"The KαΉ›αΉ£αΉ‡a consciousness movement is not a sentimental religious movement; it is a movement for the reformation of all the anomalies of human society..

..If people take to it seriously, discharging this duty scientifically, as ordered by ŚrΔ« Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the world will see peace and prosperity instead of being confused and hopeless under useless governments. There are always rogues and thieves in human society, and as soon as a weak government is unable to execute its duties, these rogues and thieves come out to do their business. Thus the entire society becomes a hell unfit for gentlemen to live in. There is an immediate need for a good governmentβ€”a government by the people, with KαΉ›αΉ£αΉ‡a consciousness. Unless the masses of people become KαΉ›αΉ£αΉ‡a conscious, they cannot be good men. The KαΉ›αΉ£αΉ‡a consciousness movement that ŚrΔ« Caitanya Mahāprabhu started by chanting the Hare KαΉ›αΉ£αΉ‡a mahā-mantra still has its potency. Therefore people should understand it seriously and scientifically and spread it all over the world."

Can r/Kerala recommend any books on the various movements for social reform that's happened in Kerala?

I've been watching some of the speeches posted here and I realised that I don't really know much Kerala history (more specifically about the various movements for social reform towards equality, which I'd be more interested in). For example, I might vaguely know of Ayyankali and Sree Narayanana Guru(kore perukal kettittundu and vaguely kurachu sambhavangal ariyaam), but I would not know much details and I don't even remember whatever little I might have read/heard as a kid.

Would you recommend any books that I can read to become more knowledgeable about this? English or Malayalam is fine. (Ideally something that I can order online XD )

I get that it's a broad topic, but I would appreciate any leads that you throw at me :)

Thanks!

Added: Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Do keep them coming. I will order them one by one. Hopefully online kittum :D

CMV: The whole β€œCancel Student Debt” movement is nothing but a distraction from actual education reform

As much as I do realize that the education (college) system is broken, cancelling student debt is yet another short-term solution that does nothing to fix these problems and only serves as a way to keep people distracted from the aforementioned problems. Without fixing the student loan system, canceling student loan debt does nothing, sure you’ve gotten rid of some debt, but there will just be more and more high school grads taking out loans and we will be in the exact same boat that we are in today. As a result, it is my opinion that we should focus on true education and student loan reform before canceling student debt so as to address the roots of the problem

Goalpost Movement Alert! Leading BYU Professor Admits Book of Mormon Translation was Not Literal But "Creative and Cultural." Specifically cites Protestant Reformation during the time period as an influence.

Prof. Skousen from the Critical Text Project:

All of this quoting from the King James Bible is problematic, but only if we assume that the Book of Mormon translation literally represents what was on the plates. Yet the evidence in The Nature of the Original Language (parts 3 and 4 of volume 3 of the critical text) argues that the Book of Mormon translation is tied to Early Modern English, and that even the themes of the Book of Mormon are connected to the Protestant Reformation, dating from the same time period. What this means is that the Book of Mormon is a creative and cultural translation of what was on the plates, not a literal one. Based on the linguistic evidence, the translation must have involved serious intervention from the English-language translator, who was not Joseph Smith. Nonetheless, the text was revealed to Joseph Smith by means of his translation instrument, and he read it off word for word to his scribe. To our modern-day, skeptical minds, this is indeed β€œa marvelous work and a wonder”.

Link: https://byustudies.byu.edu/content/learn-more-about-parts-5-and-6-volume-3-critical-text-project-book-mormon

That last sentence just kills me: Yes, it's problematic that Joseph Smith used to claim to ride a dragon to the north pole and then kill polar bears with his bare hands because dragons don't exist, which, of course, confirms again even more how amazing and miraculous he was!

Did you know that Protestantism started in Ethiopia 70 years prior to the reformation movement of Roman catholicism led by Martin Luther c.1517 A.D.?

David D.Daniels, October 31, 2017, to the Christian Century. FYI: Slightly modified.

This year (i.e. 2017) marks the 500th year anniversary of the launching of the Protestant Reformation in Germany. Commemorations will be held from Memphis to Mombasa to Mumbai to Munich. Yet, most events and books on the Reformation explore it without any reference to African Christians.

