Why do we look at older history based around centuries and millennia, but look at modern history based around decades and years?

I get that we're able to keep track of events easier in modern times, so we can record history on a much more frequent basis, but was there really that little happening hundreds to thousands of years ago that we only remembered select, infrequent events?
