Veracrypt Partition vs File for security with journaling file system

I was reading through the documentation and notice a part about not using journaling file system like NTFS when using a Veracrypt File container. The reason is that the journal in the file system could compromise information about the encryption. They recommend that file container be placed on non-journaling file system like exFAT.

How difficult would it to use the file system journal to hack a Veracrypt container?

Windows NTFS File System Journaling - Forensics

Good morning,

I’ve just released a new episode in the Introduction to Windows Forensics series entitled β€œNTFS Journal Forensics.” As you might have guessed by the title, this episode covers file system journaling in NTFS. From a forensics perspective, there's a large amount of information that can be gleaned from this data, including one of the only ways we can prove if and when something was deleted from an NTFS volume. We'll take a look at the $MFT and the two different journals maintained by this file system ($UsnJrnl and $LogFile), and highlight the differences between them. Then, we'll learn how to use Triforce ANJP to parse these important artifacts.

OpenBSD and Journaling file systems

Hi

I'm using linux and I like to try OpenBSD for serval reasons.

I read some article that OpenBSD doesn't support any journaling file systems, but that article was from 2006.

On Wikipedia I read that there is Softupdates, keeping meta data in memory to ensure that the file system is consistent.

So whats the current state of the art to achieve a journaling file system like ext4 does, or is it possible to run OpenBSD with ext4?

Thank you!

What's that system of journaling called?

A few months ago I stumbled upon an article (I think it was on Medium) that talked about a journaling system that was basically a mix of bullet journaling and keeping a diary. The idea was that you didn't have to leave your journaling at just making lists β€” it could be much more if you wrote in it as you went along.

A brief example of the system would be:

>Sunday, November 7
>
>Today's main goals set last night:
o Prepare meeting notes for tonight's meeting
o Find a spot to organise my room
o Coffee with Beth @ noon
>
>Woke up early at 6:30 and got to see the sunrise. I like being up before everybody else because it motivates me to get some work done.
>
> o Switch up my morning routine for next week so I can squeeze it some sunrise watching during breakfast
>
>I'm about to start studying now. I'm going to write down my schedule so I have to keep myself accountable. That helps me see how realistic I am with the time I assign each task.
>
> 8:30 project revision and organising the next stage
>
> 9:30 finish up drawings 2 hours definitely was not enough, I need more time because I'm slow when I'm not feeling the inspiration. I should just prioritise getting it done over making it perfect. I'll work on it some more before dinner.
>
> 11:30 clean my room It feels so good to walk into a clean room at night!
>
> 12:00 coffee with Beth! Seeing friends is definitely the best part of my weekends

Anyway... that was sort of the idea. Does anyone know how this system might be called? Or anything related to this idea of mixing bullet journaling with logging in diary entries? Has anyone seen an article about this? I can't seem to find it and I'd love to read it again.

Thanks for the help, reddit!

DEATHLOOP should have used the Outer Wilds' journaling system (and more)

I'm a huge fan of Arkane's work on their Dishonored franchise and Prey, so I was really excited when they announced DEATHLOOP, 2 or 3 years ago. It was sold as an FPS immersive simulation experience in which you play a man stuck in a time loop who needs to find a way to kill the 8 'Visionaries' controlling the loop in order to break it. When the announcement got out, I had never played Outer Wilds so I was expecting a brand new experience, with the legendary level design and world building that comes with Arkane's work.

Then, during this summer, I played Outer Wilds for the first time and it was the best experience I ever had with a video game. I'm not going to list all the things the game did incredibly well (as I assume there are jillions of better existing posts that are already doing that on this sub), but let's just agree on the fact that Mobius Digital mastered the mechanics of the Timeloop immersive sim genre.