This silence is profound, and I would like to break it by offering possible Ethiopian connections to Martin Luther and the Protestant movement. Luther launched the Protestant Reformation in 1517, but he had begun that year fascinated with Ethiopian Christianity.Β That will come as a surprise to many of today’s Christians, even scholars, who are accustomed to discussing Luther and the Protestant Reformation as solely European subjects. But Luther esteemed the Church of Ethiopia because he thought Ethiopia was the first nation in history to convert to Christianity.

Located in Africa -- beyond the orbit of the Roman Catholic Church -- this first Christian kingdom, according to Luther, served as an older, wiser, black sibling to the white Christian kingdoms of Europe. In a sense, the Church of Ethiopia was the "dream" for Luther, a true forerunner of Protestantism. As an ancient church with direct ties to the apostles, the Ethiopian Church conferred legitimacy on Luther’s emerging Protestant vision of a church outside the authority of the Roman Catholic papacy.

As a forerunner of the Protestant Reformation, the Church of Ethiopia embodied the gospel message more robustly and faithfully. Ethiopian Christians practiced elements of the faith absent in Roman Catholicism, elements Protestants would later adopt such as communion in both kind, vernacular Scriptures, and married clergy. Absent from Ethiopian Christianity were practices Protestants would dismiss: the primacy of the Roman pope, indulgences, purgatory, and marriage as a sacrament.

Luther's theological fascination with the Ethiopian Church was illuminated in 1534 in his face-to-face dialogue with an Ethiopian cleric, Michael the Deacon [ here ], where Luther tested out his theological portrait of the Ethiopian Church.

Recalling the dialogue with Michael the Deacon, Luther later stated: β€œWe have also learned from him, that the rite which we observe in the use of admini

Why was there never an Orthodox reformation and associated religious violence with such a movement?

We all know about the Great Schism that rendered Orthodox Christianity into its own offshoot, and how it was treated as a heresy and subject to Crusader violence in the later Crusades.

But why did Orthodoxy not have its own reformation movement? Was it a lack of significant issues related to excess and restricting access to common folk a la the Catholic religion? Were there not any issues with corruption and concentration of power? Google didn't have much to say on the topic.

This Movement is the greatest reformation movement in American History.

I want to say first and foremost, thank you to all who went to vote in the Nevada Caucus. Even as they're still tabulating everything, I've been wanting to make this comparison for a long, long time: How this movement is EXACTLY THE SAME as the one that happened in Hong Kong, but under different circumstances.

In Hong Kong, the people were faced with a puppet Chief Executive that defied the Basic Law, the laws of Hong Kong that were supposed to guarantee it as a safe haven for trade worldwide. What happened for 6 months before the month of December 2019 was constant oppression of the people; and when the people rose up, they did so peacefully in protests and voted for a more democratic system that could implement change. Even if they are still dealing with oppression, work is being done to bring Hong Kong back to its former glory by getting Beijing out of the equation before their time which is in 27 years is up.

We are practically fighting the same war that they fought: A war against the Establishment and its power over the people. Before this movement, I believed that the people still had power, but when the problems in 2019 arose, I finally understood that power had been taken away; when the General in Iraq was killed in a bombing by Trump, that was an illegal act of war that rekindled Iraq's hatred against the US. What needs to happen in our current world is that we need a leader that can speak the truth in a world of misinformation lies, and bring change for the better. The only way we can ensure this is through our own solidarity, love for all people regardless of race, and respecting one another as equals.

Why did Luther's reformation succeed and spread across Europe while previous movements such as the Lollards, Waldesnians and Hussites stayed persecuted minorities or at the very best localized in one country?

Inspiration for this question: playing eu4, reformation started in England and barely spread out of it, no country is protestant and yet still the reformation branches out in Provence (I'll imagine these are the Waldesnians). I was wondering why such a reformation which started in isolated island England would succeed while Lollardy did not.

My thoughts on how to better the movement for police/ CJ reform:

Disclaimer: I'm fairly conservative, but the reason I'd still call myself a moderate/centrist is because I recognize the necessity of liberalism to balance out perspectives like mine. I think 'left and right wing' is actually a great analogy, with centrism being the fuselage, and the wings adjusting the nation's direction of travel. Those stuck beneath the system's weight deserve a voice, and lord knows the Ted Cruzes of the world will never be that.

