FW de Klerk, the last State President of apartheid South Africa, quickly initiated wide spread liberalization efforts that unbanned political opposition, released political prisoners and began negotiations with the ANC to end apartheid. This culminated in a negotiated settlement that transformed South Africa from a white supremacist authoritarian dictatorship to a multi-party democratic republic. This came as a shock to the world and de Klerk's own party as de Klerk had previously been seen as an ultraconservative who would maintain the dictatorship and the apartheid system.
But what if de Klerk was an actual ultraconservative? What if he maintained the policies of his predecessors and continued the increasingly brutal dictatorship of the National Party? Would the Government be overthrown? Would there be a civil war? What would happen to the leadership and the future of the ANC? How would South Africa look like today?
Publicily at least, they seem quite cordial with each other.
