A list of puns related to "Library acquisitions"
Hey everyone! I just am curious about something.
I acquired a collection of books by author Lucy Maud Montgomery, & found out that the local university (University of Guelph) has the best collection of those books, & is a leading preserver of them or something along those lines. So I emailed them & they were surprised to see the good condition of the collection, & offered to check their holdings to see which ones they’d like to purchase from me. I’m just wondering how long that usually would take? As it’s been almost a week.
What is the acquisition process? Does a well funded university have a bigger amount to spend on book collections? & is there some sort of guide to how much they offer? Or is that solely up to the special collections librarian?
Thanks so much for your time!
Hi all! Posting here because I’d like to hear some perspective about when and how I should leave a library job from people in the field.
I’ve gotten into my first-choice MLIS program! I’m going to UBC! Super pleased and excited. The program begins September 1st, but I’m going to leave my job on June 15th to backpack a bit if safe (I am vaccinated) and then make my way to the Canadian border and Vancouver.
I am however worried about how to leave my co-workers with enough time and the information they need to take on my workload until they can hire someone else. I certainly don’t think I’m irreplaceable, but we are still in a hiring freeze, so they will certainly not replace me anytime soon. To add to that, last year, my unit of 6 1/2 people was cut to 3 1/2. One is my new-ish boss, who had the supervision of this unit dropped on her rather abruptly in addition to the job she normally does, and consequently has not really learned all the workings of my job because now she effectively has 2 jobs to do. Another person in the unit (the half-time individual) may soon retire, and didn’t take on a lot of the work done by our 3 former colleagues; that was largely picked up by me and my final coworker.
My boss does not know I have applied to schools; she began supervising me after I’d nearly finished apps and in any case the department culture is...frankly, toxic and abusive in many ways. I really didn’t want to draw attention to myself and my plans.
I feel that I should definitely give more than a two week’ notice, so I can help my coworkers out as much as possible. How much would be appropriate? And what can I do for them in the meantime (eg, off-boarding information, documentation of procedures and deviations in my current job?)

Hey everyone. I would appreciate any advice or guidance anyone might have. Especially if you have first hand experience.
I'm planning to launch a streaming station in the future. I'm in the planning stages and still getting everything figured out as far as what I need to get and do to be legit. But there's one thing in particular that I'm having trouble figuring out.
I know I need to pay a licensing fee to ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and SoundExchange. But I'd like to get an idea of about how much I'll have to pay monthly (or is it quarterly?) to those organizations. I'm planning to play licensed music around the clock on my station, and I understand how much you pay depends on how much music you play and how many listeners you have, among other factors. So how do I estimate approximately how much that will cost, particularly when I'm first starting out and likely have a small listenership? I'd like to have some idea of how much money I need to have each month to cover the costs of running the station before it's generating much revenue. Also, what's the deal with streamlicensing.com? Does signing up with them and paying them cover all 4 of those organizations mentioned above? Are they actually legit? I saw a thing that suggested they might not be. It was one thing, but that's enough for me to be suspicious.
Secondly, I have a list of approx. 900 songs that I want to have in the station's library. Some of them I obviously have in my own library, but what is the best/most cost efficient (yet legal) way of obtaining the rest of them? Is there a service I can send a list of songs to and they'll sell me broadcast quality MP3s with all the meta data and everything? Preferably unedited versions, because I won't be under the thumb of the FCC. I've searched and haven't found any such service. I'd rather not have to go on iTunes or something and buy each song individually.
Thanks in advance for any help y'all can give me.
I hate Spotify because the only way you can organize your collection is by creating more and more playlists. There's no central "collection" like there was with Rdio.