  1. The media needs to stop cherry picking only the police incidents that you can divide people over. Clear cut police murder happens, but those incidents don't seem to gain much media traction which I believe is because they aren't controversial, and people would unite around them. I believe most of the major cases we've seen (George Floyd, Jacob Blake, Michael Brown, etc.) have been at best made to look much more clear cut than reality, and often, are completely twisted in the news and the police acted as they should have.

  2. We need a movement/organization that doesn't exclusively focus on either justifying or condemning every police action as either 'officer safety protocol' or evil. We need one that will both condemn bad police actions, and also make an active effort to highlight great police, which there are many. (Lt. Brian Murphy, Officer Michael Terwilliger, and others should be household names). I think a movement like this would only unite conservatives and liberals. Adult humans are basically large children, and you don't correct behavioral problems if you only give praise, or only pay attention to them when disciplining them. I believe this principal applies on a societal scale as well.

  3. People need to recognize that under the umbrella of police misconduct, there is nuance. Police incompetence/ under training, excessive use of force, and true police brutality happen on a scale and we need to subcategorize these phenomenon and view the respective cops responsible accordingly.

  4. The fact that the criminal justice system isn't designed to reform people, and often makes them worse shouldn't fall on the cops' shoulders IMO. It's the system we have, and police need to respond to situations and operate within it. With that said, the CJ system is terrible. No doubt many of the people police deal with are just malevolent beyond repair, but many more simply need help and it would benefit everyone to give that to them. As a conservative leaning person I'd be happy for my tax dollars to go towards h

Did the Jacob Blake shooting need to be a good example of police brutality for people to demonstrate for the broader police reform movement?

Hiya! I dont post very often but I was listening to Destiny's convo with the BLM dude on the Youtube and I had a question for yall. So the Jacob Blake shooting seemed to be pretty justifiable based on the info released, but nonetheless people came out protesting in Kenosha against police violence. Whether you say it was because the people were misinformed or not all the info was released or whatever, why did the Jacob Blake shooting need to be a perfect example of police brutality? Why can't it just be a spark/catalyst for people to protest against a broader issue? Of course, it is absolutely preferable for protests to be catalyzed by unquestionable fuckups by the police (ie George Floyd), but when it comes to less than stellar examples (especially those that spark smaller local action), where do yall draw the line as to what should be acceptable examples for people to hold up/point to as examples of unjustified police violence? Should all the examples that are sparks for larger action have to reach a high standard of proof that violence was unjustified or can situations where the justification for violence is much greyer be allowed?

Thanks for reading and I hope yall have a good day/night/whatever time zone ur in! Have a happy holidays!

Is there a Verein/group to oppose and reform abusive BVG ticket controllers? Some movement to donate to?

Long story short: my kids (8 and 10 grades) were fined 60 Eur each after they boarded a tram with a broken ticket machine. (They had paper SchΓΌlerausweise from school, but no electronic ones, so they tried to buy tickets, and failed, because the machine was broken) The ticket controllers (an aggressive woman and two burly men) didn't believe them, pushed them, made them step out of the tram, mocked them for their appearance (my daughter has short hair and looks queer), and brought them to tears. Now the kids are afraid to take the tram (and also we owe money to BVG for this wonderful experience /s).

A question: this particular Strafe aside, is there any Verein, group, or political movement to oppose this rude behavior towards kids? It would be nice to go after these ticket controllers in particular, by rising a proper complaint against them, but more importantly, I'd love to support some protest against the system as a whole. Based on my googling, it's not an isolated incident, and kids (and adults) are regularly abused both on S-Bahn and Trams, but my German is not good enough to find any actual groups fighting this problem (I'm probably using wrong keywords). Do you by chance have any leads?

Honestly, what I want the most at this point is to donate money to the cause, to hurt BVG ticket control system as much as possible.

Thanks!

Why did these heresies fail and became footnotes in history but protestantism(both luteranism and reformed branches) rose to become so important?