At the core of Outer Wilds' user experience is the journaling system and especially the rumour graph system. Timeloop immersive sims rely heavily on gathering information during each loop while giving to players the liberty to explore wherever (and whenever) they want. Therefore, information is not learned in a linear predictable way depending on the player's path. AFAIK, most games, when displaying information to the player, use a traditional list of logs sorted in an order of discovery (What you find last is displayed first). Regarding to OW's gameplay, this system could be problematic: if players come back to the place they've been 10 loops ago, they must scroll down 20 pages of unrelated logs to find the info they already gathered about this place. This could be tedious and links between pieces of information are lost in the process.

Fortunately, Mobius Digital designed the Rumour Graph. It was the perfect solution to this problem. The graph displayed knowledge about the universe and its mysteries with the following rules:

  • Each place, event or character of the OW universe forms a node of the graph.
  • Any knowledge about an entity is added to its node and can be read by simply clicking on the node in graph mode.
  • Any knowledge that links two entities together draws a line between the two corresponding nodes in graph mode.
  • If an undiscovered entity is linked to a discovered one, the undiscovered node appear on the graph with a big question mark, encouraging you to find this entity with the information you already have.
  • If there

Tip: taking rapid throwaway notes by hand before rewriting them into your permanent journaling or note-taking system may yield better results than directly capturing raw notes.

Often I witness others taking meeting notes (as one example of many) directly into their journal or favorite note-taking app. I used to do this, too, but I’ve found a way that works better for me.

It works by mentally separating what is a β€œcapture” note vs. other kinds of notes in my system, such as logs. Often I take capture notes on a tear-off pad or in a different app in order to remind myself that these scratch notes are meant to be crumpled up and thrown away once they’re transferred into my permanent system.

Rewriting rather than rote-copying initially seems inefficient but it offers several advantages: first, it forces me to clarify language and ideas and only keep important parts of the notes, removing unnecessary cruft and clutter that might otherwise have gotten sucked into my system. Second, doing so improves my cognitive understanding and recall later of whatever was the content of the note. Third, it’s immensely satisfying to throw away or scratch out those transient notes, because it feels like I’ve achieved closure on something.

I’ve been surprised to find that rewriting is an essential part of my note-taking system, even such that I apply it to more than just raw capture. How about you?

(For more tips and learnings from my note-taking adventures, consider checking out my write-up: β€œA Comprehensive Approach to Personal Note-Taking” linked in the comments.)

Bullet Journaling Systems / Rappid Logging / Category Icons and Labels

Dear bujo community.

When I read the book by Ryder Carroll and the basic functionality of the Bullet Journal method, it really shifted my perspective on what I do and why I do it and how I keep track of tasks and also (life) memories and ideas.

Now that I am working with the BuJo-Method for some time, I am looking for enhanced systems, which may help to even be more productive in "organizing my mind".

In particulay I am looking for systems, which also deliver an explaination of how they work, which icons are used in them and how information bits and similar may be linked within these system(s).

A few days ago, I also stumbled upon a post in this community, which leads to an external website, which looked quite interesting at first glance (there was a lot of text and explanations). But unfortunately I have lost the link and couldn't save the post, since I only created a reddit account a few hours ago. I already used the search function, but I could not find the post. :(

However, I am now looking for the particular post or in substitute some sources which explain Bullet Journaling systems.

Does anybody know about such? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks & best regards.

Grayshift is constantly evolving their proprietary Graykey product which unlocks phones for law enforcement, and allows them to completely extract the file system from your phone. Here are some cool new features of their product you might find interesting.

The first interesting feature you might find interesting about is a feature Grayshift refers to as Instant Unlock. This feature allows allows law enforcement to instantly unlock your smartphone, regardless of if bruteforce is supported for that particular phone. Here are some links which mention this feature.

  1. https://www.grayshift.com/glossary/

  2. https://ibb.co/0Y2XP91 This comes from a marketing document talking about various licensing options for Graykey.

  3. https://ibb.co/QfzM2F0 This is a document talking about the various phones and operating systems Graykey supports. This document was uploaded when Grayshift filed their product to be trademarked. It was filed July of 2020, and mentions this Instant Unlock feature. It also shows that at the time that document was made, Graykey supported all iPhones, and operating systems for it.

