Why do we look at older history based around centuries and millennia, but look at modern history based around decades and years?
I get that we're able to keep track of events easier in modern times, so we can record history on a much more frequent basis, but was there really that little happening hundreds to thousands of years ago that we only remembered select, infrequent events?
Things that distract us from reality are becoming smaller: millennia ago it was scrolls and tomes, centuries it was books and then newspapers, in prior decades it's cameras and cell phones, in the future we'll be walking around watching our AR displays from our smart glasses/contacts.
