In the next iteration of Sid Meier's Civilization I would love to see the addition of bridges, artificial islands, and patrol units.
It is weird to me that the only bridge that we can use to connect land masses is the Golden Gate Bridge, a wonder that can only be built once. It would be nice to have bridges as non-specialty district improvements or simple tile improvements that can be built by builders and military engineers. Bridges can be implemented in the early game as wooden bridges and may have a timer before it is broken and have to be repaired or upgraded to a sturdier material like a stone or modern bridge. This could potentially bring more realism to the game and make island maps more enjoyable as land based civilizations.
Artificial islands is a new tile improvement that can be built in reefs (this would entail that reefs can spawn in the middle of the ocean instead of just near the coast) in the late game and can be used for economic purposes or warfare. This could bring life to the very boring and empty ocean that Civ currently has.
Artificial islands can also be used to build improvements such as an airbase. Aircrafts in airbases instead of aircraft carriers may have a bonus in their combat strength to incentivize players to build artificial islands. Airbases in artificial islands may also be used as landing space for military units when transporting from a Hangar; this creates depth and realism to the warfare usefulness of artificial islands.
Artificial islands can also be used to create a transport hub that will allow for the harvest of luxury and strategic resources that can spawn in the ocean. This will allow for more luxury resources such as whales and allow the player to get more of a resource they cannot get anymore from land.
Artificial islands can be destroyed by rising sea levels or being pillaged and building a lot of artificial islands can accelerate the growth of CO2 levels due to the reefs being destroyed.
