Okay, so I recently just watched Planet's first episode and there were some good parts and bad parts.
Live action parts: since I recently got into sentai last year and I have seen a few clips of the Girls X Heroine series, the live action parts don't really bother me too much. Sure they kinda try to ham it up to try to match their animated counterparts, but its honestly not as "cringy" once you get used to it. The actresses are pretty decent-looking too and they can move pretty well, irl. But if you're definitely new to the live-action Japanese scene, it WILL take some getting used to. This literally is a typical live-action style.
Animated/CG: by the halfway point, we get our first look into the animated world. Nothing too amazing, the world seems to be your typical wackily-designed cyberspace zone with diamond mountains, colored trees and multicolored buildings. While that's not necessarily bad, I do wish it had more of an actual city feel rather than just random elements. The models for the CG parts are really well done and they move really great. the characters seem a litte weird given they look normal but the world is a bit of a mish mash of things.
Story: it's a little bit different this time around storywise. Instead of the usual "Im-a-girl-whose-never-performed-before-but-now-Im-suddenly-an-idol!", it becomes "Im-a-girl-who-has-a-history-of-dance-and-now-Im-being-taking-over-for-an-idol-who-disappeared?!". It's definitely a bit of a shift from the usual formula. The training montages seem to be live action, which isn't bad but it definitely feels like it has less of an impact. What I do kinda feel weird about is that they give Mao a pre-existing idol persona. While I know it was already determined this would happen based on the promotional articles, it's definitely weird to see her getting an avatar that belongs to somebody else.
Conclusion: Aikatsu Planet is definitey a show that is getting its bearings still, especially since it's trying something completely new. While it hasn't gotten me super excited, I didn't really find any reason to dislike or straight up hate it. My reception to it is mostly lukewarm. I'll deffo give episode 2-3 a watch
to see if its worth keeping in my 2021 list.
