea captains prior to the attacks, which were dismissed. I have heard rumors that bodies of dead WWI soldiers were dumped in the ocean which gave sharks a taste for human flesh.
Is there any truth to any of this, or is the shear number of people driven into the water by the heat wave generally believed to be the culprit?
