A list of puns related to "List of cases of police brutality in India"
I know this might come across as an over-generalization, but it just seems that time and time again when cases come to light of extreme brutality, use of force when totally unnecessary etc, there are huge droves of Americans who seemingly feel compelled to defend the police's behaviour no matter what. One example I've noticed would be the r/PublicFreakout sub, where videos of encounters with police are frequently posted. Any comment expressing sympathy with the victim or outrage at the cops behaviour seems to get downvoted to hell and any tough guy, macho bravado type comment about how the cop was standing their ground gets tons of upvotes, even when it's clearly the cop that's in the wrong. Seems to happen more generally in American society too. Cops (almost) never get held accountable when they kill etc. Is it some sort of patriotic thing?
So I'm an Indian but I've grown up in North America. For anyone who follows the news around US/Canada, there are stories after stories about police brutality and violence - police torturing people, beating people up often for little to no good reason, or in some cases shooting and killing people for no reason (or because they assume the person is armed even if they aren't). It happens very commonly.
And yet, people in my family talk about how Indian cops are supposedly much worse/more brutal. I haven't heard much about it, though I know of someone getting arrested for social media posts or something, and I have family members who are police but they don't really talk about their job. I met an Indian immigrant coworker who said her dad was a retired policeman and I asked if he ever killed anyone, and she said he went after gangs and stuff.
However generally speaking, is due process and human rights generally respected by police in India? Are police known to get violent even for minor offenses (like traffic violations)? Do they often target civilians, or sometimes kill them like they do in the US?