Another thing Grayshift has done in the past year is introduce Android support for their product. They are also constantly adding more phones the product can unlock, and extract data from. Here are some articles talking about this.

  1. https://www.grayshift.com/newsroom/grayshift-introduces-android-support-on-graykey-for-mobile-device-forensics-companyextends-ios-forensic-leadership-to-android-devices/

  2. https://www.grayshift.com/groundbreaking-insights-into-graykey/

  3. https://www.forensicfocus.com/interviews/grayshift-co-founders-david-miles-chief-executive-officer-braden-thomas-chief-product-officer/ This link is a interview with Grayshift creators, talking about their product. It also mentions how their innovative product is constantly updated, and often supports same day support for the latest operating systems.

The last thing I will share with you is a document Grayshift published recently, which talks about 10 reasons you need Graykey. To get access to this document, I put in a fake email, which granted me access to the document.

Does Satan work at Apple and is he responsible of the file transfer system?

This is just a rant for my own sanity. I'm more in need of emotional rather than tech support right now.

Why the hell is it so freaking difficult to transfer pictures and videos from your iPhone to your PC? It should be simple: you plug your phone in using the USB cable, your computer recognizes it as a hard drive and you can copy-paste the media files you want to save on your computer in one click. Easy peasy right?

Then why the f-ck do I need to use that awful Photos app on Windows and why is there an error popping up every single time? Why do I have to use iCloud, OneDrive or Dropbox to somehow make it easier? My computer and iPhone are 5 centimeters apart, my files shouldn't have to travel half the planet to get in here. Aren't guys at Apple aware that data centers and cloud storage gobble up so much electricity? Why are they doing this? Why? Why!? WHY!?

A Simple Bullet journaling System To Keep Track Of Everything

Tl;dr at the end

I'm going to share a simple bullet journaling framework that takes 10 minutes to set up and requires 0 art skills. Which is great because I too, have none.

I'm going to share a simple bullet journaling framework that takes 10 minutes to set up and requires 0 art skills. Which is great because I too have none.

The Month

I do this first. I divide list out different areas of my life (job , studying , guitar , fun etc) and list out 2-3 goals for each of them. I never set more than 3 goals for one aspect of my life because that signals to things to me:

  1. Either I'm taking on too much
  2. Or The goals I've set are not important enough

The number 3 is arbitrary but its one that's worked for me.

These goals usually take one page, on the next page I have a monthly review.

My review process is absurdly simple, I ask myself these questions:

  1. What went well this month?
    1. (I think this is important because its easier to trash yourself but not so easy to praise yourself)
  2. What could be improved slightly for the next month?
    1. (The language is important here, since its not a negative question like what sucked this month I find the answer for the 2 tend to have different tones and the answer for the latter tends to be unhelpful)

Pro tip: Having the goals and the review on adjacent pages makes it easy to review your progress

The Week

Each Sunday (My day of choice) I follow this same process for each week, here's what it looks like:

  1. Look and monthly goals and see which sub goal and you reasonably do in this week
    1. Example: If your goal for the month is to finish the syllabus for the GRE for instance, then a weekly goal could be 'X topics of Math and Y topics of Verbal'
  2. I like to set atleast one goal per area of my life in largely the same format as the month
    1. This makes the look of the journal uniform and saves time in thinking about which goal to set
    2. If you set 3 goals each for your career, fitness and hobbies then I would set atleast 1 each for those 3
  3. Again, I like to have the review page next to the goals page, for convenience

The Day

I like to write this each night before going to bed. (But more often than not, i forget so I end up writing it the next morning)

This is similar to a to-do list. Write down 2-4 tasks that line up with your weekly goals and you're good to go.

I like to write 1 line about how the day went, as a brief daily review but this again is optional.
