I figured the most common question I would be asked would be "why haven't you made a new prank call in ages?" and I figured I would get that one out of the way: I was royally screwed by the record industry and literally had to sue to get tiny dribs and drabs of what I was actually owed. I basically stopped wanted to work for free, so there you go. Classic story of the record biz.

There is no best way to DM, but there are very good ways to DM. As someone who has watched a lot of Critical Role, Dimension 20, and Oxventure, I’ve pulled a lot of inspiration from these three excellent DMs and I want to share what they’ve taught me.

Run a game you believe in
I will never, ever have a world so complete as Matt Mercer. He’s an old-school, LotR fantasy nut and that level of world building is far beyond my attention span.

However, what I do see that I can take away is the pursuit of a world, a story, a game that I believe in. I would bet money that Exandria is Matt’s happy place. And seeing how many times I’ve burned out and seeing that Matt keeps coming back to this one world week after week for years on end, I have learned that I need to find my happy campaign-setting.

I accept that such a world will be much messier than anything Matt has and that’s okay. What’s important is that I enjoy watching adventures unfold in that place, whether they go the way I think they will or not.

Enough familiarity to bounce off of
Brennan Lee Mulligan’s worlds are all essentially fanfiction that has gone so far off the rails you have to squint to see the original property. There are just enough things that harken back to that original thing that his players can trope their way into characters that are deeply part of the world without needing ten sessions of play to get there.

If you’ve seen Escape from the Bloodkeep, that moment when Amy Vorpahl decides she wants the power to give the blessing herself...it’s possibly my favorite thing I’ve ever seen a D&D player do. (Matt Mercer himself gives her a pat on the back for it!) When she says it, it sounds like the most impossible thing; not just to do, but to think of. And it came from Amy feeling like she knew how this world worked.

Was it supposed to work that way? No, not even a little. BLM gapes at her like Amy, not Efink, has started casting spells. It’s incredible and I want that to happen in my game; so to hell with coming up with the most original thing I can think of. My players need a world they can relate to and feel like they can intuit the secrets it hides, without me having to actually come up with those secrets.

Keep moving, fix it later
The Oxventure is possibly the ultimate example of time budgeting D&D. Those things are frequently done live at game cons. They cannot go long. It’s not an option in that venue.

Pacing is a huge thing for the player experience. J

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
